When did Gray get 3 takedowns?

I only remember 1…in the 3rd rd. Unless they’re counting something that happened during that mayhem in Rd 1…the details of which I remember about as well as Frankie

Frankie stuffed 13 of 13 of Gray's TD shoots!!! Go Frankie!

They’re saying Maynard’s 3 TDs were from the clinch and that he was 0-13 with his shoots.

No wonder Frankie is devastated. Can you imagine listening to pretty much EVERY professional fighter say you were gonna get taken down and controlled all night, then you survive a pounding and still stuff EVERY single shot by your bigger stronger opponent, AND STILL COME UP SHORT! Poor Frankie. It’s like being a soldier in the trenches of WWI (“the War to End All Wars”) and as soon as the peace treaty is announced, they tell you WWII will start in 6 months in the same damn trench you just crawled out of.

This isn't as bad

as Machida/Shogun, but it’s in the neighborhood. I can only really see Maynard taking 2 rounds, and even if one was 10-8, that’s 48-47.

I'm your huckleberry.

by Brizzle T on Jan 2, 2011 2:33 AM EST up reply actions

You are not very good at math are you?

by Jimbobb on Jan 2, 2011 2:40 AM EST up reply actions

Umm yeah, I am.

1 round at 10-9, 1 round at 10-8, and 3 rounds at 9-10=47, dipshit.

I'm your huckleberry.

by Brizzle T on Jan 2, 2011 2:42 AM EST up reply actions

That was not your math fail buddy.

by Jimbobb on Jan 2, 2011 2:45 AM EST up reply actions

And as bad as UFC judging has been,

I wasn’t surprised by any score.

I'm your huckleberry.

by Brizzle T on Jan 2, 2011 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

um NO

If Gray won 2 rounds, with one being 10-8, the score is 47-47, which is how I and the correct judge saw the fight. I imagine one judge gave Frankie Rd 3 and the other gave Gray Rd 5…neither of which would be unreasonably errant.

"Who's da MASTA?!!!"

by (shonuff) on Jan 2, 2011 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

I agree the only rounds that were clear cut were Round 1 was a 10-8 at least and then 2 and 4 were definitely 9-10

by Jimbobb on Jan 2, 2011 2:48 AM EST up reply actions

I'm good with the draw i guess...

it was a very close fight… I gave rnd 2,4, barely 5 to frankie

by THORAZINE on Jan 2, 2011 2:52 AM EST up reply actions

I could have seen round 5 as 10-10 but they never do that

by Jimbobb on Jan 2, 2011 4:59 AM EST up reply actions

Ok..

but in reality Frankie won all but the first.

I'm your huckleberry.

by Brizzle T on Jan 2, 2011 2:49 AM EST up reply actions

I can see how it could be scored that way. It all depends how much stock you put in that late 3rd round TD by Maynard.

"Who's da MASTA?!!!"

by (shonuff) on Jan 2, 2011 2:54 AM EST up reply actions

I think I would’ve scored the third 10-10, Frankie was taking the round imo by a small margin, but Maynard landed the takedown.

by King Koopa on Jan 2, 2011 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

i gave a 10-10, one 10-8 for Gray and the rest for Edgar.

Great fight regardless. Frankie proved that he’s the better fighter, the rematch will show it. I assume thee will be plenty of haters whinning about frankie" running and plenty of bandwagonners jumping on his dick.

If the round is too close, it's 10-10, NOT flip a coin 10-9 or late takedown FTW.

was going to have to win the 5th to get a draw….

it is a draw, maynard won on points but frankie won more rounds. So its a draw.

by JordanMior on Jan 2, 2011 2:04 AM EST reply actions

Looks like Fight Metric scored it about the same way I did

except for the grappling. I had Frankie scoring 4-5 of about 9 TDs and Maynard scoring 1 of about 20 TD attempts. I’ve never really understood Fightmetrics criteria for scoring a TD. I especially have trouble when its from the clinch. Shoots are more obvious usually, but sometimes they’re sorta stuffed and then completed much later…sometimes they get reversed midway through and the guy who didn’t shoot lands on top…tricky to score that sorta thing, but they’re calling it a draw on the grappling and I didn’t see that AT ALL. I saw Frankie stuffing Gray all night long and landing half of his own TD attempts. To me, Frankie won the grappling aspect of the fight hands down.

by (shonuff) on Jan 2, 2011 2:19 AM EST reply actions

….which was a HUGE surprise to me….and I imagine to everyone else, since nearly every fighter they interviewed pre-fight predicted that Gray’s TDs and top control would be the determining factor in the fight and be just too much for Frankie to overcome.

by (shonuff) on Jan 2, 2011 2:21 AM EST up reply actions

FightMetric's results are flawed

Mainly because according to their stats Maynard wins aggregately from the first round alone…

But Edgar wins rounds 2-5.

by unambig on Jan 2, 2011 2:29 AM EST reply actions

not flawed, just based on different criteria

They give a total effectiveness score AND a “10-point must” score, the latter of which agrees with the official decision. The former is based on what I consider a better set of criteria (though I don’t pretend to understand all of it) than the official system of round-by-round scoring, which I think is absurd in any sport. Can you imagine if Baseball games were scored on who won the most innnings instead of who had the most total runs…or worse yet, if Hockey games were scored by individual periods and who ever won 2 of the 3 periods was the winner instead of who scored the most actual goals? Sounds rediculous, doesn’t it! Yet that’s the system we have in MMA. You can literally hit a guy with 300 unanswered shots in 1 round and still lose the fight if he outpoints you by 1 punch in each of the other two rounds…even if that were the only punch landed in those rounds. It’s ludicrous! .

