Don't mess with the man, Volk-mann.

According to his training partner Nick Thompson (via MMAWeekly.com), the Secret Service paid Jacob Volkmann a visit at both his youth wrestling camp and his home to discuss the recent interview "Christmas" had with Ariel Helwani in which he said he wanted to fight President Barack Obama because he disagreed with his policies.

I’d just like to say that I predicted Volkman would get a secret service visit in the original thread regarding his comments. You just can’t go around saying stuff like this about the POTUS.

Capable?

They can erase him. Didn’t you see the movie Eraser.

There was a local story here in Oakland, CA where a local rapper (Paris) put out an album during the Bush years that had a picture of him hiding in the bushes with a pistol as Bush walked towards him.

He was an angry, pipe hitting gangsta rapper that talked a lot of tough shit in his music.

After that album came out, the SS paid him a visit. The next day he was apologizing, and pulled hte album cover. He later drifted off into obscurity.

I wonder what the SS said to him to make him change his tune?

Since 7/08: Fedor has fought 4, agreed to fight 5 times, Brock has fought 5, Cain has fought 6, Big Nog only 3, Mir has fought 5, Carwin has fought 4, Werdum has fought 4, JDS has fought in 6, Silva has fought in 6, and oddly, Overeem has been the HW workhorse fighting 7 MMA fights in that span (plus several k1). sit in a waiting room for hours next to people who have to see the doc everytime they catch a cold. Then the doc tries to get you out as quick as possible so they can get to the next guy. by mythbuster on Jan 5, 2011 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

Ok sou don't want to be an instigator but saw the interview

And he made ZERO good points. All he said was that Obama is an idiot and that insurance companies can decline payment to Chiropractors.

Clearly he’s looking at things through his own lense and not the overall outlook. The plan does not say that insurance companies can choose not to pay, it says that it will try to control the costs charged by the monopoly of the insurance companies.

Now, even this concept is something I don’t agree with. Canadians have their HC taken care of for free. Chiropractors used to be part of the coverage in certain provinces until it was discovered that most Chiros were overcharging ridiculous amounts to the government healthcare agency.

So in 2005, in Ontario, they were cut off for abusing the system. They are still covered by most providers, but the days of robbing taxpayers were over. I think Volkmann is just unhappy he won’t get to charge whatever he wants.

Is public healthcare perfect? No, but I wouldn’t give it away for anything.

This is why common sense is slipping away . .

Common sense would be to use logic in identifying REAL threats and taking care of them, NOT big brothering normal people with an independent opinion. This guy is clearly no threat to the President but he’s being made an example of by the SS. Look what’s happening at our airports due to the political correctness of the NSA/TSA and their inability to discern between a credible threat (people of suspicion) and a soccer mom from Iowa. Incredible.

Theres the top ten. I love how people say that Fedor never fights...he is right on average with the rest to the top 10 in the HW division. Fanboy perception is wrong again...shocking.

Great gif usage. haha. I know what you mean, and you’re right. But it’s these stupid laws and regulations (like HAVING to investigate something that will lead to nothing) that is keeping our government costs high and efficiency low. . .And don’t even get me started on how the beaurocratic rules of engagement are affecting this war…

i understand what you're saying

but who decides what is serious enough to investigate and what is not? i’m not saying he should have or should not have been visited but it is one of those ‘think before you speak’ type moments. people have been arrested and shot for smaller shit.

We are losing our freedom of speech

This is not a threat… it was an opinion he stated. Hes allowed to say he wants to fight anyone… he didn’t say that he was going to punch him, or assault him. It’s like if he said he wanted to fight say…. Fedor… then that means he wants to get in the cage with Fedor. So basically all he said legally was that he wanted to cage fight Obama lol. Which is perfectly OK. He didn’t say he wanted to kill him, shoot him, or anything of this nature. If the SS decided to visit everyone who wanted to punch Obama in a cage… or out of.. they wouldn’t have enough people to protect shit. Fuck Obama… we as citizens should stand up against bullshit like this.

by Sam Maggard on Jan 5, 2011 6:00 PM EST reply actions

Sigh...

