For my fellow Non-'Merican Maniacs who may be scratching their heads wondering what the heck MLK Day is ---
MLK Day stands for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
It is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, though the act predated the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by fifteen years.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
Props to: the handy-dandy Wikipedia
Since this is not considered a major holiday, a lot of people do not have the day off, but It was still suggested there be another one of those 'Epic Mania Holiday Open Threads'.
Certainly Jesse is busy finding superb content to post on the front page for the Maniacs...so here is my first fanpost, "cr8'd" in an effort to get things started in order to properly honor MLK Day in a way only the Maniacs can...
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.
The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.
Anyway, it would be cool if we could use this thread to either talk about 'what you are doing for others' or 'what you think we can do to provide solutions for our most pressing national problems' on this MLK Day, or to simply celebrate diversity and civil liberties by sharing links, pics, gifs, videos, quotes and whatever else (within reason) in the comments section below.
I would like to start it off with the pic that accompanies this post. If you have a way to somehow keep it MMA related that would be fantastic, but feel free to put a spin on this holiday in ways only you could possibly dream of, I know you will not let me down with your creative interpretations.
Have at it Maniacs...
