10-08-28 BJ Penn exposed for the 7th time!!!!

I think Kos has the potential to be the most competitive fight he's had

He’s always had a set gameplan to deal with a striker or wrestler, Fitch, Alves and Hardy might be better at one discipline or another then Kos but none are imo as well rounded as Kos. I still think GSP is a little bit better in every area, but Kos will give him a good fight.

Also can’t really argue with this, after the Penn fight and the Silva fight, who can really be considered a better technical fighter than GSP?

there are plenty of guys out there who are better bjj guys than GSP and better strikers too.

No one puts it all together as well as Georges does

Being better in one area does not make you a better technical mma practitioner. A. Silva has some serious work to do on his wrestling.

He does not use his tools as well as GSP does

He does not mix it up like Georges and move from striking to wrestling to submission back to striking again etc.. He can be better at everything if he wants, but he still doesn’t put it all together as well as GSP does in an MMA fight.

gsp mixes it up the same in every fight, i don't understand? everybody knows what he is going to do.

He fights the same in every fight. It’s just that he’s so strong and explosive that his takedown is impossible to stop.

excactly, "mixes it up" is something people say to make him seem like he fights everywhere.

After a couple take-downs his opponents are out of the fight, so he can strike or do whatever the fuck he wants. You guys make it seem like he is such a great striker, he is average.

And an ELITE MMA fighter that is probably the best technical MMA fighter there is. A. Silva can be better at Jits and striking, GSP is better at MMA.

If wrestling was all he had he’d have been beaten long ago. He’s got all the skills, he submitted Matt Hughes, who is an awesome grappler in his own right. Fitch gets in with Georges and gets destroyed, standing and on the ground. If all GSP had was wrestling he wouldn’t be able to rely on his other tools and he is able to.

Maybe

But gsp never has any intentions of putting on an exciting fight he just wants a win so he can talk about how good he is. And most skilled in the world? No. Division yes. But I find it pretty cocky especially with guys like Anderson, jose Aldo, shogun and other guys like that out there. If e was really confident in his SKILL he would have no worries fighting at 185 and proving it against silva right?

Aldo is only 2 fights into his title reign, not sure why you guys do this but you see someone (ie. Machida) and 3 fights into their carreer everyone’s like “OMG He’s the greatest ever!!”. Come back with that argument after Aldo has as many title defenses as GSP has; Anderson just got his ass kicked for 4 rds; something no one has ever done to GSP. Shogun hasn’t even defended the belt ONCE. Come up with some better examples.

Right now, today, as of present GSP is the best P4P fighter in the world. Fedor Lost, Penn Lost, A. Silva got his ass kicked for 20 mins showing his wrestling deficiency before locking in a miracle sub; Lesnar hasn’t had the time, Aldo hasn’t had the time yet to make those claims on him. I don’t even know how this is an argument, right now he’s a dominant champ and every other guy mentioned has looked like crap lately.

So?

Hughes never beat the shit ou of gsp? And Anderson gets a bad rap for winnin after being mauled for 4 rounds yet GSP eta finish in the first buy a midget and he still the best? And shogun is in a division with MUCH more legitimate talent I don’t really think any fighter would be super dominant of

by soupdz28 on Sep 8, 2010 1:05 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

No, Hughes never beat the shit out of GSP.

He submitted him at the end of a round he was losing on the judges scorecards. So no, he didn’t.

And Anderson gets a “bad rap” as you put it because was on his way to losing a lopsided decision before pulling out the submission. While he won by stoppage, it was still a much less decisive and dominant victory than GSP winning by decision against Hardy, Alves or Fitch.

I don't argue that gsp is GREAT

I just think lately his attitude has made him a piece of shit. Anderson fought with a damaged rib, no way in hell would GSP do that he doesn’t take any risks to a point that he is committed to putting on fights that are brin as log a he wins. Also you hardly hear anyone else who is worthy of P4P talk about how how amazing they are, everyone else does it for them. I dunno the guy just rubs me the wrong way only taking a few fights a year and on home turf and such. He gets babied IMO since he I Dana’s big market into Canada, and I title defenses are what important with the rua case then silva ahits on GSP’s face

You must forget that GSP tore his groin in the fight against Alves and never let up.

And I can’t believe that someone prefers Silva over GSP because of GSP’s attitude. That’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read on this site.

It’s funny cause either GSP is too robotic and should shit talk more, or now he’s too cocky and should shut his mouth. The guy really can’t win with some people. I can’t believe Rua is even in the talks. Let the guy have some title defenses first to wash away the memories of Forrest putting it to him and the Coleman fight.

The ridiculous excuses for not liking him are a testament to how good GSP is.

Since the standard reasons for hating can’t be applied to him (showing vulnerability in fights, facing lesser competition, disrespecting opponents), people who hate him need to come up with ridiculous “explanations” for why they do.

