Round two: Johnson ducks under a hook and gets a easy double leg take down. Johnson now on top in full guard much to the dismay of the Seattle crowd. Punches from the top from Johnson. Hardy going for a kimura and Johnson just pounding away with body shots with his free arm. Johnson once again powers out and is back to throwing some punches on top. More body shots from Johnson. Half guard now for Johnson. Johnson now landing some BIG lefts from the top. Hammer fists now from Johnson. Short elbow from Johnson. The ref stands them up now to the crowds enjoyment. All Johnson again in round 2, Hardy needs a stoppage. 10-9 Johnson.
Round three: Johnson goes for a knee and Hardy for some unknown reason goes for a take down and Johnson easily just puts Hardy on his back. Hardy again going for a kimura and Johnson just riding it out. Hardy should have kept this on the feet. Hammer fists from the bottom from Hardy. Johnson now takes the back, Hardy to his feet though. Knee from Johnson from behind. Johnson lets go and lands a head kick and right hand. Now Johnson just shoots and puts Hardy to the mat again with ease and Johnson has the back and is going for a choke. Johnson now just throwing punches and landing hard from the back. Hardy seems helpless on the mat, and Johnson now going for the choke again. Johnson jumps over to full mount and has an arm triangle in tight! Johnson just cranking the neck HARD now. Hardy doesnt look like he is going to tap though. Johnson just unleashes a flurry of HARD punches to end the fight. Johnson dominated that contest wire to wire with a great ground game. He looked impressive. 10-9 Johnson.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 24 LIVE "PRELIMS" PLAY-BY-PLAY COVERAGE (FACEBOOK):
Geno here
John Hathaway vs. Kris McCray (170-pound limit)
Round one: Immediately they start exchanging. Clinch goes nowhere. More exchanging and another clinch. McCray pressing the action. Kris is working the takedown but can't get it. Hathaway says screw it and rolls for the leg. Locks in a nasty heel hook. Good god, McCray somehow survived but his ligaments in his ankles are probably torn. McCray in John's half guard up against the cage. Hathaway trying to get back up but McCray is keeping the pressure on. He gets up anyway and they pummel against the cage again. McCray slams him back down to the mat though and they reset the previous exchange. Stand up, pummel and another takedown from McCray. Finally back up as the round ends. 10-9 McCray.
Round two: Missed the opening but came back to McCray executing another big takedown. Hathaway worked for a triangle and then an armbar but McCray rolled out. Impressive job by Kris right there. They get back up after scrambling and my Facebook stream is choppy. Sorry for the technical difficulties folks. Okay, it's back to a tired looking McCray and Hathaway shoots under. They lock up and John is working a single leg. McCray defending against the cage. Staying busy but paying the price for it. Shot from McCray gets stuffed easily and he might have trouble in the third. Whoa, Hathaway gets a takedown but gets reversed. McCray ends the round on top. Not bad at all. 10-9 Hathaway (I guess).
Round three: Hathaway opens with a knee and gets a takedown. He's the fresher fighter and he's acting like it, throwing plenty of punches while McCray looks like he's just holding on. He's doing a good job of it though, as he's not taking a lot of damage. Elbow lands for Hathaway. He passes to half guard. Landing short elbows but McCray is doing great not to let him pass. Once again, McCray sweeps him though and he's on top now. He's gassed, though, so he's not doing anything. Hathaway landing elbows while McCray just drives into him. Hathaway gets a takedown after he makes his way back to his feet. Hathaway is all over him landing shots as time ticks away. McCray is completely gone, just dead tired but he's still in there winging punches. Another takedown from Hathaway and if he was given either of the first two rounds then this fight is his. 10-9 Hathaway.
Final result: John Hathaway def. Kris McCray via split decision
