Punch drunk: KJ Noons willing to stand and trade with Manny Pacquiao in MMA fight

Noons-pacqiao_medium

Props: Fight Hype

Quoteworthy:

"I would love to welcome Pacquiao into MMA. It would be an ideal situation for him because I don't take guys down to the ground, and after that's all said and done in the cage, I would be willing to step inside of the ring with him too, something we all knew Randy Couture wouldn't do with James Toney. I know Floyd (Mayweather) isn't looking to do MMA, but I would still be willing to fight Mayweather and Pacquiao in a boxing match and both camps have been reached, so we will see what happens. I will put it this way, both camps have been reached and both camps were very interested."

Just a few weeks before his rematch with Nick Diaz in San Jose, former Elite XC Lightweight Champion and current Strikeforce attraction KJ Noons lets it be known that he wants to be atop the very short list of professional fighters willing to throw hands with puissant pugilist Manny Pacquiao, who's been floating the idea of dabbling in mixed martial arts in between boxing mega-fights. Unfortunately the likelihood of ever seeing "Pac-Man" inside a cage is slim to none, but just to be safe, "King Karl" is also calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr. Is Noons just grabbing headlines? Or does his recent run in "the sweet science" put him in a position to challenge boxing's greatest fighters?

I would LOVE to see KJ get tooled by Manny or Mayweather.

Please let this happen and embarrass Noons to the fullest extent by whooping his ass in boxing and a standup MMA fight.

I AM SOMETIMES BIASED - Get over it!!!!!!!

No...

I hope this never happens.. Noons doesn’t deserve the exposure or the $$ as a result of one of those match ups. Fuck Noons.

I would take Noons in the standup if it's an MMA fight.

He would just stand on the outside and leg kick him for half a round until he’s crippled with no power in his legs. People need to realize that’s how you beat boxers in MMA or in kickboxing – they don’t the have the technical know-how or the shin conditioning for it. It’s actually comical to watch them limping around and ass out skipping to avoid getting hit.

As far as straight up boxing, Noons isn’t good even by regional standards. Still WAR KJ.

Manny has a chance

He has MT experience, and KJ isn’t a great kicker. And it’s possible to win a stand-up battle with just mainly your hands, which Manny’s are much better than KJ’s. Here are some good videos of better boxing beating more well-rounded strikers:

A 40+, fat, slow James Toney is not a good representation of a world class boxer. I’d like to see the younger guys that are still actually competitive crossover into MMA. Mayorga/Thomas would have been ok, not much better than Toney though. Pacquiao or Mayweather will never do it though.

I agree 100%!!!

I would love to see a prime boxer do it. Just learn some take down defense and go from there. The problem with Floyd of Manny is that they get paid way to much to make the switch over to MMA. Maybe for one fight, but then I doubt they bother to learn any other aspect besides boxing. Imagine a pro boxer with great wrestling or jj?

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

It would cost them 20 million to get PAC or manny to fight mma.

That is more than Dana pays all his fighters in an entire year. Only washed up bums will fight mma.

by Conan the Barbarian on Sep 9, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Come on Mousashi was washed up as hell

and it’s not like Mousasi was a one dimensional boxer. The fact that he trains in the holland kickboxing gyms means that he knows at least what to do in there. The Rampage Abadi fight was more legit and a big upset but abidi’s career is just full of up and downs like that.

keep hands up when u kick

First thing I was told 20 years ago when starting Karate was to keep my hands up anytime I threw a kick. This was drilled into our heads. I see fighters drop their hands when kicking all the time to get more tork or twist into a kick but it is stupid. Keep the hands up when you kick and no boxer will ever touch you. I have always kicked pure boxers around the ring. When you have both arms and hands for pure defense and only throw kicks and never drop your guard is is really hard for someone to punch you. Only guy I see doing this though is Machida.

by hatteras on Sep 8, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

this......

what’s even more frustrating is seeing how guys deep dropping their hands yet the other “boxer” doesn’t throw while accepting that the kick will land. Am looking at BJ and Rampage.

I’d like to know where Boxing ends n MMA begins…. Make it an MMA bout…. without the ground game or takedowns….. I think KJ would win with clinch, dirty boxing, elbows and knees to the head… down goes pacman and gayweather.. I WANNA SEE IT!!!!!!

Because KJ would get his a$$ handed to him if he stood with either of these guys, and I like the idea of seeing him getting KO’d. From an MMA perspective, having Manny fight would be huge, even if he won.

On a side note, what the hell is KJ thinking? Has he forgotten he got KO’d by Krazy Horse? What chance would he have standing with Manny P…

Why are these MMA fighters all the sudden comming out and wanting to fight boxers..

