Damn Dawg: Cro Cop, Nogueira, Sherk and Serra still the underdogs for UFC 119 on Sept. 25

UFC 119 odds

Tough week for the veterans.

Despite being a combined 89-20, Mirko Filipovic, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Sean Sherk and Matt Serra are all currently underdogs heading into the UFC 119 pay-per-view on Sept. 25 in Indianapolis.

Maybe there's just too many miles on those tires?

"Cro Cop" is a late replacement for the injured "Big Nog," and is saddled with a +180 line against fellow storied veteran Frank Mir, who stands above him at -230.

Perhaps the bookies weren't impressed with Rogerio Nogueira's razor thin decision win over Jason Brilz back in May -- or maybe they just don't believe he's got anything left as he ages faster than Walter Donovan during Indy's "Last Crusade."

Either way, he's wearing +130 to Ryan Bader's -160.

Star-divide

Sean Sherk hasn't fought in well over a year, and when he last appeared, he was outstruck by Frankie Edgar in Las Vegas. Seemed like a pretty big upset at the time, until "The Answer" stymied BJ Penn on back-to-back occasions.

Still, "The Muscle Shark" has only three losses in the past seven years: Edgar, Penn and Georges St. Pierre. Nothing to be ashamed of, but it hasn't kept him from rising above +185 while opponent Evan Dunham enjoys his -235.

Last but never least is Matt Serra. Fellow veteran Chris Lytle is the favorite in their rematch at -140. Could his performance in their 2006 fight, coupled with his recent winning streak, explain "The Terror's" +110 line?

There's a lot of money to be made on Sept. 25 if you can put your money where your mouth is. Of course it helps to win, which you can't do if you haven't taken advantage of those numbers by heading over to BetUS.com.

Well, what are you waiting for? Don't just show up the day after the event and proudly declare "Dude, I called that one like three weeks ago." Man up and make some bread.

Remember to bet smart and only risk what you can afford to lose!

Agreed

Serra could easily take a decision.

I think Sherk would be worth a bet if it wasn’t for the lay-off. I’m leaving Sherk and Cro Cop out of my bets.

Serra and Nog are both good under dogs to bet on. But I wouldn’t go for both it would have to be 1 or the other

Arm.bar.bandit saw me slow dancing with Anderson Silva. I had my hands on his ass.

I thought Lytle got robbed intheir first fight...

but watching tape since then….Lytle has been on a serious serious decline in his search for bonuses. Serra is a steal here.

I have to disagree here NNR

While I, too, thought Lytle got robbed in the 1st, and I think he’s improved a ton since then. Serra has fought… 4 times since? GSP 2 times, Hughes, and Trigg, going 2-2 in that span. Lytle is 6-4 since then, facing (and losing to) the best in the division in Hughes, Alves, Kos, and throw in a close split loss to Marcus Davis. He’s gotten 2 wins over Matt Brown and has looked great against the B and C level guys, which is where Serra falls into. On a good day, Serra is a solid B level fighter. His toughness alone shouldn’t give him elite status. Lytle has never been stopped by strikes or a submission, and Serra’s new mentality since his fluke win has him thinking he’s a Thiago Alves level striker (who, btw, Lytle was hanging with till a pansy ass cut stoppage). There will be no Wall ’n Stall decision here like their first fight, and Lytle will outstrike and most likely out grapple Serra to a decision win.

I should never have doubted the wisdom of David W-S or the talent of Junior Dos Santos…and screw Dana White

Yeah, that was the fight that woke Lytle up

He said after losing that type of decision how he was gonna go for broke no matter what and even if he opens himself up for being too aggressive, he is going to try to keep it out of the judges’ hands. He may never be so high in actual rankings, but he is in my top five favorite guys to watch just because he goes after it.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Sep 7, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

At least in those days he use to grapple.....

now i realize he pulled his patented kimura triangle to win his last fight but only because Ricky was molesting him everwhere. If it’s up Lytle all his fights would be about swinging massive hooks, taking big shots, gassing out and hopefully winning the split decision because these idiot judges can’t tell who’s landing and who’s making sound effects. Serra will definitely not get outgrappled – he’s got serious BJJ and usually only lnp’d. He packs way more power than lytle and chris’ ability to take a shot is not like it was. We’ll see i guess because i can see it going for Lytle too if Serra is too laid back.

Lil Nog will lose!

At least I hope he does!

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

Who knows, he might win by judge robbery, he has perfected that move

BJ Penn is the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Like usual, my pick was wrong and I blame a certain pudgy Hawaiin for my own short comings when it comes to talent selection. As it stands BZ – 3 Freenow82 – 1.

Agree, I think lil Nog is the best bet

Then Serra, Sherk, CC

Actually I think Serra is the best bet; he’s got the jits to avoid Lytle’s creative sub attempts and last time they fought he was able to stay on top and control Chris for the majority of the fight. Also it seems like everytime Lytle is about to break into the top 10 and maybe see a chance at a contender fight or a title shot he chokes.

if sherk sheds his pride

And actually does what he does best, he might be worth betting on…but he actually thought he was doing well against bj…so who knows what goes on in that head

sherk is too small for dunham...

look to the dunham/griffin fight for a replica of what you will see. Plus, Sherk out for over a year = easy pick of Dunham.

true

I forgot about the layoff….that’s always a bad thing….but he boxed with edgar…when he shot, he got the takedown instantly…I’m not a big sherk fan, just think if he goes back to his roots he has a good chance of grinding out a decision

He's been injured in addition to the layoff.

Dunham’s red-hot.

I think Dunham takes it.

it’s not about shedding his pride or Gurgel syndrome: Sean Sherk’s knees are completely shot from a lifetime of wrestling and a little bit of steroid abuse. His wrestling simply does not exist on it’s previously high-level because he has lost all explosion in his shot.

separate bets on sherk and serra

I think Mir and Bader steam roll Crocop and Nog.

I may take Sherk

He was unstoppable until he decided he was a gifted boxer. He goes in against Dunham with his old style and it’s takedowns any time he wants them.

It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.

yep hes number 2 UFC LW

If he sticks to his strengths!

He should have handled Edgar had he implemented the gameplan he used through his career and that made him a champion.

WHy fighters don’t use their strengths baffles me.

Probably.

Dunno

Evan uses his range extremely well and literally rode Tyson Griffin all night long.
I think Dunham just latches onto Sherk’s back and doesn’t let go.

he didn’t decide to try to be a gifted boxer. his knees decided that they no longer can provide the base for gifted wrestling

Jesse, I think that Sherk would be a good pick

The Dunham Griffin fight will serve him very well as a blueprint of what NOT to do against Evan. Greg Nelson is a good game planner (if Sean follows it) and I don’t think Sherk will face the ring rust like some do. If anything, all the injuries could be signs of overtraining and time off could help.
