TapouT and Silver Star sold to Authentic Brands Group
Linens 'N Things, Polaroid, Tapout?
Yup. The MMA merchandising giant is now going to share a bed with former rival Silver Star, as Authentic Brands Group (ABG) today announced their acquisition of the competing brands for an undisclosed sum.
From ABG Chairman and CEO Jamie Salter:
"These are some of the most exciting brands I’ve seen in years. The popularity of mixed martial arts and the UFC is soaring around the world. The last time I saw a sport with this much potential was 20 years ago with snowboarding."
ABG is expected to continue the expansion of both brands as well as penetrate the International market with a preliminary goal of doubling revenue by 2013.
TapouT's Dan "Punkass" Caldwell will remain president under the deal while co-founder Tim "SkySkrape" Katz will serve as Marketing and Creative Director. Luke Burrett of Silver Star is also expected to remain on board.
Any MMA fans think this move hurts their "underground" image? Or is it the next logical step as these brands continue to evolve?

lot lizard...lol
Haven’t heard that one in awhile….good ol’ truck stops….what was that show with the tapout crew a few years back? There was one episode where one of the employees(upper management, middle age guy) was saying tapout was going to be a billion dollar company…lol…I’m all about aiming high, but come on! I’m no economy major, but is there any clothing company in the world that’s in the billion dollar category?

tapout
did about 100 million in revenue in 2008 and i believe nike did somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.2 billion that same year. so it can be done, but it takes time.
never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do
yea but Nike saves a lot in child labor
Those kids work for pennies, it’s all profit after that.

nike uses modern day slave labor to keep their overhead costs down. its pretty pathetic, but people still buy all their shit.

Reebok and addidas do the same shit. So does dc shoes. Dvs shoe company. Its sad but every major company does it

billion dollar company...
does not necessarily mean it makes $1BB a year, has $1BB in assets, or even sells $1BB a year in merchandise. It just means that the company is worth $1BB based upon asset value and projected future cash flows.
None of my clients have recently undergone a sell-side valuation, but in “normal” economic times, a valuation that was 5-10 times EBITDA (depending on industry), could mean that the company “only” has to hit $100MM EBITDA to be a $1BB company.

Meh.
Tapout hasn’t been ‘underground’ for yours. especially since every time I go to the fucking bar theres about 40 people wearing tapout clothes thinking they are Chuck Liddell.
It’s the next logical step, just like Nike and Reebok. They had to get bigger and the sports did.

Jon Fitch, Gray Maynard and Chael Sonnen can suck it. If I want a blanket I'll buy it in the store, not on PPV.
GSP and Rashad are getting close to joining this list.
I've noticed it too here in a small town in nebraska
This town is like 10 square miles, in the middle of a crap load of corn fields and I’ve still seen some people runnin around in TapOut clothing. It’s not “underground” at all.

Does anyone think TapouT would've sold if 'Mask' was still alive?

BJ Penn is the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Like usual, my pick was wrong and I blame a certain pudgy Hawaiin for my own short comings when it comes to talent selection. As it stands BZ – 3 Freenow82 – 1.
Naw probably not.
Good chance he would of drove the company around a telephone pole though.
Haha.. Too soon?..?

I know they have been good for MMA
But there is no better way to look like a ginormous douche than by wearing tapout clothes. If you are sponsored by them, I understand wearing it, after all you WOULD have to pay me to wear that shit!

Think he's just referring to people that don't train or have any skills in any discipline
If I was a fighter I probably would be more open to it, but if I throw on a TapOut or a UFC shirt I feel like I’m being a poser.

Well
You may not be a douche, but if you are sporting tapout shirts outside of the gym then you look like one. 95% of the general public would agree. The only way you could look like more of a douche is to wear a tapout shirt, having a feax hawk, and a neck tattoo. Like I said, you may not BE a D bag, but you might LOOK like one. Don’t shoot me, I’m just the messenger.
by Thunder Biscuit on Sep 7, 2010 12:19 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
On s serious note
The reason I don’t care for tapout is their means of marketing and advertisement. The whole costume wearing thing.. I mean come on. If you are trying to legitimize a sport, you should probably not make a circus act out of yourself. I can’t believe no one make more of a connection with tapout making mma look like wwf/www with their approach to marketing. And do I really have to comment on their “American, Arrogant, and in your face” campaign? Look, the only reason in my opinion that they do well in mma is because they treat their fighters fairly and help financially support them, well. If it wasn’t for that positive aspect of their business, they would be the BP of apparell.

How do we nominate a quote of the week?
“…when im out of the gym and have a tap out shirt on I can feel people sizing me up and trying to figure out if im a poser like them…”
If you can’t find the mark at the poker table, its you….and if posers wear the same clothes as you…well….
So because I train BJJ and don’t fight MMA im a poser for wearing tapout? Hmmm nice logic you got there. Can you explain that a little more?
GO BIG, OR GO HOME!!!
by LOKIE on Sep 7, 2010 2:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
If you’re gonna talk shit at least explain how training BJJ and wearing tapout make me a poser.
GO BIG, OR GO HOME!!!
by LOKIE on Sep 7, 2010 2:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
No moron
I am not saying you are a poser because you were a Tshirt and train…I just think it’s awesome that that you think someone else wearing the same shirt as you is a poser.
Guess what, when you wear “bitchout” clothing, nobody else is wondering if you are a real fighter or not…they are just thinking, " What a douche". You can be in the UFC and people will still think you a douche for wearing a Tapout shirt.
Fuck you prick! I asked you too explain it not be a cock sucker. Also I was meaning anyone who actually fights or trians doesn’t usually spend there time sizing people up you fuck
GO BIG, OR GO HOME!!!

the brand is more watered down now being under a roof of a company owning a bunch of brands
I'm gonna go home, watch DirecTV, drink bud light and ride my Harley Davidson!!
Silver Stars quality went down the crapper
I have the gray GSP Silver Star shirt and it’s high quality, but a few months ago I ordered the Wanderlei Silva and Thiago Silva shirts and they were so cheaply made that I sent them back. They put a graphic on a $3 shirt and tried to sell it to me for $40.
A lot of you guys slam these types of clothing but I get multiple compliments every time I wear Affliction. I look at it as a way to support my favorite fighters.
I think this a is good move for MMA
Just another step forward is legitimizing MMA to the general public and bringing it into the mainstream. I have a few Tapout & UFC shirts that I wear because I am a MMA fan. I am also a Colts fan and wear my Manning jersey on occasion. I don’t claim to be a fighter or an NFL QB, but I like supporting my team and MMA. I would hardly call anyone wearing a Tapout shirt or any other sport related shirt a douche or a poser.