It doesn’t make much sense to me. If your an MMA fighter, you should only direct your time and energy to YOUR sport. MMA. If you are in MMA or Boxing, you should want to fight the baddest and the greatest in your sport. Not jump tracks to fight someone who is NOT the best in your sport. Its almost like some of these MMA fighters, or Boxers towards MMA fighters, are trying to prey on less experienced people (in their sport) to better their career. Boxing is boxing. MMA is MMA. Although they have very similar components and foundations… THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. Just because Soccer and Football is very similar. You dont see (american) football players calling on soccer players to come to their sport, and “show them whats up” They are two different sports, they should stay separate.. And they should respect the differences.

no

I hate the mma fanboys that would in this case pick the MMA fighter just because over a super skilled boxer in a boxing match.

Crazy KJ

at least he’s getting attention, I guess. But what a dumb thing to say, UFC wouldn’t even be able to pay Manny enough, much less Strikeforce. I hope KJ gets a shot against Gil Melendez soon, he is need of some humbling. Outstiking Conor Huen and then Gurgel and he thinks he’s some elite top level guy now. I think Thompson or Melendez beat him easily.

I predict that Manny or Gayweather will never try MMA even if their camps are interested. I could see Manny doing it before Mayweather, but even then it will fall apart just like talks between the boxers fighting. In the end no company is gonna pay either boxer the $$$ they would ask for.

Hell no KJ won't beat Diaz; since that fight Diaz has gone 7 straight wins, all stoppages

KJ’s been screwin around, and he still wants to screw around with boxing.

I took a look at it; haven’t had a chance to work on the Cote sign yet, I’m usually here arguin with someone or alt tabbing back n forth between this site and a couple spread sheets.

KJ is just too good a striker for Diaz. Diaz is number 3 or 4 in my list of faves...

But this isn’t a good match up for him. Noons td is too good. And Noons like to walk forward and take a shot to give 3. Diaz won’t have an answer for someone that stalks in like that.

No rush on the Cote pic, I just thought it would make a great profile picture.

I agree that KJ is being underestimated

But if you watch the first fight you can see that Diaz was the one stalking Noons.

Noons’ standup was successful because he knew how to avoid Diaz’s high volume pitter patter punches, was able to counter with a couple well timed big shots, and also attacked the body, which is vulnerable with Diaz’s style.

by Mint on Sep 8, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He can’t take him down, KJ’s striking is way better, yeah so of course Diaz will win. Wait, logic?

Diaz-Noons was fought at 160, not 155

And Diaz was fine fighting at 160 against Gomi earlier in the year.

Besides, what part of that performance could be blamed on dehydration? Diaz moved and punched exactly like he did at 180 against Scott Smith.

by Mint on Sep 8, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I've got an idea, KJ.

How about instead of “contacting” Manyy and Mayweather trying to set up fights with them, you focus on the one at hand. Why is he even talking about these when he needs to focus on Diaz? He didn’t want to have the rematch the first time when he was the champ cuz he didn’t feel like he was being paid or promoted as champion. Now he gets the chance to take that spotlight back and promote himself as much as the fight and he is spending time talking about boxing matches? If he wants the payday against those guys, he would be better served focusing on the WW belt so he can then propose a “champion of one sport vs. the other.”

Weed only makes you unmotivated and lazy if you are sitting around.

I know people who smoke tons but do sports constantly and lead a very active lifestyle. Weed just accelerates/enhanced any behavior pattern. So if you smoke and are training, it will make your training even better and more enjoyable.

How can you really tell about Diaz' boxing

He’s faced pretty substandard competition since fighting Noons, particularly when it comes to boxing. His boxing looked about the same to me vs. Noons as he did against Smith or Zaromskis, with the difference being that Noons knows how to deal with Diaz’s pitter patter style.

by Mint on Sep 8, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

KJ would smash either one in an MMA/K1 striking bout

Hes by far a superior striker then either one could ever be, in a boxing match though he would definitely lose to PAc-man and maybe MAYBE to Mayweather. Id love to see both happen of course would be real interesting to see how fast he KO’s them both in mma and how fast he himself gets KO’d in boxing lol!

If you dont like drugs then dont do them.....give them to me!

If you think KJ

would have a snowballs chance in hell of being even remotely competitive with Mayweather in a boxing match, you are wrong. i don’t even like Mayweather, but his skill is undenyable. KJ lost a unan decision to this guy : James Countryman. Someone who wouldn’t even be qualified as a sparring partner for Mayweather. Did you see Ricky Hatton vs Mayweather? It would be like that but only 2 rounds.

Way to Step Up KJ...

He’d beat Manny in an MMA bout, but lose in boxing for sure. If it were MMA, Manny wouldn’t know what to do with all the kicks and knees coming his way.

Shogun's knee will explode for the final time when Rashad shoots for the takedown.

Lets get real

If this was an MMA fight, KJ would crush Manny. Even though KJ’s ground game isn’t spectacular, he’s at least experienced with it. Manny’s never been on his back or in a guard, so he would have no clue, much like James Toney, of what to do. I doubt this fight will ever happen, but its a good buzz generator.

I think boxing is helping his MMA

His takedown defense and ground escapes are pretty good.

He’s one of the few good MMA fighters that don’t need to go to the ground, like a mini Alves. Like Alves, though, he’ll have trouble with the best wrestlers like Melendez. Fortunately for him, Diaz isn’t one of them.
