They are giving free passes to Josh Barnett...

He has to just take down Rogers and throw a finger punch at Arlovski’s glass chin. Too easy for him.

Thanks to Adelaide Byrd and Tony Weeks, Webster has a new word for highway robbery -- "Nam Phan."

It's great for Barnett . . .

assuming he can get his licensing/testing issues in order.

They should have made this tournament where Alistar and fedor would end up meeting in the final. I’m guessing they are tired of M1 and Alistar wants a piece of fedor asap.

by mmafanforlife on Jan 4, 2011 11:53 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Yep.

That and I think they’re wary of Fedor/M-1 wanting to renegotiate before a finale meeting with Overeem/Werdum. That would really hamstring Strikeforce.

I think

They made it that way to increase the chances of them actually meeting. More fights between means a higher chance they don’t meet. I got reem in this one over fedor

The reem wants to Avenge a loss and then lay Gaydor to rest.

I hate Fedor. I probably hate you too, but not as much as Fedor.

who cares about the SF HW title? Im just happy to get all these HW fights on SF FINALLY.

they could make it for nothing…and really it doesnt matter.

I will say the bracket sure is one sided though

I think they will have alternates

Just like in K1

Since 7/08: Fedor has fought 4, agreed to fight 5 times, Brock has fought 5, Cain has fought 6, Big Nog only 3, Mir has fought 5, Carwin has fought 4, Werdum has fought 4, JDS has fought in 6, Silva has fought in 6, and oddly, Overeem has been the HW workhorse fighting 7 MMA fights in that span (plus several k1). Theres the top ten. I love how people say that Fedor never fights...he is right on average with the rest to the top 10 in the HW division. Fanboy perception is wrong again...shocking.

Fedor!

Hope he wins this, have always been a fan of his and his fighting style. All of these guys are great though!

finally

a tournament, this is what i was waiting for.
i think it’s brilliant cause the fans love it and it’s a good way to show the real champ.
i disagree that the champ is just a competetor and it’s a shame that there is no overeem – fedor final possible but still finally some clearence.

by tinuszand on Jan 5, 2011 1:07 AM EST reply actions

looks like they learned from PRIDE

tried to set up an Iceman Wandy final in the 03 Grand Prix and Rampage had other plans. They want Reem or Werdum to fight Fedor so mise well put them in the same bracket

by nmack5 on Jan 5, 2011 1:24 AM EST reply actions

Hopefully some of these fights are on CBS

I wonder how Fedor’s pay is gonna work. If he doesnt lose, thats 3 times in a row they have to pay him and M1 $2,000,000+ or whatever they make.

I really do love the matchups but i dont get why they are putting Ubereem in the tourney

They shouldve added Del rosario in his place the guy needs to fight to earn a living and he needs a top 10 guy or a big name at least so he can progress his career.

The winner of the tourney should go up vs the champ. Then again im not gonna be mad at all that its happening this way. I am fucken stoked but Rosario definitely needs some love. They should at least add him in incase someone gets injured.

If you dont like drugs then dont do them.....give them to me!

by Khaos_Warrior on Jan 5, 2011 3:12 AM EST reply actions

Del Rosario vs Lamar Johnson is one of two reverse fights… and Overeem enters the tournament bracket as champion, so he will defend his belt first against Werdum in a 5-round match… the winner of this match will defend the title against the winner of Fedor/Bigfoot in a 5-round match… and finally the tournament final is again 5 rounds for the title. Makes actually a lot of sense to me, as Werdum is the no. 1 contender and the winner of Fedor/Bigfoot should be next in line for a title shot…

by michi on Jan 5, 2011 5:39 AM EST up reply actions

I can’t decide between Fedor or Overeem taking this thing. I realize that anything can happen in MMA so its any mans tournament, but those two are the most likely to take it. Or one of them gets wrestled by Barnett in the final. Guess we can’t count out Werdum anymore neither. VERY exciting

by RyanHobbs on Jan 5, 2011 4:02 AM EST reply actions

I wonder which is the easy side?

Good to see a big name tournament again. As good as the ufc’s roster is it seems they have no interest in making things exciting like this despite the fact that if they did a bit of market fucking research they’d see that the majority of fans love tournaments/one off type matches like the Japanese do. When this is going on in Strikeforce we’ll be treated to, edgar-maynard 3 over at Dana towers, ooh, exciting!

The ufc needs more spice in the bedroom.

I still think

Fedor will beat Overeem based on his skill and experience. But I think Reem has a good chance to knock Fedor stupid and give him his first true KO/TKO loss.

Either way it’s more interesting than any fight that the UFC has up for this year.

Not well 1st round match-ups !

I think that they haven’t put the good match-ups, because with this, we won’t be seeing any of the top 4 in the finals, and instead see guys like Arloviski, Rodgers, Barnett at the final which is no way fair to the top 4 !!!

I have a question for Dana White: What if Fedor one this tournament, shall you still not consider him the #1 MMA fighter in the world?

Apparently Overeem vs Werdum is a 5 rd title fight

does that make sense to anyone?

and Boom goes the dynamite.

by Newfie3 on Jan 5, 2011 8:00 AM EST reply actions

Well I bet........