First, how does this incident show that we are “we” losing our “freedom of speech”?

Second, you think it’s not okay to say you want to kill or shoot the President, but it’s okay to say that you want to beat him up?

Get a grip dude. It’s amazing how much crap Obama takes. Republican congressman just called him the most corrupt president ever. Palin talks smack on his wife without provocation on her show. All with very little repercussions. Dixie Chicks say they’re embarrassed of Dubya and they become instant pariahs. Apparently all that patriotic and loyal talk about how the highest office in the country deserves respect goes out the window when it’s not a Republican sitting in the chair.

by Pantherhare on Jan 5, 2011 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

Legally...

He’s allowed to say that. He asked him who would you like to fight next… he answered Obama like he would anyone else. Does that mean his next opponent should file charges for threatening him? NO. He’s allowed to say he would like to slap some sense into anyone. Obama is the worst president we’ve had in 30 years…. or so. Nixon would be better. We need another JFK… or just elect Ron Paul and we wouldnt have all these problems.

by Sam Maggard on Jan 5, 2011 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

oh really?
Threatening the President of the United States is a class D felony under United States Code Title 18, Section 871. It consists of knowingly and willfully mailing or otherwise making “any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States”. The United States Secret Service investigates suspected violations of this law and monitors those who have a history of threatening the President. Because the offense consists of pure speech, the courts have issued rulings attempting to balance the government’s interest in protecting the President with free speech rights under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

Everyone seems to be ignoring this is not just Mr. Average Joe Citizen - this is a trained MMA Professional Fighter (even if he isn't the shit)

Everybody who trains in the martial arts should be aware of court rulings and certain laws that might affect their actions. There are not many simple, clear-cut rights as you may think. Depending on the state or country that you reside, using your martial arts skills may lead to an arrest, or a costly and complicated lawsuit. There are legal consequences in threatening others with your skills as well as in defending yourself. Remember this; in a court of law, it is assumed that you are aware of the legal limits of your actions. There’s a common legal saying, “Ignorance of the Law is No Defense.”

As a martial artist, if you ever use your skills to “call someone out”, or even merely threaten someone, however lightly (this can be considered assault, without battery in some US states) or if you ever have to defend yourself using physical force, and in doing so it lands you in police custody, you should immediately seek the aid of an attorney. When a martial artist, especially a Black Belt is accused of the threat of assault, or the use of excessive force in self-defense, the standard is usually higher than that of a novice practitioner, a non- martial artist, and a reasonable or prudent person. Many courts believe that it is only fair that one with unique skills is held to a unique standard.

Many martial artists go through years of extensive training, some make it into the black belt ranks, but few spend the time learning the assault laws that could ultimately affect them, or for that matter, the type of behavior they should exhibit in the public eye or the type of force that they are allowed by law to use on an attacker.

Furthermore, look at the definition of the terms the Secret Service is legally obligated to review in these instances:
AN ASSAULT IS: The intentional creation of apprehension of immediate harm to another. It is not a threat of some future incident, but a threat of immediate harm. Any non-lethal violence that does not involve substantial risk of death will be an assault. You don’t have to actually touch someone, only make them think that was your intention. The degree of assault varies upon instrumentality, numbers, or difference in ability to inflict harm to someone else. For instance, shot at with a gun, the swing of a bat, or some other attempted serious act to harm.

By that definition the president was NOT threatened with assault, but with perceived threats, even future threats to the president are not treated lightly and all threats and perceived threats, imminent or future, require investigation by the secret service, especially when made by someone who theoretically could use his skill-set as a deadly or lethal weapon.

