The first time the UFC set up a fight for a featherweight top contender, in this case Josh Grispi, he was dominated by heavy underdog Dustin Poireir en route to a decision loss.
This time around, the honor went to Mark Hominick, who was promised a shot at Jose Aldo's 145-pound strap at UFC 129 if he could beat George Roop.
No upset tonight.
Hominick came out and completely dominated the fight from start to finish. He came out fast and took the center of the cage, essentially proclaiming it his own.
A short time, and a huge right later, and he really drove that point home.
One of his first punches of the fight landed clean and dropped Roop. But instead of pouncing on his clearly badly hurt opponent, "The Machine" chose to let him get back up.
The punishment kept coming.
Roop shot in rather weakly for a takedown and Hominick easily avoided it. He landed a winging left hand that hurt Roop yet again, and one left later, it was all over.
In the post-fight interview, Hominick said he wanted to come out and make a statement.
We heard you loud and clear, sir. Jose Aldo, are you listening?
