BJ Penn next fight in November is 'going to be good' (Video)

A rematch with Takanori Gomi, perhaps?

I think this is way to soon..

I don’t even know if he’ll have enough time to change camps and train properly? Ugh…Him firing the Marinovich Bros has to be the WORST decision he has made in a couple of years and it sure showed in his 2nd fight with Edgar. I saw on Guida’s twitter page that he is gonna fighting someone with a big name and that has alot of power in his hands…I am guessing that Is Gomi since he Ko’d Griffin and not BJ (who still does have heavy hands, but hasn’t KO’d anyone in years with his hands). I have no clue who he’s gonna fight now haha

why did he fire them ?

They prepped him for the diego and kenny fight right ? Im not a penn fan but in those fights he was vicious and fysically he was in much better shape than the edgar fights

Exactly Jake.

If I was a betting man I would never put money on BJ again. The guy is so inconsistent, you never know who shows up that night. His hunger/fire is gone and he will not hold the title again. If he comes into the ring with the intensity that he did with the Edgar fights he’ll continue to rack up losses.

by Adam T. on Sep 10, 2010 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions

He absolutely can hold the belt again.

If Maynard beats Frankie, BJ has a shot.
BJ’s main problems, style-wise, are good wrestlers with decent-enough boxing/standup to keep him guessing and off-guard, thus open to be taken down.
Maynard does not -even though he thinks he does – have good enough boxing to keep BJ guessing enough to catch him unawares with a shot.
I could see BJ vs Maynard going much the same way as BJ vs Sherk, although maybe not quite so lopsided and brutal.

Nah, not buying it.

The BJ that fought Joe Daddy, Kenflo and Diego is not the one that has showed up to the last two fights. He’ll rack up losses quicker than Chuckie baby if he keeps coming in with that look and that intensity. He’s as consistent as an 18 handicap golfer.

by Adam T. on Sep 10, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

The BJ that fought Joe, Kenny and Diego...

is the same Kenny that fought Frankie the first time, I’ll give you that, but not the second. You could tell that BJ gave up during the rematch because he just couldn’t figure Frankie out.
I don’t think that’ll be the case against Maynard though. Maynard doesn’t have the speed and frantic movement that BJ seems to struggle with. Once BJ realises that he can actually hit Maynard, he’ll go in for the kill and likely finish him.

I think in both of the BJ-Edgar fights you can replace Frankie With Gray, and the outcome would be the same.

If Frankie takes BJ down at will, then Maynard sure as hell wouldn’t have a problem with that. And Gray is great at staying out of submissions.

BJ Penn is the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Like usual, my pick was wrong and I blame a certain pudgy Hawaiin for my own short comings when it comes to talent selection. As it stands BZ – 3 Freenow82 – 1.

by freenow82 on Sep 10, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Nah, I don't think so.

Frankie had BJ guessing the whole time with his movement and speed; that’s what made it so easy for him to get the TD. That probably wasn’t the case in the rematch because BJ wasn’t really in the fight at all.
Maynard doesn’t have as good movement or quickness as Frankie to keep BJ offguard like that, meaning BJ will be able to focus more on defending the TD than he would if he was constantly worried about not getting his ass kicked standing.
I could be wrong, but that’s just my take on it.

We all heard all of this crap from BJ before each fight

Similar to hearing anything that Liddell has to offer as well….or Rampage, or you can basically insert any name who is on a downward trend.

Not saying that BJ is headed down that path and I hope that he is not as he is exciting to watch, but he needs to get his head on straight and get committed otherwise it will be the same crap all over again.

What he lacks is mental toughness.

We saw in both the GSP and Frankie rematches that as soon as BJ becomes unable to figure out his opponent, he practically folds and gives up.

I know math is hard.

November is 1month and 21 days from now. BJ fought on the 28th so even from then it will be only 2 months. Where do you get 3.5? Even if you meant he is fighting at the very very end of November it’s less than 3 months from now.

Approx 20 days left this month. Then approx 30 in October. That’s a month and 20 days til November. That’s 2 months shy of your estimate. Close…. Even if we went til Dec.1st that’s still short of your goal by almost a month.

Focus and Motivation

Its can be difficult sometimes to dig and find motivation and drive when what you’re doing is so damn repetitive. Maybe its time to view things from a different perspective. GSP and Rashad say that time off actually helps them in their mental preparation. Man I love BJ…. hope he finds the drive again….. maybe from a different source.

Bj Penn has always been overrated.

He gets run over by just about every top name. Hughes in the rematch, GSP, Frankie Edgar. And he has a loss to Jens Pulver.