What is even more interesting is this:

TERRORIST THREATS: Any person who willfully threatens to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury to another person, with the specific intent that the statement made verbally, in writing, or by means of an electronic communication device, is to be taken as a threat, even if there is no intent of actually carrying it out, which, on its face and under the circumstances in which it is made, is so unequivocal, unconditional, immediate, and specific as to convey to the person threatened a gravity of purpose and an immediate prospect of execution of the threat, and thereby causes that person reasonably to be in sustained fear for his or her own safety or for his or her immediate family’s safety, shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail not to exceed one year, or by imprisonment n the state prison. For the purpose of this section, "immediate family" means any spouse, whether by marriage or not, parent, child, any person related by consanguinity or affinity within the second degree, or any other person who regularly resides in the household, or who, within the prior six months, regularly resided in the household. "Electronic communication device" includes, but is not limited to, telephones, cellular telephones, computers, video recorders, fax machines, cameras, broadcasts (whether radio or televsion or internet) or texts or pagers. Terms as defined in subsection 12 of Section 2510 of Title 18 of the United States Code.

With all this in mind, although, we the “common folk” use our common sense to say that it was no big deal, the Secret Service would be remiss if they did not adhere to the codes and laws we have in place to insure the protection of the President. If you don’t like the law, lobby to change it or shut up.

Just look at all the fighters/wrestlers with legal issues and medical issues, like Chris Benoit the wrestler…they have to treat every individual as possibly an unstable threat, no matter how unlikely it may be.

I know scads about politics and Ron Paul – have read tons on him. I, personally, do not care for his platforms and agendas, way too ultra conservative for my tastes. I found the entire eply from Sam to be so laughable and off mark, so far from having the necessary weapons to have an intelligent debate on the topic at hand, that I felt no reply to his reply need be made.

But this

Really does speak volumes as to what my initial reaction was too.

He can throw his vote away on him in 2012, that is his right.

Some questions, because I do not have time today to debate you on this...

1. Did you know that the Federal Reserve Bank has never been audited?
2. Did you know that the Federal Reserve Bank is a PRIVATE entity? Do you know who owns it?
3. Did you know that in the history of the world, no fiat currency has ever succeeded? (assuming you understand the nuances of fiat currency)
4. Did you ever hear of Mayer Amschel Rothschild? Look up his most famous quote.
5. Did you know that the current US Deficit ($14T) is $46,000 per person, not just working adult?
6. Did you know that the entitlement programs (Soc. Sec., Medicare, etc) currently issued ($100T rounded) increase that debt burden to over $350,000 per person?
7. Did you know gold has been, and currently is, accepted currency in many countries and has been for almost 6,000 years?
8. Do you know what quantitative easing really means?
9. Have you ever read Mises, Rothbard or any other Austrian School of thought?

Full Disclosure: I grew up a low taxation, small government, fiscally conservative republican raised by a father that was the same. During my lifetime I have seen EVERY president, from both major parties, sign into law tax bills that favor the wealthy, laws that suppress entrepeneurialism in favor of corporate America, and run this fine country into the ground financially. In the last 20 years, I have seen real wages stagnate, manufacturing jobs get shipped overseas, and people become enamored with shiny new baubles, McMansions and American Idol. It sickens me. While I do not agree with more than a few of Ron Pauls’ platforms, I am smart enough to do my own research and understand that EVERYONE has an agenda and EVERYONE’s point of view should be questioned. Especially those in power, which Dr. Paul most definitely is not.

Ron Paul's MAIN political agenda since 1972 (when we went off the gold standard) has been to audit the Fed. All of my questions revolve around that one little thing.

Our entire country is predicated on money, not politics. By immersing yourself in the petty squables of Republicrat versus Democan, you miss the entire point.

And please don’t act so sacrosanct about the content on a page, especially after the good conversations we had yesterday. You scoffed at Ron Paul, and I attempted to rebut, ended up ranting and wasting the 20 minutes I didn’t want to waste initially anyway. :)

nothing you have said or may say will ever make me look ignorant, because I am not.

Politics are subjective – it is ALL about OPINION, whether you care about anyone’s other than your own or not.

No amount of arguing with you is going to change my beliefs that Dr. Paul is a bad choice for me since his ideals do not mesh with mine. Certainly, no amount of arguing with you is going to change your mind that you believe he is worthy of voting for.

Dr. Paul and his tea party “anti-fed” propaganda is not in any way relevant to the Secret Service doing their jobs by interviewing Mr. Volkmann so they can close the file on his remarks. Period.
