Both fighters were in rebound mode, looking to erase the memory of their last performance. In Kampmann's case, he hasn't won in a year and another loss tonight would give him his dreaded third strike.
Kampmann didn't exactly hit a home run but at the very least he went for a ground rule double by mostly having his way with Story throughout the three-round contest. It wasn't the war fight fans were promised but a win is a win is a win.
"The Hitman" is now out of his slump, while Story continues his.
Story came out looking to bang but ate multiple shots in the process, all of which appeared to stagger him albeit briefly. He quickly recovered, though, and managed to land a couple big shots to impose his will early.
It was back-and-forth for the rest of the round.
Power shots were the name of the game in round two. Bad intentions and all that. Story, despite his wrestling credentials, opted to avoid takedown attempts in favor of body shots that seemed to take little toll.
With two minutes in the round, it was Kampmann who decided to utilize a trip to get the fight to the floor. Once he did, he immediately worked an arm triangle choke, ultimately to no avail. Story held on for dear life and made it to the final frame.
After being told by his corner he was down in the fight, Story came out guns blazing in the third. "The Hitman" just used his head, though, and worked the clinch game.
It may not have been pretty -- it may have even been boring -- but when you're in an 0-2 hole, it's hard to fault a guy for doing whatever it takes to get back on the right track.