-end-
Jon Madsen vs. Mike Russow (265-pound limit)
Round one: Time for the big boys. Madsen with big power on the overhand rights. Russow with the first and then second tie ups but Madsen escapes. Russow is pushing in for the clinch and Madsen has shrugged him off each time. He's looking for that big punch. If Todd Duffee couldn't knock him out, though, can Jon Madsen? We'll see. Russow's gameplan isn't working but he's not adjusting. Madsen looks for a knee that gets a big "OOHH" from the crowd. Madsen runs away and looks up at the clock, taking a deep breath. Minute left in the first round, big guy, you can do this. Mike lands a few shots coming in and initiates a clinch against the cage. Boo birds out, and they separate but everyone looks gassed already. 10-9 Russow.
Round two: Huffing and puffing they come, out for the second. Looks like a repeat pattern here. Either guy rushes in, they exchange, clinch briefly and back out. Repeat that process. Russow gets him down and takes his back but Madsen gets back up. Jon rushes in again but misses and Russow takes his back before taking him down and pounding on him a bit. Madsen's left eye is all jacked up now. Russow wraps his arms around and he was working towards... something but taking too damn long so the ref stood them up. Rogan tells us Madsen can't see out of his left eye. They clinch and the ref separates them after about 10 seconds. Here's a ref that listens to the crowd. What makes it great is right after the reset, they clinched right back up. The round ends with Russow on top in side control. Madsen's eye, really is shut. 10-9 Russow.
The doctors look at Madsen's eye in between rounds and decide his eye his too messed up for him to continue. I won't complain with that. It's totally shut.
Final result: Mike Russow def. Jon Madsen via technical knockout in round 2
-end-
Alex Caceres vs. Mackens Semerzier (145-pound limit)
Round one: Head kick right out of the gate from Caceres. Mack answers with one of his one. Bruce Leroy rushes him and they clinch up. Mack works at it and gets a slam takedown. On top in full guard up against the fence. Back up they go and Semerzier sends him back down with a trip. Back up again and once again Mack takes him down, this time landing in full mount. Leroy rolls and Mack takes his back. Got him belly down and flattened out. Looking for the choke. Alex bucks up to shake him off but Mackens is holding on. Boom, there it is. Just like that, Mack locked in the rear-naked choke and Alex just tapped and started shaking his head.
Final result: Mackens Semerzier def. Alex Caceres via submission (rear-naked choke) in round 1
-end-
Sean McCorkle vs. Christian Morecraft (265-pound limit)
Round one: Oooh, no touch of the gloves. This means war. Leg kick to start from Morecraft. Quick clinch against the cage. The crowd starts to boo after some inactivity and McCorkle quickly executes a takedown and ends up on top. Christian throws his legs over but gets nothing. Sean looks to pass and Morecraft isolates a leg. He's got a deep kneebar, then a heel hook but Sean gets out. Morecraft on top now after a scramble. Hoe postures up and they scramble again, this time with Morecraft passing to half guard. Ha. Morecraft's mouth piece went flying out while he's landing big elbows and he picked it up and put it back in on his own. Crowd applauds. Christian stands up and the crowd boos heartily at the lack of action. McCorkle is baiting him, asking for him to come down but Morecraft isn't taking the bait. Morecraft finally comes in with punches and he transitions to the back, landing shots. The round comes to a close with Morecraft in side control landing clean elbows. That was an easy round to score. 10-9 Morecraft.
