Passport Issues - Curious about going to UFC129 in Toronto.

I am thinking about going to UFC 129 in Toronto, and I am an American citizen, and I just wondered what the border regulations are currently?  I went to Canada once before to see the Expos play, and all I needed was my driver's license and birth certificate, but that was 2004.  I know there are many Canadians on this site, plus Americans who probably traveled to Canada to see the last UFC in Montreal, and any input would be helpful on the current regulations.  I don't have a passport, just wondering if I needed one.  I also plan on driving, not flying.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
