Nate Marquardt: 'I'm not letting Rousimar Palhares catch me in any submission'
Props: MMA Nation
Quoteworthy:
"That's his style. He likes to work those submissions. But I'm ready to defend those submissions with everything I have. I'm not letting him catch me in anything. I heard he's working very hard on his wrestling. I'm expecting him to be a great wrestler when it comes to his takedowns. If he shows up with anything less than that it'll be an easy night. But if he shows up with good takedowns I'll be able to display that I have good takedown defense. I'll have him on the bottom if he pulls guard or whatever and be able to work my ground and pound from there. But who knows? He could be a completely different fighter when I fight him... Not looking past Palhares, but winning this fight I'm gonna want a top guy. My goal is to get a title shot. I think I'm gonna have to beat one of those guys [Belfort or Okami] or maybe a Wanderlei Silva to get that shot."
With just one week to go until UFC Fight Night 22 goes down from Austin, Texas, one part of the show's main event made his claim as to why he'll walk away the victor. Nate Marquardt was just one win away, against Chael Sonnen at UFC 109, of earning himself another title shot. Now he has to work his way back up. The first man he'll have to defeat is Rousimar Palhares, a submission specialist who's coming off back-to-back victories via heel hook. It'll be no easy task to get by "Toquinho," but if he does, "The Great" is eyeing a top 185-pounder to jump right back in the title mix. Let's get some predictions on the UFC Fight Night 22 main event.

Roster-bar Paul Harris will catch Nate eventually. maybe late sub in 2 or 3.

Idk why but I want Nate to lose, unless he finishes the fight with some sick combo. And he says he’s not lookin past him but its sounds like he is.

Exactly what I was thinking.
“Not looking past Palhares, but winning this fight I’m gonna want a top guy.”
Ugh, by definition, that’s exactly what you are doing.
Nate's loss to Chael doesnt mean anything in rankings if you ask me
it just showed where Chael was at
Nate got manhandled by Chael for 3 rounds…but so did Anderson Silva! If Silva/Sonnen was a 3 rd fight it would have been 30-27 Sonnen.
I'm gonna go home, watch DirecTV, drink bud light and ride my Harley Davidson!!
only if you take the first 3 rounds of that fight.
Who is to say that it wouldn’t be like rounds 1,2,5? Obviously Silva would be looking for that submission earlier and with more energy.
BJ Penn is the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Like usual, my pick was wrong and I blame a certain pudgy Hawaiin for my own short comings when it comes to talent selection. As it stands BZ – 3 Freenow82 – 1.
He was looking for the sub earlier with more energy in the last fight,
but he didn’t get it.

Hendo was landing massive shots on Paul and he couldn't do it.
I think Paul harris will ride him for three rounds to get a solid UD.

Dan the man
landed a few clean shots but his hardest was a right hand to a downed Paul harris. Even then it was such a wild punch it didn’t have the power it should have and it came at the very end of the fight.

i want to see Palhares vs Maia...it would be an interesting fight!!
and Marquardt vs Belfort would be awesome
Yeah who knows, they both have amazing technique but Rousimar is SO much stronger.
by PetrozellisJab on Sep 8, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Why?
Maia has better standup, has more MMA experience against better opponents, and has a more accomplished grappling background. Palhares has more muscles, that’s about it.
Nate will be well prepared and ready to prove where he belongs
I expect a ten hit combo tko a la Gouveia (or however you spell it.)
yeah but today Im confused by it
At the time – it was fantastic. But then Willy G went on a huge slide. And though not intentional, I am forced to reconsider how awesome it was. Willy G just looked brutal… so it loses it’s luster for me.
Im a big Nate Fan… but He see Rousimar creating problems. But I will be rooting for the Great One.
Vitor is coming. Somebody better polish up that MW belt.
Okami = Lindland & Franklin
I keep seeing theses BJJ guys that don't understand basic wrestling TD's. Aoki, Maia, Hazelett, etc, etc, etc.
All Nate has to do to win this fight is not get taken down. After training with Carwin and Shad at Grudge, I think Nate will be fine.

i never saw the rousimar v henderson fight... so this one is tough for me to pick.
I could see Nate planning his next move 3 moves ahead of Palhares and than Sssssssssinch… it’s in. He tapped. It’s ALLLLL OVVVERRRR!

I never saw the henderson fight either, wioll prolly watch before weekend

Hendo cracked Palharaes with so many right hands..
I have no clue how that dude didn’t go out, he has a great chin. But he got destroyed, Hendo sprawled every TD attempt, made him stand up and wooped his ass.

So are Jake Shields takedowns that good or are Paul Harris's takedowns that bad?

Hard to say
Palhares has really really shitty stand up; or had in that fight anyway, even worse than shields, all his shots were doubles from the outside; Hendo just sprawled and then cracked him on the jaw most the time. He did slam Hendo once pretty good and had a decent knee bar attempt.

they’re different. Paul Harris has a more explosive doubl-leg than Shields, but his set-ups are not very polished. Shields has a long wrestling background and while he doesn’t have a super-double-leg, he has the ability to transition into different styles of TDs as soon as one gets stuffed. Rousimar DID end up getting him down eventually.
Anderson Silva will fall via brutal Republican dry-humping.
Here's the fight

Rousimar has great takedowns
His double-leg is quick and he’s strong enough to slam someone off a single-leg.
Plus, he’s fucking relentless. He’ll get the takedown eventually.

Nate "The Great" WAR-Quardt will take this one in the second!
I think he’s quick and strong enough to avoid/escape Palhares’ grip!

is a freak, dont be surpized if he wins this fight. Remember how we all thought Nate was going to run through Chael. This is going to be a tough fight for Nate, I wont be shocked if he loses.
palhares’ wrestling won’t be so decisive, Nate will play it safe ala Jackson’s smart plan to get him back to a shot away from the belt, though I feel Marquardt still hastn’t totally recovered from his drubbing by Sonnen (damn he beat him up and dominated him).
palhares looks terrible when he doesn’t get the guy down…and Marquardt’s frame will let him sprawl palhares down who desperately clings toa single leg for part of the beginning of each round, then he’ll have to get up, fake like he wants to stand long enough to shoot a far out double again or a far out single again…and nate will punish him from top position/spraw.
boring and predictable fght unless Nate blows it and lets palhares get to sidemount/sweep/attack the leg.