No no no

I don’t prefer anderson’s attitude to GSP’s just think GSP is a boring fighter and shouldn’t act like he is god’s gift to mma I think Anderson is a cocky prick too lol. And second he tore his abductor muscle DURING the fight so of course he kept going. If he had done it prior I guarantee he would have backed out. I’m just getting really really tired of paying to see wrestling matches so I’d much rather pay to see Anderson than gsp. You can not even watch his fights and know pretty much exactly what happens.

by soupdz28 on Sep 8, 2010 1:22 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I know what happens in Silva fights when his opponent's don't do exactly as he wants, he dances around like a friggin' fairy.

And you’re not Ms. Cleo so you can’t guarantee what GSP or Silva would do before a fight. And I rarely see GSP pump himself up, let alone act like God’s gift to MMA.

I agree with soup!

Silva danced how many times? And how many sick fights and highlight finishes does he have? Exactly! You know exactly what GSP is going to do every fight and to me it’s boring as all hell. It’s wrestling with some ground and pound. Silva lighting people up is def more exciting! And if you can get Silva on his back, he will still finish you. GSP dominates and always has top position, yet still can’t finish. It’s almost comical.

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

GSP best p4p?

He is almost bigger than all of his opponents and doesn’t even finish them. Silva goes up a weight class (20 lbs) and destroys the ex champ amongst others. While GSP can’t go up 15 lbs and take on tougher competition. Kinda sad and annoying as a fan. Wouldn’t his fans rather see him test himself? He doesn’t care what they want, only to keep winning at 170.

3 sub attempts? bjj experts have 3 attempts in 1 round and would certainly finish someone like Hardy.

GSP is extremely systematic, his transitions are the same in every fight and he never does anything significant with it, it’s just back to guard and same story all over again.. 3 mount positions and no finish? extremely bad, any real GnP’er KO’s his opponent from there.

GSP inflicts little to no damage with his transitions and alleged GnP. He goes takedown – side mount – other side -back to guard, then the same thing counter clockwise. That’s how he mixes it up.

If A. Silva hadn't gotten completely owned for 4 rds

If BJ Penn hadn’t gotten beat by Frank Edgar twice, you might have an argument; but right now GSP is the best all round MMA practitioner in the game. He’s the most well rounded champion there is. Silva can’t defend wrestling; Sonnen kicked the shit out of him for 4 rds. When’s the last time someone dominated GSP for 20 minutes? WHEN?!?! Matt Serra got a flash ko. Ok..

Didn’t Chonan get a killer sub on A. Silva? Didn’t Takase tap him with a triangle? So lets not act like he never got caught. GSP has NEVER gotten his ass wooped by ANYONE for 20 fucking minutes in ANY fight period. Give it up; he can strike if he wants to, he wrestles cause it’s his dominant strength but he can submit too (see Matt Hughes); he is the most well rounded MMA fighter in the game today. period, it’s not an argument, you ARE wrong.

It's pretty damn obvious to me and most fans.

That the rules inside the octagon and the way judges score is made for wrestlers to shine and dominate. So you coming out now after so long time when that whole discussion about wrestler’s boring fans asses off is surprising. GSP is just like Jon Fitch and Randy Couture at the end of the day, he gets his takedowns and he grinds his opponents into meat for the duration of the bout !

Zlatan Ibrahimovic !

by RoBerto. on Sep 7, 2010 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

O hot damn.... so what you're saying is that getting takedowns is to you being the best and most complete MMA fighter?

GSP is the best MMA wrestler period ! so how could he possibly be “dominated” as you call it for 20 mins in the octagon with the safe first style he himself admits to having? He puts everyone of his opponents on their ass in every round and he repeats it for the entire fight in all of his fights. He is the master of positional wrestling and performing shutouts by controlling other mens bodies, added with some guard passing and a couple lazy sub attempts. His striking is getting more a pure set up for the takedown/wrestling, he only throws jabs, 1-2’s and single strikes.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic !

by RoBerto. on Sep 7, 2010 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

the truth is , you don't have to be the best and most complete fighter to win fights.

GSP is no more complete than other fighters and he is not the most talented MMA fighter.. His strong side is just that much better than the rest and that strong side is made to control and shut his opponent down which is exactly what he does. He’s fought guys that are more talented strikers , bjj fighters but he “chokes” their skills by controlling them like any other wrestler does and like Sonnen did to Anderson Silva who is a million times more talented than hardworking Sonnen.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic !

by RoBerto. on Sep 7, 2010 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

You don't make much sense

He beats every wrestler, every striker, every BJJ practitioner he goes up against and he’s not well rounded? If he was as 1 dimensional as you claim he’d have been beaten; someone would’ve laid the gameplan down to beat his ass already. The problem is that when they get in there they don’t know if they’re getting punched in the face or taken to the ground. By the 3rd rd these guys have no clue what’s coming next and as a result they can’t stop the TD. That’s a product of a well rounded gameplan and fighter implimenting and executing with elite technical ability.

