Can Couture keep Machida against the cage? No.
  1. Can Couture uppercut catch Machida? No.
  2. Can Couture take down Machida effortlessly? No.
  3. Can Couture out strike Machida? No.
  4. Will this fight be exciting? Well . . . technically, it would be interesting to see how they match up but I know the outcome.

No impossible but I haven’t seen anyone mount any good offense against him in that position.

Randy is not supposed to win...

Dana needs Machida to win after two losses in a row. There is no way to keep the appearance of Machida being a top 5 fighter if he loses to Bader/Jones loser (notice Bader is first for the loser argument ;)) or the loser of Franklin/Forrest, which could happen.

If Machida lost three in a row, the UFC would have to bring Jardine back to get this guy a name that he can crush, since Tito is going to cut.

Notes:
  • I don’t subscribe to “Randy is not supposed to win” theory, we heard it before
  • I don’t buy “Dana needs Machida to win after two losses in a row.” White and Silva knows that their personal favorites will win and lose just the same. After all, didn’t White go to Japan only to see Liddell get dominated by Rampage?

I really don’t place too much stock into the UFC brass setting up guys to win this match or that match to keep them in the top 10 or top 5. After a while, the competition simply get tougher and tougher. I think its a waste a time to wonder about what story line Dana White would like the most because he’s been in the business long enough to realize . . . sh*t happens.

To be clear, I understand that some times some guys get favorable matches but 9 times out of 10, there’s a reason why Unknown Fighter is competing against Star Fighter.

Underdogs, unknown guys occasionally come out on top as we recently witness when Dustin Poirier dominated Josh Grispi.

After all, didn’t White go to Japan only to see Liddell get dominated by Rampage?

There was zero inkling of Liddell losing to Page or DW would not have gone to Japan (and has since not gone back). He believed it was an easy run to the title to beat a Wandy that was only OK in the UFC or he would not have gone. DW admitted as much.

While I understand that you are a big Couture fan (from the Hopkins>Couture laugher below), it doesn’t seem strange to you that a top 5 fighter is in the co-main event against a guy barely in the top 20 who has said he is only looking for intriguing fights? Couture essentially cherry picks an opponent and you are ok with it?

I understand that some times some guys get favorable matches but 9 times out of 10, there’s a reason why Unknown Fighter is competing against Star Fighter

Are we on the same page? This statement, from you, essentially confirms my argument, yet you don’t subscribe to the rationale in your first post. While DW is not as obvious as Pride/K-1/Dream is with the one-sided laughers, there is a reason Jim Miller is fighting Kamal Shalorous and Kurt Peelegrino is fighting Gleison TIbau in NJ. It is the same reason Grispi fought Poirier. It is relieving that it backfires sometimes.

Some times its cool when a top fighter or a champion faces a guy not in the Top 5 or 10. Personally I always thought Couture’s ranking in MMA was a joke, even before his Lesnar fight. It is weird, odd and kind of cool that Couture has been able to dictate his career at this point. Hey Matt Hughes is doing it too. They deserve it.

Couture is looking at the exit sign. I’m not mad that he asked to face Shogun or Machida. They’re not easy match ups.

There has been many situations in Couture’s past where he was not supposed to win. That’s kind of the narrative in his career. The backfire happens often, I think White and Silva are aware of that. I don’t think they really think too much about it. They’re just putting on a viable fight for Couture. It’s a fight he’s talked about when he was a heavyweight. Mcahida respects this fight. Shogun would respect this fight if he had the opportunity, he’s been talking about a possible match up for quite a while.

It bothers me that the "sport" caters to the so-called legends of the sport

While Brett Favre proved beyond a shadow of a doubt this year that he is no longer the player he once was, MMA is so shallow in top-end talent that we get regurgitated Couture, Liddell, Ortiz and Shamrock WAY past their staying power.

At least Couture was smart enough to go out against a “top 5” guy. IF he beats Machida, I will completely eat these words, but I honestly feel that this fight is a boost for Machida, nothing more. I see a 30-27 UD on all cards.

by Ulf Murphy on Jan 3, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I see a stoppage victory for Machida.

But yeah, you’re right that UFC, Dream, Strikeforce caters to the legends of the sport. Liddell did nothing but prove that he just simply could not compete being droppped in all of his last fights except against Wanderlei Silva.