Round two: Both guys come out swinging and the thing I notice in all this is the fact that both guys have extremely awkward punches. McCorkle more so than Morecraft. They start brawling against the cage and Morecraft is tagging and bagging him. They go to the ground with Sean looking to take the back. Can't get it and instead works the kimura but loses it. Morecraft is on top now, up against the cage and landing big shots. This is starting to look like it's just a matter of time. McCorkle is busted up and bleeding while Morecraft continues to land clean. McCorkle is taking deep breaths and looking out of it. Christian lets him up and they immediately clinch back up. Leaning on each other now, and Morecraft lands an errant nut shot. McCorkle gets five minutes to recover and I expect he'll take all five. They give a close up of his face and he's completely gone. Audience boos and he continues to take his time. The crowd boos louder as McCorkle continues to "recover." Goldberg tells us a total of two minutes elapsed there. Felt like an hour. They exchange and McCorkle has his hands down. He shoots in and gets stuffed. Morecraft locks in a standing guillotine and he's got it deep. McCorkle didn't tap, but he went out on his feet. Weird as hell to see him just fall flat after Morecraft let him go. That was wild.
Final result: Christian Morecraft def. Sean McCorkle via submission (guillotine) in round 2
-end-
Michael McDonald vs. Edwin Figueroa (135-pound limit)
Round one: Big swing from Figueroa to start and McDonald stays tight and rushes him. He's rocking Edwin. Big time brawling here early. Crowd loving it. Both guys are absolutely throwing bombs and while they aren't all landing, it certainly looks exciting. Figueroa walking around. The little guys are really swinging big but they're so damn speedy, it's tough to land anything. Trade high kicks. McDonald lands a big counter right hand and Edwin just eats it. Superman punch misses from Figueroa and McDonald rushes with a knee and a few punches. Man, these dudes are going crazy. McDonald gets a takedown and he's on top now. Figueroa pushes his way out and they reset standing. A big shot right at the bell from McDonald staggered Figueroa, to the point where he almost fell down. That was awesome. 10-9 McDonald.
Round two: Head kick lands but McDonald pushes and gets a big takedown on it. Ends up sinking the hooks in and gets a deep rear-naked choke but Figueroa actually gets out. Holy shit. That was impressive. Still in a bad spot though with McDonald all over his back with both hooks in. They turn and McDonald is working a triangle but Figueroa fights his way out of that too. Jesus, this kid wont' go away. Figueroa on top now but once again McDonald locks in a triangle. Figueora AGAIN escapes and McDonald switches it over to the other side and works the arm with it. This Figueroa kid is insane. He refuses to tap. He slides his head out and is still going. McDonald again throws his legs up and I'm actually fearing for this kid's life at this point. Figueroa stands up and starts landing some big punches. McDonald goes to stand and Figueroa lands punches while trying to take his back. Holy hell. 10-9 McDonald.
Round three: McDonald has no energy in his legs after all that work in the second round. This is the time for Edwin to take advantage but he doesn't look like he has enough in him. Both guys are tired and struggling to throw each punch. They brawl against the fence and there's the big shots again. Rogan is telling us McDonald is hurt but he just looks gassed. He slides under and gets a takedown. Lazy as shit, but he got it. Three minutes to go in the fight and he just needs to ride this one out to get the win. He passes to side control but stands up and lets Figueroa back up. Another shot leads to another double leg takedown. Into half guard, passes to side control. Sweep from Figueroa and he ends up in side control. Good god, this is fun. McDonald works his way back to full guard with just over a minute left in the fight. McDonald looks for an arm but Figueroa escapes. Figueroa backs out and they reset standing with just a minute remaining. Edwin looking for the knockout but McDonald squashes those hopes with yet another takedown and this one is all his. McDonald ends up on top and that was a fun fight in both these guys debuts. They hug each other at the horn. 10-9 McDonald.
Final result: Michael McDonald def. Edwin Figueroa via unanimous decision