I posted that...

But the point I was trying to make is that GSP doenst have the killer instinct to finish guys anymore. Aside from Penn who quit, GSP hasnt had a ref stoppage in 2 1/2 years (Apr 2008) With the dominant fighter he is, there is no excuse why he isnt finishing guys, he’s playing too safe and people are starting to recognize that

by Man_Made_God on Sep 8, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would you discount the BJ Penn stoppage as though it were irrelevant?

You make it sound as though BJ just decided not to keep fighting. The fact is he quit so he wouldn’t sustain potentially career ending injuries. If he was fighting a guy who

doenst have the killer instinct to finish guys anymore
he wouldn’t have had to worry about that.

sonnen is a much stronger version of gsp...sonnen was able to take down silva at will

and silva is 10 times faster than gsp…much better striker…and sonnen is much stronger and bigger than gsp….he could easily stuff gsp’s shots and hold him down for 15 mins for a victory

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

No one is good enough to get up from under him either

What do you want him to do Rob? Give up the TD to prove to you he can strike? He striked to set up the TD in the first place. The reason 80% of the fight takes place on the ground is cause it’s a difficult position to recover from. It’s not easy to escape off your back or reverse, why does he have to give up a dominant position??

You're wrong. GSP is a great striker. He doesn't have the power...

Or he just doesn’t commit to get the finish standing. But his a tecnhique is superb.

I think he has power. He’s knocked down almost every person he’s fought including Fitch, Hughes and Alves who all have great chins. He doesn’t have Carwin punch power, but I don’t think he’s a pillow fist either.

You say he fights the same every fight

He does EVERYTHING every fight; sure there’s more wrestling than anything else cause once he gets the TD they can’t get out from under him. That TD is set up by good striking, it’s also followed by transitions, GnP and sub attempts, the man uses EVERYTHING that MMA has to offer.

doesn't mean he's better in those areas than other fighters, cause he's not.

He’s a great explosive wrestler first and foremost with trouble of finishing fights.. If he was the best technical fighter he’d submit all of his opponents kinda like Anderson Silva does, that man is all technique and CLEARLY a bigger talent than Georges is when it comes to fighting, just not wrestling.

GSP is the better wrestler, but Silva is much better at EVERYTHING else!!!

It’s just that wrestling is the most important discipline to have! I think KOS will give him the best fight he has had since Hughes/GSP 1.

While it may not be a martial art, cardio is just as important as technical skill.

And that’s an area that GSP dominates Silva. Plus, arguning that Silva is “much better” than GSP at BJJ is kinda ridiculous when he’s been submitted more and has the same number of submission victories.

What's your point?

Silva was dominated by Sonnen just a few weeks ago. When’s the last time you’ve seen anyone dominate GSP? Never! Silva may have pulled out the submission when Sonnen got complacent, but many people are taking Chael in the rematch. You think many people would pick Hardy, Alves, Fitch or BJ in a rematch with GSP? Despite your sig, dominating the entirety of a fight is a much more decisive way to win than to pull a submission out of your ass when you’re getting destroyed.

GSP has better wrestling and BJJ. Also I think he is a more effective striker right now. I am not talking about the past because that is irrelevant. Right now GSP is the best and proves it. BJ Penn is the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Like usual, my pick was wrong and I blame a certain pudgy Hawaiin for my own short comings when it comes to talent selection. As it stands BZ – 3 Freenow82 – 1.

I wouldn’t consider a Brown-belt BJJ and training with Eddie Bravo and Serra (not for long though) as ‘0 ground game’

I think Kos has a good shot

at pulling out an upset. Heavy handed and will not take GSPs wrestling lightly this time around.
How does everyone figure GSP will approach this fight?
Try and keep it standing and pick Kos apart or put him on his back and work him over?

Same gameplan as always

He’ll mix it all up, by the 3rd rd Kos won’t know if a TD is coming or if hands are about to be thrown. I do agree that this is a much tougher fight for GSP then ppl are giving it credit for. I think Kos could give him a run for his money.

hahahahaha I started laughing so hard, I couldn’t finish reading the rest of the sentence. GSP will take Kos down and hold him there for 5 rounds, end of story. Although GSP fans here will prolly try to make it seem like the fight will be competitive, so that they can then marvel at how good GSP is at “controlling his opponents” and pretend like they didn’t know exactly how the fight would go.

Dude,

did you not see him fight Fitch? He used his wrestling to keep it standing. I’m not so sure that he will be able to control Kos like he did the first time around. That was the first time we really saw him use his wrestling to dominate and I believe Kos that it caught him off guard and he didn’t train properly for that kind of fight. Properly focused I think he could stuff GSPs shot.