That there is gonna be 3 title fights in this tourney. Reem vs. Werdum for the belt, if Werdum would win he would be the HW Champ, he would then defend it vs. lets’ say Fedor, if Fedor won he would be the HW Champ and defend it in the finals and the last man standing would be the HW Champ. Kinda weird, but if it’s not done this way then Overeem is basically being stripped of the belt for no reason. Gotta give Overeem credit for basically having to defend his belt 3 times in order to keep it……………

I do find it odd that Fedor and Overeem are on the same side of the bracket........

I would of thought that they would be on opposite sides in hopes for a final matchup between those 2 in the finals and not in the semis………………..

this tournament is awesom

I really want to see Fedor win it all because I wana see him fight 3 times against quality fighters and not have to wait 3 years for that to happen. Fedor vs Reem would be an easy fight for Fedor no way Reem could avoid being submitted in that one if not Ko’d. Fedor is so much better than all of these guys he got submitted by a very good jiu-jitsu HW one who also holds a win over Reem. No shame in that. He Ko’s Arlovski and Ko’d Rogers already. I don’t see either of them making the final though. Man this tourney is great because we get a ton of great fights. UFC will bad mouth it but UFC does not even have 8 good HW.

if it was UFC

cain, brock, carwin, mir, jds, nelson….2 others guys who do not deserve it. what would be really awesome is a 16 man tourney between ufc and strikeforce. think of it brock vs fedor, cain vs reem, jds vs barnett, verdume vs mir, carwin vs rogers fun stuff

by hatteras on Jan 5, 2011 9:11 AM EST reply actions

??
cain, brock, carwin, mir, jds, nelson….2 others guys who do not deserve it.

How about NOG, CC, Kongo, these guys are all as good or better than AA, Rogers or Sergei.

The first bracket here is like SF’s top four fighters and the second is there 5-8th best Barnett being a huge question mark. But BArnett who is a ground artist has 3 fighters on his side that are weak on the ground AA maybe being the best of the 3 and should easily pound and submit his way to face the winner of bracket one.

nobody really said this from what i've read

i’ve read most of the comments but not all so i apologize if someone already made this clear.. i was just as upset when the bracket was released, but when you consider the belt is on the line every fight, it does kind of make sense.. overeem will first defend his belt against werdum who deserves the next shot.. then his next defense will be against the fedor/silva winner, then the next defense will come from the winner of the other side of the bracket.. i hope barnett wins so overeem could beat 3 solid opponents this yr.. and yes, i think overeem is still champ next yr and HOPEFULLY negotiating with ufc..

by etexdeathmetal on Jan 5, 2011 9:37 AM EST reply actions

How is this even a "tournament"?

The first quarterfinals are in February, the next ones not until April, they “hope” to have the finals in September if there are no injuries…

The UFC could have the same kind of “tournament” by saying that the next fights involving (for example) Shogun, Rashad, Machida, Couture, Bader, Jones, and some random fourth fight between a couple of names (Rampage, Thiago Silva, Little Nog, Franklin…) are the quarterfinals, then the semis three or four months later, etc…

Yeah, theoretically Strikeforce is putting a belt on the line… but all we need to do is to look at Overeem’s great efforts to defend it to know what the SF HW belt is worth. The thing is a Happy Meal toy.

by MattNY on Jan 5, 2011 9:39 AM EST reply actions

What it does for SF matt is forces the fighters to face the next guy in line

Fedor and Overeem will be forced to fight eachother regardless if they both win were if it was not a tournament style as we have seen they could not come to terms to face eachother…hopefully this will change that and give SF the control they need

what about contracts?

fighters pull out due to a contract dispute. Seeing as the russian renegotiating machine is done after his first fight, coker has to pull something out his ass to make sure fedor stays put.

I like the style, glaD they did the match ups in good competitive spirit, but i see things failing with this after the first round.

that he signed a multi fight deal… so as long as coker lays down the law, should be ok.

if or when fedor and overeem win and their is some contract dispute from one side i would .....

call the side who had the contract dispute chicken and their fighter not deserving a shot at being heavyweight champion.

On february 5th 2011 at UFC 126 Jon "Bones" Jones will show the world that their was no need for the MMA community to hype this man because this guy is a beast with many skills and i personally will feel Ryan "Darth" Bader's pain after this fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

Are the seedings...

Lopsided? Yeah, sure.

BUT

This means we’ll see Overeem/Werdum and likely Fedor/Overeem and Fedor or Overeem/Barnett.

Those are really the only fights I would want to see and if SF is gonna tickle the tournament to help produce those fights, I’m cool with that.

by Applejack McNeil on Jan 5, 2011 9:50 AM EST reply actions

i don’t normally do this, but I HAVE to put this in CAPS.

WHY WOULD YOU SET IT UP WHERE IN THEORY FEDOR COULD FACE ARLOVSKI in the final?

Seriously. Arlovski did well to start but still ended up KO’d completely asleep by the close. WTF.
WHO RUNS THIS clown-@ss organization and makes decisions like this?

btw, I think Kharitonov will dismantle arlovski.
what we all want to see is overeem vs fabricio. fabricio could easily catch overreem again and sub him for the 2nd time.

overreem hasn’t faced any legit mma competition in awhile…i hope he’s been doing his jits in between all the cans he’s faced and training for K-1. b/c fabricio will take that arm home if he gets a chance. period. look how quickly he locked onto fedor and found the submission.