i want to see the line on hathaway vs mccray. my guess hathaway -450 moneyline.
On february 5th 2011 at UFC 126 Jon "Bones" Jones will show the world that their was no need for the MMA community to hype this man because this guy is a beast with many skills and i personally will feel Ryan "Darth" Bader's pain after this fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

Was an awesome fight.
Figueroa was awesome in that second round. The escape artist.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.
Can't believe that Jesus guy
Clearly he has no loyalty, training those 2 guys against each other.
Seriously good fight, I’ve found new respect for both guys. Figueroa’s technique was lacking but he’s tough as hell, almost got KO’d and submitted numerous times and still kept coming back. Macdonald showed a lot of talent but also his youth and inexperience, he gassed himself out by attempting so many submissions. A bit more patience and he may very well have gotten the finish, instead he was barely mobile in the third.

Okay, this confuses the hell out of me
You’re McCray. Or Baroni.
Your cardio sucks. It’s cost you fights. It’s painfully obvious to anyone with eyes that it is one of the main reasons you can’t hit it big.
WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU NOT RUNNING YOUR ASS OFF?! Why is your cardio STILL shit after all this time?
I don't always rage, but when I do, I prefer doing it over Bellator judging. Stay angry, my friends.
thats why i cant excuse anyone who gasses at the UFC level.
It just means you have to go back to the regional scene. Very unprofessional if u ask me.

Apparently, there was ANOTHER inverted triangle in Bellator. Richard Hale over Nik Fekete.
Wow.

Damn John's still susceptible to sweeps
Thought he’d have worked on his scrambles after Pyle was able to take him down and reverse position so many times. Disappointing. Had a great third round with domination on top but I don’t think it’ll be enough to get the decision.

I told you kids Rua was gonna run through Jones, but no one listened. The hype train has made its last stop, and the "mighty" Jon Jones has fallen. Shogun tore him up with his muay thai, and dominated in every aspect of the fight. He came in fully prepared and got the job done, like I knew he would. Still the greatest p4p of all time. And STILL UFC LHW Champ, Mauricio Shogun Rua.

Agreed but the first 2 rounds were close
Savage’s sweeps and takedowns were the reason I gave him the first 2 rounds but don’t forget John almost made him tap with that foot lock and Savage was done by the third round. When you clearly lose the last round you always risk losing the fight in this sport, especially when the first 2 aren’t clear cut.

hey i had money on kris
but after the second and third him gassing slowly and not being able to do much i was seeing hathaway was winning -
he landed more striking shot and did gain more cointrol through the clinch and TDs in the 2nd and 3rd…
im disappointed mcray was in a parlay with russow Davis and sodallah that would have paid quite well and russow for me was the questionable one but he came through
im disappointed in the decision but i dont think it was the wrong one

You really notice it in interviews
He doesn’t like doing them and makes some smart arse comments at time. I don’t mind that but him admitting that he wants to avoid dangerous no-names (Lil Nog, Jones, Davis) pissed me off. He also ducked Machida and took an easy fight in Ireland instead.

English MMA is lousy
And good point on wrestling over here, we have a few schools but don’t produce any elite wrestlers and most people think wrestling = WWE. Even when an Olympic hopeful was being interviewed on the radio about amateur wrestling he was asked about WWE and Big Daddy.
Unless we produce a super athlete with incredible heart and dedication who travels the world cross training in every discipline including wrestling then we’re never going to produce anyone better than a mid-level kickboxer. Canada have the same problem but they have GSP.

Bisping's got decent wrestling and looks good against other strikers but he'll get exposed against the likes of Sonnen, Okami and Marquardt
His takedown “attempts” against Hendo were laughable. And he’s actually the best English wrestler in MMA, which shows how awful we are at it.

Same day weigh-ins
Lets start a movement!
"Why am I here? Why does my mind have wings? Why do blue midgets hit me with fish?!" - The Tick
Not only that...
There are really no standards for scorting other than vague criteria like “effective striking/grappling, octagon control, etc.” Leaves too much room for interpretation. By those statments one could make the argument that takedowns and maintaining top position = octagon control and are just as important as crips stand-up, even of dry humpers like Fitch do nothing with the position to finish the fight.
by Captain Ernesto on Mar 26, 2011 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions
The problem with a standardized scoring system...
is that people will easily work the system, like boxing in the olympics. I think there has to be judges discretion, but at the moment the judges seem to have no idea what MMA is.
Maybe better educated judges,
"Why am I here? Why does my mind have wings? Why do blue midgets hit me with fish?!" - The Tick
Good point...
Maybe a hybrid then, where at least they outline what should score more a little more clearly…i.e. define what effective striking and grappling is i.e. getting in a dominant position and using striking or grappling techniques to try and finish the fight, as opposed to assigning an actual point value to each strike or takedown. And yes refs should be required to watch more fights and maybe spar/roll with some real fighters as a prerequesite.