Hes garbage and hasn’t evolved since he first started in 2001.

And his wins aren’t even that great. He beat Stevenson. so? Stevenson is a perfect match. Hands of butter and likes the decision.
Ken-Flo? He chokes on big fights.
Sanchez? He then went on to lose too Hathaway.
Sherk? ^ see stevenson.

Does anyone see what I mean? I can’t even see this clown beating Guida.

I want be repulsed by the breakdown and tell you how wrong you are and that you have no clue...

BUT, I can’t. BJ might very well lose to Guida and his accomplishments do lack substance if taken by themselves.

But he still had a great overall career and is indisputably a great JiuJitsu world champion, as well has fought for a very long time and has competed against anyone who was around at the time (Machida anyone?). So he still cool in my book.

I hate BJ...

but as of now, BJ Penn is the greatest LW in the history of the sport. Too bad he had to move to other divisions for a challenge beatdown. It will forever taint his legacy and fuel the fire for idiots who don’t understand what natural talent really is.

What the fuck does that mean to “understand natural talent”? That’s one of the most idiotic things I have heard from you. You have a masters in recognizing that natural talent?

Obviously BJ has god-given talents which made him rise fast as a fighter but it’s also what made him lose at pivotal points because he worked less hard than people with less talent.

easy killer

people point to BJ losing to GSP/Hughes/Machida without understanding that he shouldn’t have fought those guys in the first place. It was his natural talent that allowed him to shirk weight classes and even give competitive fights (mostly) to the two best WW’s in the history of the sport and a former UFC LHW champion with one loss.

I'm not to fond of the natural talent assessment.

We don’t see the hours and hours of hardwork, usually starting at a young age that these guys endure. Granted, some have a better environment or better guidance but the main ingredients to succes are mental toughness and hardwork. I like how everybody says how naturally talented somebody is, makes me chuckle. Don’t mean to brag or bring a pussy sport into it, but I can beat 99.9% of golfers who plays on a regular basis and I play maybe once a month on average now. But that’s because I have muscle memory and knowledge from an insane amount of practice and competition from the age of 14 to 25. Just imagine if it was from age three or four. That’s why I look natural.

by Adam T. on Sep 10, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Slow down Tiger Woods.

Some people undeniably have more god-given talents in a certain area than others. I had to stretch an hour every day since childhood to be able to raise my leg above 90 degrees and be able to touch my feet with my hands standing, because my genes suck in that aspect.

BJ in his childhood:

I agree that hard work is imperative to success, but talent and recognizing for yourself what occupation etc. you might be best suited for is just as important. All the hard work in the world would have not made me able do the things that BJ or Shinya can in terms of flexibility.

BJ Penn is the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Like usual, my pick was wrong and I blame a certain pudgy Hawaiin for my own short comings when it comes to talent selection. As it stands BZ – 3 Freenow82 – 1.

Definitely agree with the examples you gave.

But things can be made up. I truly believe (as long as you’re blessed with good health) that where there’s a will there’s a way. I wake up around 3:30 or 4 in the morning and don’t exactly go to be at 9. Not trying to toot my horn (cause it ain’t big enough to toot) just saying you aren’t born with heart and mental toughness, it’s learned thru guidance and experience.

by Adam T. on Sep 10, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Yet you are not a professional golfer?

because what separates the professional .01% of naturally talented golfers of the world is work ethic, just like MMA. Natural talent alone did not get BJ to the top, that combined with his hard work did. The reason he doesn’t stay on top is his work ethic. But, without the natural talent, he doesn’t even go pro.

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning." - Albert Einstein

by Ulf Murphy on Sep 10, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope. My biggest regret to date although I don't lose any sleep over it

because my life is just as good or better now. Work ethic is not what separates the two Ulf and I know you’re a smart fella. It’s in between the ears. It’s the ability to focus, practice the right way and just think in general. It’s difficult to explain. Why do most people avoid pressure situations or choke in them while others excel and thrive on them (a small%). You can’t explain that, it’s internal and something you have to develop. You can’t practice it, read it or be taught it for the most part.

by Adam T. on Sep 10, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Valid point, but you can’t deny that there is such a thing as natural talent or aptitude. Don’t Lebron James and Stephen Strasburg have more talent than the average player in their respective leagues? Or if you want to take the “hard work” angle out of it, how about Maurice Clarett and JaMarcus Russell. It’s safe to say they are not the most disciplined, hardest-working fellows around. But damn, talk about raw natural talent.