by (shonuff) on Jan 2, 2011 2:38 AM EST up reply actions

True

So in that case it would probably be safe to say Nate Diaz won the fight and lost the 10-point must score system?

by unambig on Jan 2, 2011 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

maybe

If you think Nate did more in the 3rd than Kim did in the previous 2. I’d have to watch it again before I’d call it that way. Generally, I’m inclined to weigh the last round heaviest because it tells you more about the condition both fighters are in after the whole fight. But I’d make an exception in cases involving the Diaz bros…and put more weight on whichever rounds result in them losing. In fact, I think the Unified Rules should contain a clause stipulating that the Diaz Bros are not allowed to win any decision in a fight with an actual human being. They should only be allowed to be judged the winner in fights against creatures of comparable intellegence to their own…such as pond algae and tractor tires.

On the Thug O Meter scale Diaz dropped 15 pts

Nate gest those 15 pts back with a solid finish, then a quick flex to the crowd in his next fight

I always laugh when he flexes

Say what you will about Nate but

In 19 fights he’s been stopped once. One time. And that was in 2006.

Has anyone dominated Nate Diaz? No. Not Guida (split), Maynard (split and probably beat him), Stevenson, and definitely not Kim, who looked close to being done in the third.

And he calls out GSP? Good Christ, Kim would get murdered.

by unambig on Jan 2, 2011 3:27 AM EST up reply actions

Diaz did decent.. not well,

for the last 15-20 seconds. He was beat everywhere up to that point. The fight wasnt even close imo

by unambig on Jan 2, 2011 3:04 AM EST up reply actions

It's hard on the judges

I mean, how do you, in good conscience, score a fight in favor of a guy thinks the “Ten Point Must” system was designed so he wouldn’t have to take his shoes off to tally his score for each round.

my picks were all over the place

enough upsets… but stann came through on my 1 straight bet that made my night

by THORAZINE on Jan 2, 2011 2:55 AM EST reply actions

All i seen was a guy avoid maynard the ENTIRE fight and throw mostly jabs that had little effect. He did a few take downs for points, and did nothing else with them as usual.

Not one time in the entire fight besides the “sort of” submission attempt was frankie even close to finishing gray. IMO edgar is an expert at NOT fighting. Even when frank would land cleen shots it seemed like they had little effect.

by superev1l on Jan 2, 2011 3:12 AM EST reply actions

Although I like Frankie as a fighter

I completely agree with you, if we were going to score this fight like any other, Gray was definitely the aggrssor the whole night and should have won.

by Mesonto on Jan 2, 2011 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

I am a little biased though,i cant stand watching edgar fight, and maynard was only really close to winning once, but gray basicaly chased him around the whole fight

by superev1l on Jan 2, 2011 3:16 AM EST reply actions

No your not biased your out of your fucking mind, Frankie schooled Gray from rounds 2 through 4 the fact that the fight was called a draw was a joke. Almost as big a joke as your post on the matter, yeah Frankie was really trying to avoid Gray when he picked him up and slammed him like a child gtfoh.

If by schooled you mean tapping him in the head and dancing around not trying to finish but fighting purely for decision, then ya i see what you mean.
Hes awesome at not fighting and going for points.
Just like the 2nd BJ fight, frankie had like 9 million takedowns that he did nothing with, just trying to win a decision.

by superev1l on Jan 2, 2011 3:32 AM EST reply actions

I dont think it was "controversial" at all

although the only thing that was WRONG was the 48-46 for Edgar.

Great Fight nonetheless

by Edward E on Jan 2, 2011 3:59 AM EST reply actions

IT was a great fight, cant wait for the rematch

by superev1l on Jan 2, 2011 4:04 AM EST reply actions

This sucks!

pettis deserves his shot. Its not fair Maynard gets rematch because he couldnt beat the champ. Im sorry but a draw means you still didnt beat the champ. Pettis beat the Champ in the WEC. Yeah Maynard won the first round in stunning fasion, but that dosnt mean he deserves an immediate rematch. The fight was a draw meaning he didnt beat the champ so let the next contender in line get his shot, someone who might actualy get the damn job done. this is str8 BS!

Pettis has no chance against Maynard or Edgar

That was an awesome fight, far better than I thought it would be, and definitely should have a rematch.

If there is no rematch, then it finally proves that BJ and Danass are bed buddies because whatever BJ wants, Danass gave it to him.

You call it a great fight and can't wait for a rematch,

yet say you can’t stand Frankie fight, and all he did was chase Maynard around. WTF. Frankie is the smallest guy in the divsion with less power than probably every body he fights. He’s in there with the top guys who have rarely been finished or knocked out and who also posses one punch knockout power, what do you want him to do, go to to toe and get KTFO. These guys have not been finished by bigger and stronger fighters than him, he really does not have much of a choice in how he’s going to get the win. Just like those who winge about how GSP gets his wins, blame his opponents for not being good enough to stop him from taking the fight where he wants it.

by Ade on Jan 4, 2011 5:26 AM EST up reply actions

I'm glad for Frankie there's gonna be a rematch.

Can you imagine how tough it must be for him coming up short against Gray not once but twice? Having Gray out there with and 1-0-1 advantage over the champ and an undefeated record is not good for the ufc. Now Frankie has a third try to get a win against Gray. Hopefully third time will be the charm.

by kden808 on Jan 2, 2011 4:55 AM EST reply actions

Just saw that the Rematch will happen first

It got me thinking that both BJ and Gray have a rematch with Edgar LOL. I think this is the first time that happened.