Couture is a weird animal in UFC. They put so many dollars behind his name, he’s likeable and marketable enough to run his own victory lap. Also Couture has been kind of like Favre throughout his entire career. With all the walk-outs, contract renegotiations and not to mention a competitor with so many title-shot opportunities it borders on ridiculous. (I don’t think I’m allowed to say that the title shots were gifts from the UFC brass for simply being Randy Couture.)

Cant really se how Randy is gonna beat Machida either

First minute: Both being catious trying to find their rhytm, Randy recieves a few legkicks and kicks to the body, tries to shoot or/and clinch but Machidas not there or/and shrugs him off.

Second or third minute of the first round: Randy rushes in and gets a knee to the liver or solar plexus and goes down. Machida finishes with strikes!

Randy looks old as hell and the Machida-hype starts again…

by Zlatan, My Hero on Jan 3, 2011 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

I'll be betting big on Randy.

I thought Randy was passed it but after seeing him corner Maynard the other night I realized the mans a killer.

A motivated Randy is a killer kids, a calculated killer at that. You see him the other night? He was screaming at Maynard, I feel sorry for machida.

Unlucky Machida, you just ran into a motivated Randy. That’s not your fault though. You can back out, fake an injury like Cain and GTFO of there, you cannot handle this Randy.

by danago on Jan 3, 2011 10:08 AM EST via mobile reply actions

i was screaming at Maynard too

how could he not finish that fight?

a Motivated couture who basically announced his retirement last week and wants to persue a movie career?

Did Randy kill someone as cornerman that we are unaware of?

and Boom goes the dynamite.

Dude watch it again. I was there live, I witnessed it in flesh. It was scary, everyone turned around and was like ‘WTF someone stop Randy’. Look into his eyes, the guys a killer.

And Edgar slipped on the UFC sponsor logos. He went from one to another and couldn’t regain his balance.

Still refusing to give Frankie credit huh?

The next fight will be a worse for Maynard. The luster is gone, all that supposed size and power and layngray’ing was just all talk. Frankie shut him down everywhere.

As far as couture, not beating that dead horse.

If the round is too close, it's 10-10, NOT flip a coin 10-9 or late takedown FTW.

me not giving frankie credit?

I dont ever remember not giving frankie credit. the heart he showed on Saturday was unreal. The way he bounced back was crazy! And he improved leaps and bounds from their first fight where the TD’s were the key. Gray couldnt get frank down at all, it was very cool to see, esp since Gray is known for his world class wrestling

having said all of that, Gray still had Franky wobbley enough in Rd 1 than he should have been able to put him away

Co-Main Event?

This better not be the co-main event for what is supposed to be the biggest card in UFC history. I think the UFC over-rates his popularity and excitement level.

I know.

It’s not like Randy has ever had a title or an exciting fight. forget him.

this definately wont be an exciting fight

id like to see Edgar/Maynard as the co main event

That's all in the past

Would you out Matt Hughes in the co-main event because he held a title a few years ago and had some exciting fights?
For an ordinary card, it would make for a decent co-main event, but not for the biggest event ever.

Peter Aerts has been at the highest level of kickboxing for 17+ years.

Top flight competition all the way. Hopkins’ resume is what it is for a reason and despite getting robbed against Pascal, he showed that he can hang with these kids. Both of them were at one point the greatest in their sports. Couture doesnt even come close to touching their levels.

You kids would be so lucky to have Master Killer Couture in your corner. Tactics Over Aggression.

i still dont get how this and gsp/shields

Are the main and co-main of “the biggest ufc event ever”…they’re good match-ups…shields is about as far from exciting you can get…they better have one hell of a lineup to call a card that…in all honesty it just sounds like another ufc event to me..not; “the biggest ufc event ever”

I doubt it wil be but think about this...

the only titles fights that are pretty much set in the near future are lhw and mw. Im betting they will add 1 or maybe even 2 more title fights to this card. Bantamweight title, featherweight title (if Aldo is healthy), lightweight title or interim heavyweight title could all have a possible spot on this card.

by warlocker19 on Jan 3, 2011 11:41 AM EST reply actions

Let's hope so

I am interested in seeing Randy/Machida. It may be the base instinct that has people drive by a car crash slowly, but still I want to see it.

May be they’ll put the rematch for the lightweight on this card?
