it depends on how many guys you have playing but one of my little tricks is to always pick a Tight End 1st or 2nd...big number QB's, RB's, and WR's are great but are easy to find...for example.
I had TE Dallas Clark last year and he got me almost as many points as any WR wouldve in the league….WR’s tend to be a dime a dozen but good TE’s like Clark, Antonio Gates etc. are hard to get, never get traded or released and can get you a lot of points…for me, I always pick a QB that’s never hurt ie. Manning, or Rivers 1st, then my Tight End followed by a RB or WR…just rememeber that despite the points a great WR or RB can get you, expect injuries.

it will constantly change...I ALWAYS have a QB on my bench and a defence I don't want other guys to have....the bench is the biggest part of Fantasy strategy imo

also,
pay VERY close attention to bye weeks….the best way is to rotate your bench guys through trades, waivers and pick-ups is to know when your best guys ARE NOT playing…ie. if you have Manning and he is on a bye week, you’ll need to start a diff QB. The sooner you can plan for this the better….if you wanna get REALLY strategic, build your team with guys that don’t share a bye week…sometimes you’ll end up with 3-4 guys on bye weeks with only 2 guys on the bench..this makes things REAL tricky….12 teams is tough Drew…we stop at 10 teams so there are enough good players to go around.

so out of your 12 you always have 2 team defenses? when drafting are you sometimes picking bench players before your strters, like a 2nd qb or 3rd rb before the only kicker? what is the position "IR"? injured reserve?

I only draft 1 defense...but pick them up as I need to...its very difficult to say before the 1st week cause nobody's sure how teams will really do...it always ends up being a work-in-progress
And I NEVER pick bench players before starters. Pick the BEST players you can, look at the schedules and fill your bench with players that will suit your needs….A good example would be….Lets say Tampa has a BRUTAL team again. Lets say they go 0-6 to start the season. I would pick any defense playing Tampa for sure. But its tough to say at this point if that will happen. Baltimore, NY Jets wil have great defenses guarenteed but if they’re playing Indi or any other great offense they might not be your best option. Same thing goes for positional players. A Peterson is def one of the best running backs you can draft and will probably go in the top 5 in your league but if he’s playing an awesome defense, he might not do as well as a runing back playing against a team like an 0-6 Tampa…see what I mean?

playing this way takes alot more work Drew but it works...its called playing the match-ups as opposed to playing an opponent..I've won at least one of my Fantasy pools for the last 2 years so I know it works....just takes a little more strategizing

im all about manipulating the bench, but dont you take defense and kickers last, meaning some of your bench before them?

a good defense will easily get you as many points as ANY player....
I always draft a defense 4th or 5th overall….Jets, Ravens, both should be great…my draft this year will hopefully go like this
1. QB
2. TE if I can get Dallas Clark who had more points last year than all but a handful of WR’s
3. RB Peterson, Chris Johnson, Frank Gore, Jones-Drew
4. WR (Your guess is as good as mine )
5. 1st WR or RB depending on when I’m drafting and if I get who I want initially at WR or RB
6. Def
7. 2nd QB
8. 2nd WR, or RB (Platoon RB’s kinda suck and ruin drafts imo)
Note – I always pick kickers last and usually play the match-up….I’m always changing my kicker bases on who teams are playing…..pick a game that’ll be close and posibly decided by a field goal kicker. Don’t waste time and draft picks on them as they always change. You’d think that Indi’s kicker would score alot of points and he does but they’re always the extra point conversions. You want field goals and lots of them which are usually found in close games that go down to the wire

i like the idea of not drafting a kicker at all and just picking one up each week. in theory couldt i do that with defense. if we only have 12 teams then 20 defenses will be available weekly for me to pick on thats playing a shit team.

def 1st rounders...I meant 2nd or 3rd overall in the 1st round. Picking weekly defenses is a solid idea and it usually ends up that way as soon as my top defense gets a bye week

my two cents...
I agree with Mac on most things, but here are two of my “success” secrets…
1. Take players from good offensive teams.
2. Take a kicker from a bad team with a strong leg. more scoring opportunities typically and longer FG’s = more points

agreed about the kicker....although once his bye week arrives do you really try and get him back? If you can great, but more times than not he'll get picked up leaving you to play the match-ups...it always happens to me so last year I palyed the match-up
with the kicker from week 1 and it worked great…
And agreed about the offensive teams too…but that should be a given especially if Drew is in a league with 12 teams…he’ll have to take guys from weaker teams as great players will be at a premium.
P.S I wouldn’t take Farve this year. I predict a record # of interceptions. New Orleans is gong to KILL the Vikes on Thirsday!!!!!!

nah...I am in three already.
I am always suprised in all my 12 team leagues where guys take a #2WR on a shitty team over a #3 on a stellar team. Hell, Steve Breaston won me a championship 2 years ago.

New Orleans recievers are tough to pick cause Brees spreads the ball around so much...I had Meachem last year as #2 for a couple games....but Brees kept hitting Colston...I guess thats why they call it gambling...lol