Kos can definitely win its alot closer then what people think

A shitload closer. Gsp is the man no doubt about it skill wise hes correct hes top dog with that said Koscheck can definitely come out on top he has good power in his hands good hand speed his striking has improved soo so much since they fought and now hes able to mix it up alot better. As long as Kos comes into this fight with the ‘im not a retard plan’ he should have a great shot at getting the W.

Btw ‘im not a retard plan’ is fighting your fight not GSP’s for some unknown reason everyone has been fighting GSP’s fight which is moving foward like a retard trying to engage in a standup fight which GSP wants absolutely no part of which results in you on your ass because people moving foward are alot easier to takedown then those moving back or even standing their ground.

So the butt scoop is the best strategy against GSP?

The guys fighting GSP should run backwards? Maybe a better strategy would be for them to jump out the octogon the second they can.

I think it's the old boxing rhetoric, brawl a boxer, box a brawler

The first guy that can get in there and turn the fight into an untechnical brawl can find a way to beat GSP.

Won't be a punch, but a knee, IMO. Think KJ Noons on Nick Diaz.

Someone needs to catch him coming in with the shot. Will it happen? Doubtful, since T Alves didn’t even really try to kick with his vaunted muay thai, Kos and Fitch don’t have that kind of aggression, and no one else at WW is even on the same level as those three.

It will take some kind of DW magic to create a challenger for GSP after Kos.

Well Kos does have the potential to fight off the TD

MAYBE, and it’s a BIG MAYBE, he can fend off that TD or get back to his feet; if he can do that, he can start swinging away and try to turn that fight into a brawl. Now that’s a lot of ifs, and do I think that’s how it’s gonna go down? No; but I do think that Kos will be a handful for GSP and a much tougher opponent then the majority of posters here seem to give him credit.

sigh..this is gonna be a long few months till the fights..

kos has a really big mouth..and he is skilled to back it up..BUT..he is gonna underestimate gsp AGAIN..and maybe…just maybe..he will shock us all and kick kos’s ass standing…but, we all know that the plan will be for a safe win..and we’ll all hear about how shit he is for not taking risks…well it all sounds well and good from our place..(behind the key board) but he will be the one working his ass off and training his ass off and still having the belt and walking away with the $$..
though i’m sure kos is gonna be a good coach for tuf..i really hope that he does not run his mouth too much..which is impossible..sigh..maybe he can teach his fighters the acting skills he uses in the octagon too!! lol

I don't like the belts being held up either.

But we can’t argue that TUF has been the avenue for some of todays great fighters to come in to their own and MMA is better for it. So I just ignore the show (i still watch the fights online the next day) and hope for great talent to emerge.

yep tuf has run it's course..

but i have to admit i am curious at how gsp and kos will do as coaches and such..if there are not many antics and more focused on the training and fights i will be stoked..i’m such a nerd i have seen all seasons of tuf..even when they sucked (which has been most of em since the 2nd season) i watch cuz maybe i will see some one who is the next best thing..

by sarah- on Sep 7, 2010 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I still like TUF

it’s pretty bad, but still better than Contender was. It’s a great way to humanize the fighters and has given us some good and decent fighters that we actually know something about.

And really how much has

it held up the belts? GSP will still fight twice this year, just like every year. Now, I do wish we could step it up and get another fight in for the Champs, but it seems to be holding steady at two fights a year.

It's lame

And I think it’s because either they hold up the belt and throw a Champ into the show or they hold up the belt and throw a #1 contender fight into the show. You know who could coach the damn show? Mark Coleman and Chuck Liddell; two popular legends who aren’t gonna hold up a belt.

Heath tried to do an outside leg trip during their fight… only for Machida to land on top of him anyway. In contrast, see Machida’s beautiful, lightning-quick outside leg trip on Thiago Silva.

You people are crazy.

First of all. GSP is the best P4P in the world.

GSP works on the ground, attempts submissions, and tries to finish, Just because he isn’t finishing doesn’t mean it’s Lay N’ praying. See Jon Fitch for Lay N’ Pray.

GSP stand-up is average. I can guarantee you he will not be standing with Koscheck in there next fight.

Anderson silva better then GSP? As fucking if. Think what Chael Sonnen did to him. Not add more explosiveness, better takedowns, better transitions, submission defence, and offence. There might of not been a finish but I can assure you Silva wouldn’t of won.

I’m not a huge GSP fan, but even Helen Keller can see that he is easily the best.

Riding the Brock Train..
Jon Fitch, Gray Maynard and Chael Sonnen can suck it. If I want a blanket I'll buy it in the store, not on PPV.
GSP and Rashad are getting close to joining this list.
