The match-up is being targeted for sometime in the Spring, at either UFC 130, which is tentatively scheduled for May 28 in Las Vegas, or UFC 131, which is rumored for June 11 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
This announcement comes at a time in which Pettis's name is at its highest value. WEC 53 was going to get plenty of publicity just on the strength of it being the final event promoted by the organization. But when Pettis turned the cage into a makeshift Street Fighter stage and landed the Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku against Ben Henderson, winning the lightweight championship in the process, it made him a star.
After all the accolades that come with such impressive innovation, the Duke Roufus product waited for the winner of the previously mentioned Edgar vs Maynard at UFC 125 to unify the two organizations 155-pound belts.
Unfortunately, at least for Pettis, the fight ended in a draw and the big bossman Dana White decided the two needed to rematch immediately to settle the score once and for all.
That left "Showtime" without a date to showcase his skills in the Octagon but his decision to remain active was met with glee from fans and pundits alike. You can bet a certain "Carpenter" feels the same.
Clay Guida, a native of the great state of Illinois, is a longtime veteran of the UFC. In 13 career fights with the organization, he's compiled a solid record of 8-5.
Although he's never competed for the title, or even been in an official number one contender fight, the Greg Jackson fighter is a perennial contender within the division.
He's been on a hell of a run as of late, finishing his last three opponents by way of submission (one due to injury) and taking home two bonus awards for his hard work.
His win over Takanori Gomi at UFC 125 may have convinced a few of the doubters that he's finally ready for a push towards the top of the food chain. Would a victory over Pettis earn him a shot at the winner of Edgar vs. Maynard?
Could Clay Guida be the next contender for the UFC lightweight championship?