you can tell it was god cuz god doesn't punch
"You should study pokemon to get stronger." -Kazushi Sakuraba
No he lands head kicks
And he did punch on the ground when Lil Nog lost wrist control. Getting free to strike is easier said than done, it may not look pretty but it’s tough to get much done on the ground against Lil Nog. Davis did a good job maintaining his composure and not tiring himself out or abandoning the gameplan when he was struggling to get the takedown or do damage on the ground, a lot of maturity from a young rookie.

well, 4/4 on the main card tonight. 5/5 last week.
Joe Dimaggio, I’m coming after your f’n streak!
Wrestlers shouldn’t be headlining the UFC. They should stop with that, cross wrestlers off as headliners. I’m done with mma and I’m done here. Peace kids.
And STILL UFC LHW Champ, Mauricio Shogun Rua.

is it just me or have black dudes buttfucked their way to victory this weekend?
lashley
rumble
davis…
its becoming a black thing…black dudes buttfuck their way to victory…
think about it…
king mo
lashley
rashad
koscheck
phil davis
jon jones
rumble tonight
and it seems like all the new wrestlers coming out are all black…
brazilians are jits and muy thai
black fighters are humpers
i see what you did there
maybe just the ones you have crushes on
"You should study pokemon to get stronger." -Kazushi Sakuraba
So Bones made Shogun tap out due to humping too hard?
Good to know. And Rumble has laid and prayed once in his career and he still outstruck Hardy. Everyones going to do that against Dan because his TDD is so poor and he’s not that good off his back.

you could switch jones and rumble around...this was the first time rumble has humped anyone, but this was also the first time that jones has really ever outstruck anyone on the feet
he has won every fight before shogun because of his ground game…from outwrestling bonner to gnp vera to gnp the janitor to choking out bader…its all been because of his ground game…
and davis talked all that shit about standing and banging and then pussed out and had became involved in the WORST fight of the night…they had all that shit talking about how they should have been headlining the card…but the crowd was booing the FUCK outta that shit…just like everyone watching at home was
i see what you did there

Good win for Davis but he has a lot to improve on before facing the elite
Lil Nog showed good TDD but again he struggled to defend the single legs. Davis did some good ground and pound but couldn’t do that much damage because Lil Nog is that good on his back. Credit to Davis for remaining patient and eventually doing enough to win. It’s only his 9th fight so to beat Lil Nog at this stage of your career in your first main event is huge, looking forward to his next fight. I say give him the Bader-Tito winner (Bader).

good breakdown
I think Davis was legit scared of Lil Nog’s guard, so he was sort of hanging back for much of the time on the ground. His best work was when he had his back and wasn’t worried about submissions. Davis certainly didn’t look elite. Would like to see how he would do against Bader or Rampage.
Davis-Bader would be a great fight
Both guys are good wrestlers and are on the fringes of the top level but still have a lot to work on. They have similar skillsets and similar records, that fight makes a lot of sense to me. Rampage-Davis/Bader will be a good fight in the future.

Good assessment
I’ve seen folks saying that Davis may be the only guy at LHW able to defeat Bones but he’s definitely not on that level yet, has a lot of work to do on his stand-up for sure. Also think the match up with Bader would be a great litmus test to see where he’s at in the division.
by Captain Ernesto on Mar 27, 2011 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions
I still think that Phil has the potential to challenge Bones one day but he's not at that level yet
He passed this test but still showed that he has a lot to work on before reaching that level. As long as he keeps improving and gaining experience against talented veterans like Lil Nog then one day he will be ready to give Bones a good fight.

Yeah once he becomes more of a threat with his stand-up he'll be a tough out for anyone.
Even though this wasn’t one of his more exciting fights I’m a fan of this kid and am looking forward to seeing how he improves.

I don't see him being able to offer Bones much of anything...
even in a year or two. I think Bones will be able to keep the fight standing and wreck him there.
