UFC 137 gate totals $3,900,650 with 8,179 tickets sold for 'Penn vs Diaz' on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas
UFC 137 recorded a live gate of $3,900,650 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Oct. 29, 2011, according to official figures from the Nevada State Athletic Commission released earlier today.
The final attendance of 10,313 was a result of 8,179 tickets sold and 2,134 complimentary tickets while 409 tickets remained unsold.
In addition, the "Sin City" hotel also raked in $26,150 for the 523 patrons willing to pay for the closed-circuit viewing party, leaving 2,081 seats empty and 200 moochers there for free.
"Penn vs. Diaz" featured former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz staking his claim to a Super Bowl title shot against Georges St. Pierre by pounding on B.J. Penn for 15-minutes strong.
But that's not all.
Cheick Kongo maintained his status as the gatekeeper of the heavyweight division by outperforming Matt Mitrione in the co-main event of the evening.
Mirko Filipovic went out on a low note, retiring from active competition after getting clobbered by Roy Nelson while Scott Jorgensen stymied the return of Jeff Curran.
But don't take my word for it.

8 thousand sold…2 thousand given away..
1 out of every 4 people in the crowd got in for free…what’s the point in spending money to go to these events when every 3rd person sitting in your row is sitting there for free while you dished out 300 bucks…I fucking hate this shit bout UFC….
And this one isn’t even that bad, normally it’s like 1/3 of the tickets are given away…
All these people paying hundreds of dollars to go, and the person sitting next to them got in for free……bunch of fucking freeloaders…that’s why tickets are so fucking high, because YOU have to pay for the 25-30% of the people around you who didn’t pay shit….
sigs are gay
Who is getting these free tix?
How? And what’s the thinking behind that?

Yeah it would be 1 out of 5 in for free
Regardless it’s a lot. So why so many!?

My best guess would be family and friends of the fighters, fighters not on the card and their people, celebrities, media, a few regular free tickets for contests or whatever…

Best assumption its they are comped Vegas seats by the Hotels who give them to their whales
Others are comped to family and friends.
I just want to know who were the lucky 200 moochers.
I've got something to say; it better to burn out than to fade away!!!
Is it really funny Mayhem, please tell me its funny.

I don't understand.
People were saying Diaz vs Penn was the big attraction, the real fight fans wanted to see, two great warriors who wouldn’t let it go to a decision.
I doubt they’ll have problem selling out the place for Diaz vs GSP.
Cesar is a Gracie for crying out loud. They are supposed to be respectful. I see the American whore way of Life has gotten to this Brazilian. What happened to honor and respect! Wait I know… Money happened.

are u really trying to say Diaz vs GSP would have been a more entertaining fight?
GSP hasnt been in a fight that good ever.
Pro Sig record
4-5
Sig bet with TheDragon on Rua/Hendo and Fedor/Monson. HENDO/FEDOR
Fedor is the best heavyweight MMA fighter of all time.
The one’s that were saying that(myself included) are hardcore fans which to this day represent a small portion of the audience.
GSP for all the complains he gets from the hardcore fan base is a still a huge draw with the casuals.
Fair enough.

What this article doesn't say is that
This event had the 3rd largest live gate in UFC-Mandalay Bay event history. Not too bad…
I wanna see the PPV sales numbers, early reports are estimating low sales, ~280k-300k.

Im surprised nobody gives Penn any credit for this fight
I keep hearing about how BJ looked after the fight, but Diaz looked pretty horrid too…
Kinda funny that the two fighters that Diaz couldnt finish in his “reign of terror” are actual LW fighters…
