The mullet, the beard and the big
Roy Nelson is set to face Pride legend Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 137(Oct. 29) live from LasVegas, NV. The entire card is drastically filled with exciting fighters and sluggers like main event counterparts Nick Diaz and BJ Penn.
It's safe to say that neither Nick Diaz or BJ Penn will be cut if either don't win. That could go for a majority of fighters set to face one another Saturday night.
That cannot be guaranteed for Roy Nelson or even Mirko Cro Cop
Join me after the jump to detail the rise and falling of Roy Nelsona nd how a knockout of a dwindled legende come this Saturday could keep him around for seconds.
Prior to joining the biggest fight promotion Roy Nelson was a veteran of the regional scene and his biggest Ascension being the International Fight League (IFL). In the IFL he became the first and only heavyweight champion for the promotion. He defended the belt against Fabiano Scherner and future Ultimate Fighter season 2 finalist Brad Imes.
In his next two bouts following the collapse of the IFLwere against his steepest challenges. Some would argue bad officiating from early stand ups led to his demise. He would face former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at EliteXC: 'Heat' where he would get knocked out. He then would fight for SRP: March Badness where he would lose a decision to UFC veteran Jeff Monson.
Now losing to the likes Monson and Arlovski isn't bad when you jump in talent. The losses didn't seem to affect Nelson all that badly as he was accepted to join the cast of 'The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights". He would be cast alongside another big name from EliteXC, Kimbo Slice.
I remember watching the show and begging that Roy Nelson, a ;fat looking guy who would be seen at your local tavern and not the gym; knockout Slice. Now Slice was recently exposed by Seth Petruzelli at EliteXC: Heat but this would be seen by the UFC fans.
In what would be one of the biggest shows ever for mixed martial arts Kimbo Slice versus Roy Nelson on June 10th, 2009.
It was pathetic.
It showed that Nelson not only wanted to beat Slice but he wanted to embarrass Slice. The fans had emphatic groan as Nelson placed his belly and Slice into a crucifix position. He didn't 'gary goodridge' him with elbows but laid on some of the worst ground and pound ever. He might aswell had pink bellied him while at it for safe measure. The fight couldn't end any sooner and you could see Herb Dean didn't want to stop a fighter for the mere fact he was unable to move but not due to absorbing damage.
In Nelson's head he must have thought he was being Dana White's assasin by eliminating the side show known as Kimbo. In turn the fight pissed off White who knew this was going to be a huge television event. The fans turned on Nelson and the affection for Kimbo camewith the disdain for Nelson.
Much to White's chagrin, Nelson would go on to become the Ultimate Fighter season ten winner after knocking out Brendan Schaub in the finale.
Nelson would start his true UFC flight by taking on the skyscrapper Stefan Struveat UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Gomi. He would make little work of the younger Struve after landing a nasty overhand right thats ent the skyscrapper into implosion.
Nelson then made a huge leap in the thin division known as heavyweight as he took on Brazilian bomber Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117 after Cheick Kongo withdrew. For three long rounds we saw Nelson eat fist and fury as the Brazilian Dos Santos laid claim to his ladder climb to the top.
1-1 through two fights and his problems got worse after former professional boxer Roy Jones Jr. who runs Squared Ring Promotions. Dana White said the issue made Nelson unable to fight for the UFC at that time and thus cancelled a planned bout for UFC 15 against former number one contender Shane Carwin.
At UFC 130 two former ADCC grapplers Frank Mir and Roy Nelson were set to face. They claimed to be friends but with the allure of gold dangling ahead of them they knew they had to fight. At Grapplers Quest 2003 Nelson would beat Mir on points to claim the superfight championship. Mir would exact the revenge by tossing and pummeling Nelson in his domain, MMA.
Now Nelson must face dangerous Mirko Cro Cop who never found his groove in the cage. Nelson is desperate for a win as he clearly is not a favorite of Dana White's.Cro Cop is on his last fight of his current contract and has enlisted the help of Pat Barry to train. Now is Cro Cop using Barry to get a height and reach knowledge?. Nelson hasn't fared too well with pures trikers as seen with Dos Santos and Arlovski. He is going to have to drag Cro Cop from his vertical base and smash a win out. His grappling supersedes Mirko's and that's where he has to take this fight.
Now if Cro Cop left leg kicks Nelson's head off then what is next? Is it closing time for the 'Big Country'? discuss in the comments section below.
