Season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), initially scheduled to feature both middleweights and welterweights, will now feature only 170-pound fighters, according to Heavy.com. The coaches for the popular reality television series are also reportedly set to be announced in the coming week.

With Frank Mir now booked to fight Roy Nelson, that would seemingly nix a previously rumored coaching stint against Brock Lesnar. Chael Sonnen is out indefinitely, so that rules him out. Chris Leben's name was mentioned but he just lost to Brian Stann at UFC 125. Who does that leave, Maniacs? Care to speculate on who the honors will go to?

team jackson vs team blackhouse

basically tristar + grudge + jackson vs nogueira’s + xtriker(?) + nova unio(?)

i don’t think it really is “carwin vs jds”, i think they need to focus away from the “coach vs coach” approach

170? That's lame.

I wanted to see 135rs or something. And know Idea who’s coaching. Ahh Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard in a build up to their next rematch.

This fight for the fish is a fight to the death!

100% agreed

All the talent at 170 is already developed and scooped up so only trash is left for the division. Let them develop regionally. Please help bring in top flight BW and FWs to really help establish the divisions like TUF use to back in the day.

They should just.

Put two guys who aren’t going to fight against eachother on it. They done that before and it was great, but too bad TUF isn’t about the fighters anymore, It’s just a stupid way to hype up a fights and get two guys to either hate eachother more or start to hate eachother.

by guyverbob on Jan 10, 2011 5:42 PM EST reply actions

considering the quality of talent that has come out of TUF lately, the only real profit from this show IS the hype for the coaches fighting.

the only time they should even consider a season where the coaches aren’t fighting is if they some solid fighters in the house, like another comeback season, or a season where guys that are essentially already established (like Roy Nelson) are involved

it just all centers around wrestling. He can bring in Striking coaches to do that and the other parts for him. Let’s be real, there have been some massive failures as TUF coaches.

Coming to mind immediately are Shamrock and Rampage, and Chuck wasn’t any great shakes either as he texted more than he coached.

Brock wasn’t even a technical wrestler back in College. His wrestling game relies on brute trength and natural speed more than slick technique. You can’t really teach the attributes that make Brock a great wrestler, with the exceptions of hard work and lifting weights and eating right. You either have them or you don’t.

I agree

Wandy may be past his prime but he is an awesome person and he would be a great coach and Stann is an american hero and it would be great for his name to do it. Only bad thing about this is there wouldnt be a bad guy.

Wow...

That gives Brock another 9 months off if he is too scared to fight before that.

He fights less than Fedor and Reem. LOL. Okay that was a troll job.

I am going by the interview that Coker gave...

If he announced a tourney with have contracts signed he deserves the shit storm that this will cause…which should cost him his job. If thats the case.

Where did you see that?

I know you aren’t being a dick…I love when people share info that they have.

i read a coker interview on BE,

he says they have petitioned certain commissions but havnt confirmed anything. let me see if i can find it.

ok here it is
When asked about whether or not Alistair Overeem will put the Strikeforce heavyweight title on the line for each tournament bout he’s involved in, Mr. Coker said that there are issues right now regarding uniformity in round and rules structure for the tournament fights. In other words, title fights are five rounds under the Unified rules and most non-title fights are three rounds. Jordan Breen, a proponent of five-round non-title bouts, has noted in the past that a promoter at any time can petition a commission (such as Nevada’s) to get a five round non-title fight sanctioned. Mr. Coker said that when he presented the idea of all the tournament fights being five rounds, he received push back from various athletic commissions on the matter. The big question now is how to have Alistair Overeem in the tournament if his fights are for the title and are five rounds long while everyone else is fighting in three round fights. Mr. Coker stated that his goal is for the tournament winner to be the Strikeforce Heavyweight champion. He also noted that he would like the Josh Barnett/Brett Rogers fight on the same card alongside the Overeem/Werdum fight.

i got even more confused reading it a second time.

by DetroitDrew1980 on Jan 10, 2011 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

Oh...thats not what you said...

