Pic of the Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 3 scorecards from UFC 136 last night (Oct. 8) in Houston. Judges Cecil Peoples and Nelson Hamilton scored the first round a 10-9 while Doug Crosby scored it 10-8. Had the fight gone to decision it very well may have ended in controversy once again, but Edgar made sure to avoid as much by knocking Maynard out in the fourth round. What.... the... **ck...
do you have to do to get a 10-8 round in the eyes of some of these judges? I suppose I should not be surprised that Cecil Peoples was one of the two scoring the first round a 10-9.
10 point must system is fail… especially when anything below 10-8 is impossible and a 10-8 is reserved for those rounds where one fighter beats the other into a “living death” (Shamrock’s words, not mine)
I heard about this
Good job Doug Crosby, you’re the only one who scored the fight right. It says a lot when a guy who scored Edgar-Penn 50-45 is the only one who knows what a 10-8 round is in a fight. Shame on Cecil (as usual) and Doc Hamilton (used to think he was decent).

i didnt think that was a 10-8
did you think the first round in their last fight was a 10-7? because if you did, then i can at least come to grips with your thinking…but if you thought the first round in their last fight was a 10-8, then last night was a 10-9…gray clearly won, but he beat up frankie much worse in the last fight, and frankie also put up much less of a fight in the last one as well…frankie landed some solid strikes in the first last night, and by gray being less aggressive and much more tactical in the first last night, he ensured himself not getting a 10-8

so you're saying
that the first round by Maynard was just as good as round two by Edgar? That’s what you’re defending right now, just letting you know.
And yes, I think the first round of Edgar-Maynard from UFC 125 could have been ruled a 10-7

no, thats not what im defending at all
except, in a 10 point must system, thats what it means…grays 1st round was obviously better than frankies 2nd, but a 10 point must doesnt take that into account

the first round should've been a 10-7.
they need to implement the knockdown rule and the only way to reverse the score should be if the other fighter scores one of his own or comes close to a submission finish.

I personally scored the first round 10-9. I wouldn’t have an issue with it being a 10-8 though. In retrospect, it probably did deserve a 10-8…
so, you changed your mind while you were writing your post?

I had it 10 - 8 in the 1st round but...
I dont have any issue with someone scoring it a 10-9 round. This isnt boxing with 12 rounds, in a 5 or 3 round fight a 10-8 score in 1 round can decided the fight. Had this been a 3 round fight the fighter who gets the 8 in the first round cant win the fight without another 10-8 round in in his favor. The best he could hope for would be a draw. There for he gets no credit for surviving that 1st round beating.

tough.
if it’s a 3-rounder, and you lose the first 10-8, then its on you to finish the fight or hope for a draw.
but how often do all 3 judges score a round 10-8, hardly ever.
The first round was clearly a 10-8 round. Compare that round to the other rounds – which were all 10-9. You can’t say giving the first round to Gray and the 2nd to Frankie made it even/. The first clearly mattered more.

this isnt pride TW
youre right, the first and second rounds werent even, and its not fair that after the second the fight would be even, but in a 10 point must, thats how it goes

not sure what you mean.
what does this have to do with Pride? And that’s not how it goes. If there’s a dominant performance, the judges should award 10-8 for dominant rounds. Like the 1st round of Sonnen-Stann was 10-8 IMO. It’s only fair.
A guy can dominate you, then u squeek by the 2nd round by landing an extra jab or gettin a last second takedown. It’s not even.

i mean pride judged the whole fight

in pride that would fly, but this is the UFC, and if you scored the first round a 10-9 (which it seems divided about 50/50), then going by the 10 point must system it IS even

yeah, but im sayin when fights SHOULD be scored 10-8, judges are still reluctant.
they dont wanna put a fighter 2 points in the hole. but guess what, you didn’t put him 2 points in the hole…he did.

There should be no 10-8 rounds in MMA
In boxing you knock someone down they stop the fight and let the fighter clear his head…good job 10-8 round. In MMA there is no stoppage, its the fighters responsibility to end the fight. My problem with it is that there is no credit being given to the fighter who weathers the storm and comes back. The credit is being given to the fighter who lands a big shot but cant end the fight. 10-8 rounds are a scoring technique adopted from boxing that doesnt have a place in MMA. Do the 10-8 rounds apply to submission fighters? Think about how many time a fighter has near been submitted but escaped. Should the fighter who couldn’t finish the submission be awarded a 10-8 round?

Anyone who thinks it was not a 10-8 round(or 10-7) is beyond fucking stupid and should be shot because they are nothing more then a waste of human resources.
Seriously not even joking.
