Mario Yamasaki in charge of Silva-Belfort title fight at UFC 126. Let us all pray that he pays attention to this one
Yep Mario Yamasaki. MMAJunkie broke the bad news that Mario Yamasaki would be in charge of the title fight between Silva and Belfort. I know referees do not have it easy, but I wanted to show what occured at the hands of Mario Yamasaki during the Barry-Beltran fight. I will describe briefly below the happening during the Beltran-Barry fight at the Fight For the Troops event over the past weekend, where, yes, Mario Yamasaki was in charge of the match.
I dont have a link to the video, but you can go to UFC.com and "buy" it. Anyhow go lets go to about 1:38 left of round 3. This is when Beltran got an accidental eye poke. Beltran was visibly in pain and Mario Yamasaki yells "stop, stop, stop.......TIME" as he motions time out with his hands, then goes towards Beltran. Mario's next word's to Beltran are what is the most amazing. Mario looks at Beltran and says..."what happened?...your leg?...your legs?". Beltran looks disgustingly at Mario and says emphatically, "NO, my EYE!!!!!"
So, basically what happened is Mario had NO CLUE what had just happened and then called time out because "something was wrong" with Beltran. This has happened before with Mario, Herb Dean. as well as other referees. I know referees get a lot of criticism and their job is very difficult, but they cant call time out in a mma fight when they thought someone got hurt. If Mario thought Beltran's leg was hurt. then the ONLY option there would of been to call the fight over due to tko injury. Calling time out to figure what is wrong is not an option. If Beltran was injured due to leg kicks, then Mario just gave him sufficient time to recover and get back into the fight. Just imagine if Mario did this everytime someone got hurt or knocked down. This guy needs to pay attention more.
Anyone else notice this??.

he asked if it was his leg
if beltran had said yes, he would have called the fight over…do you know how hard it is to see an eye poke in real time if youre standing on the opposite side of the poke…thats why fighters have to mention it the majority of the time…yamasaki is a good ref, one of the better ones actually, and i dont think anyone should have a problem with him in charge of the one

If Mazz was reffing he woulda just stopped the fight and called a TKO.
If Big Dan was reffing he woulda poked Beltran’s eye before Barry got to it.
Fighting solves everything.
That was a big deal?
He asked if it was his leg seeing as it became a door and Barry’s leg a battering ram. If asking is a problem then god save us all from your wrath!

and no Mario didnt give him time to recover
maybe he thought it was a legit injury and if so, would have ended the fight. When Horn got smacked up by Liddell at UFC 54, Horn who said he was blinded got up calmly and had the ref end it lol

it doesnt matter
A ref has to make a decision, NOT call timeout and ask the fighter what happened. IF it were an injury due to leg kicks, then the fight should of been stopped immediately(not a time out called).
If Beltran would NOT of got eye poked then he woudl of has a timeout and time to recover from another nasty leg kick. Just imagine if refs did that all the time…anytime someone grimaces in pain, they call a timeout and ask the fighter???
The problem is the ref is SUPPOSD to know, NOT ask the fighter what happened
so Mario has no clue what happened and WHATEVER the fighter says is what goes?? I know its not that big of a deal, but you cant have refs calling a timeout in the fight because he thought he got kicked real hard in the legs…A ref does NOT stop a fight due to pain inflicted by strikes. And better yet, he doesnt call timeout and ASK the fighter what happened???
the herb dean / buentello one was a lot worse.

What would you have said
If he just let the fight on because he didn’t see the eye poke and Beltran got finished.. In this case if Beltran had stated it was his leg he would of called the fight off and it would of been a TKO victory, I don’t see much wrong with that.
its the fact that he called timeout because he thought Barry kicked him too hard in the leg
That is my whole deal with this. If every fighter looked at ref that way every time they got rocked becaseu they know Mario will call timeout becaseu he didnt see it
People will always complain about refs.

I think Mario is quite a good ref
There have been many a time when a fighter has gotten poked in the eye and the ref has not even seen it and allowed the fight to continue, Also pat barry has broke some dudes leg before from his kicks and Mario is prob very aware of this, so when Barry landed that leg kick / Poke combo and Mario saw beltrane leg buckle, and then falling to the ground just holding his head and not his eye it would be an easy mistake to make.
Refs make mistakes in all sports, they dont have the luxury of 12 different camera angles, and Mario definatly makes more good calls than wrong ones, so i have no problem with him being the Ref….
just as along as cecil peoples or what his name is, is not judging then im good!