Reem is still in the tourney it’s just a matter of each fight that he (or the winner of his last fight) being a title fight.

Thats different that not having Reem in the tourney. He will be and if he doesnt win all of his fights then he shouldnt be the champ anyway. Do you really see a fight with him and say fedor going 25 minutes anyway?

I think of this like the Barnett issue…he has options it’s just not settled on which option.

are you reading my comments? i said "as far as rounds and belt being on the line"

i also said these things needed to be clarified in your thread, and you responded that that have been. i havnt read a single thing that states one way or another if and when the belt is on the line and how many rounds each fight will be. You responded yesterday like you knew the answers to my questions? It sounds to me that coker knows what he wants to do but hasnt confirmed yet if he can?

Yes, I am reading them...
“i just read another article saying that the situation with reem and the tourny isnt confirmed,”

This sounds like Reem hasn’t signed. Thats what I thought you were getting at.

Concerning what this matter:
The interview I read, Coker said that Reem is in it and that each fight that the champion is in will we for the title and 5 rounds. This totally contradicts what he is saying. Still though from what he said why not just have the winne rof the tourney be champ? I guess if Reem loses a decision in a three round fight he can call foul but he can also be gauranteed an instant title shot after the tourney if that happens. Still though, thi is a detail like Barnett. This doesnt sound like a deal breaker at all.

anyway i just want to know an answer. i think coker wants the belt on the line but something i read made it sound like he wanted every fight in the thing to be 5 rounds but the comissions only aloud that for the title fights.

Okay... I very well could be wrong about this...

In fact, its obvious that I am.

I remember when the tourney was first announce I had the same questions and I googles and read many, many articles until i had the answers to these same questions. I will try to find and post the article where Coker said the belt would be on the line in every fight where a title holder is involved and it would be a 5 round fight.

I really wasnt trying to misquote you above, I was just pointing out why i thought you were saying that “reem and the tourney isnt confirmed” . But I see that you are talking about the belt and rounds variation. I will try to find the interview where Coker made it sound like he had that sorted already.

by StrikerDave on Jan 10, 2011 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

It was on ESPN that he said the any fight with the title in it would be 5 rounds and the title would change hands...

Sounds like he is back tracking now.

I am sure they will work this out. It doesnt seem to be an issue of “if” they can work it out…but "how"they are going to work it out.

by StrikerDave on Jan 11, 2011 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

i think he has a plan and 5 rounders is part of it, but he hasnt confirmed it 100%.

Just spit balling here...

Maybe another comeback season would be in order. Maybe in the heavy weight division? It’s be better than watching Mir sleepwalk the octagon for the 100th time, and it might bring some much needed fire back into the division. Either that or FW and BW like everyone else is saying. Like i said just spit balling. It could always totally suck.

Just to clarify...

when i say much needed fire I’m referring to Ufc’s lackluster heavy weight event calender compared to other organizations like strike force. I dont think anyone will disagree that, despite who has the better fighters, strikeforce has set up a much more exciting year.

Agreed

It seems to me they definitely need to bring in some more recognizable names, old or new, rather than relying on 2 or 3 champions/contenders, a couple of washed up relics, and a few slow up and comers. They need to make it a more dog eat dog division like the lightweight division.

Does the UFc have better fighters?

I like Cain but he hasnt defended his belt once? JDS is great. But after that it gets very thin…lots of names but lots of guys that are out of prime. Crocop, Nog, Mir etc.

Fedor, Reem, and barnett seem as good or better than any guys in the UFC…well maybe not as good as Cain.

Just some food for thought.

by StrikerDave on Jan 10, 2011 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

I feel the exact same way

i definitely think fedor, reem, etc.. can at least hold their own and hang with the guys in ufc. Even though a lot of them wont go to the ufc because of contracts or whatever. It just shows there are definitely people that ufc needs to scoop up as soon as possible and save their division. As far as TUF goes, i dont really think they could do a regular heavy weight season since they just had one for season ten and if they do a regular season it needs to be for FW or BW. So maybe a comeback season for the heavy weights is in order.
