Vitor Belfort wants a boxing match versus James Toney ...

Belfort_medium

... and he's appealing to UFC President Dana White via Twitter to make it happen:

"Dana, let me fight James Toney on a 6 round boxing match. I think I can catch him with my speed. Dana, this will be the first boxing match in UFC and I promise he will feel my power and we will show the world that a UFC fighter can do better"

Belfort owns fast and heavy hands, but are they enough to fight a boxer like James Toney? White stated after UFC 118 that there won't be another MMA vs boxing competiton inside the Octagon after Toney was embarrassed by Randy Couture, losing via submission just seconds into their heavyweight bout. White scored a Pyrrhic victory of sorts over the Sweet Science, which makes it even more unlikely that he'd risk messing that up by letting his fighers box pro boxers inside the square circle. But, if this bout ever did happen, do you think Belfort has enough skills to beat Toney up?

well yeah they are on a higher level

because all that they do is box

Yeah, take any 1 dimensional sport

Like the 100 meter dash and then take someone that Trains in football that is really fast. I bet the 9.9 times out of 10 that the sprinter wins. It is their forte. Now put them in cleats and have them see who can run routes faster or juke or break a tackle and it is a totally different story.

Or even why you rarely see the guys winning the 100 be the same ones that win the 400. Just different training. It isn’t that these guys can’t box, they just aren’t solely focusing on that.

I love Vitor

But Toney’s had 72 boxing matches and ever been caught! I"m told his only losses were close split decisions and that’s against the best pure boxers in the world. It would be just like what happened to Toney against Randy, only this time it would be Toney with the deep bag of tricks that Vitor doesn’t know how to defend. Toney would know how to fake him out and set him up in ways he couldnt forsee. I am a HUGE MMA fan and haven’t given a rat’s ass about boxing in the last 20 years, but the points made above about specialization come into play here, and for all his hand speed and power, Vitor is still a relative novice to all the little details that make or break a fight in boxing.

If you wanna see an in his prime James Toney get schooled in boxing

Watch his fight against Roy Jones Jr.

Weren’t Vitor’s trainers hyping him up like he could be top 10 in his division if he decided to go to boxing? He certainly has some of the fastest/most powerful hands in MMA so who knows. If he’d be able to master certain boxing techniques such as the shoulder roll, blocking with gloves, etc, though, I think he could do pretty well. He’d certainly have a physical advantage over Toney and it’s not like RJJ was so technical, anyway, and he beat Toney.

Jones was one of the most gifted athletes to ever compete in combat sports. Vitor has fast hands and a young RJJ could throw three punches for every one of Vitor’s.

Vitor would have the best chance of beating a fat, old James Toney out of any MMA fighter — which is still almost no chance at all.

everyone seems to believe boxers are on a higher level, I personally dont think so

You personally must have your head up your ass. Do you know how much more money MMA fighters can make in the upper echelons of boxing if they were good enough? What, you figure they just don’t feel like it?

I have an idea. Actually watch some high-level boxing. If you can’t spot the difference between the skill level of a top boxer’s hands and an MMA fighter’s, then you obviously haven’t the faintest idea what punching technique, footwork, feints and hand speed are even supposed to look like.

I agree with your assessment of the boxing skills, or more accurately, the relative lack thereof, regarding MMA practicioners. Good points.

Vitor would NOT WIN!!

Boxing is way different from MMA Boxing. The Technique Toney has in the ring Vitor has never showed and I doubt he even learned. Little shit like deflecting punches. Vitor would be KO. And he would not hit Toney. James Toney even FAT STILL will out box Vitor. His shoulder Rolling and hip movement is something that Vitor cant deal with.

People sometimes seem to forget that...

even in a pure boxing match inside the octogen, its a major adjustment for both the MMA-fighter AND the boxer. For example, boxers use their gloves for defence, backing up against the ropes pacin’ themselves and sometimes taking 8-10 shots (through the gloves) covering up, before firing back. You cant do that with MMA-gloves, doesnt really matter how great your chin is. And there is much more space between the gloves too, wich allows you to find openings MUCH easier if the target is standing still covering up in front of you. You will get hurt! MMA-fighters train to not get hit at all!

And the octogen is bigger in comparison to a boxing ring which gives better opprtunitys to create angles and stick & move, which is a huge advantage for the faster fighter. The bigger slower (bigger? stronger?) fighter cant really stalk you in to a corner.

I would not bet on the outcome of this fight (due to the weight difference) but if JDS would fight Toney in a boxing match in an octogen with MMA-gloves, I would put my money on JDS all day every day! For sure!

What are you voters thinking?

Its boxing. Its a completely different sport than MMA. Just like Toney got owned in MMA, Belfort would get destroyed in Boxing. Toney has taken shots from the biggest and the best for most of his life and never been KO’d.

Lets be realistic here. Toney – 72-6-3 in boxing with 44 knockouts
Belfort – 0-0-0 in boxing with 0 knockouts

Gloves are different, angles are different, conditioning is different, style is different. No way Dana lets this happen – he knows it would be disastrous

There should have been asterisks. Toney 50 lbs ago or ‘current’ Toney. I think current Toney does lose. He would probably still think he can cruise with training and just automatically KO.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Sep 6, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Dana, Book The Fight

Toney looked slow and out of it. Now that may well have been because of the inexperience factor but he was fat, he was slow and he got whooped on badly.
I think Dana will take this fight because he really wants to prove once and for all that MMA fighters are the true gladiators of today.
On the other hand, when Pacquiao won the super welterweight title he was within 8 pounds of the UFC lightweight division and quite honestly, I don’t see ANY fighter in the UFC lightweight division who can swap punches for 12 rounds with the Pac-Man and survive into a decision.

Belfort

He boxed professionally in 06 winning by tko. Think it was his only pro fight as a boxer. I personally would love to see it since these next 2 paid cards I’m not really excited about. I think Belfort would be able to do better than people think.

by StringBeanRickJamesLookinFool on Sep 6, 2010 11:06 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I voted for Vitor

Yeah, I know its 2 completely different sports, but its an extremely washed up, old James Toney vs. a mma fighter who’s fpught actual boxing matches. I am sure Toney is the obvious better boxer. i think Vitor could stick and move for six rounds. We didn’t get to see Toney’s cardio in the Couture fight, but I imagine he gasses after rd 1 or 2. If Toney had much fight left in him, he would be co main event on boxing PPV’s, because there are not many other names out there to promote at HW.

i give vitor a chance

This is the old washed up version of james toney, and vitor is much more powerful and faster than toney, eventhough boxing is completely different.

If they gave this fight to vitor and he will only train boxing and focus on that ill say he definitly has a good chance.

Im not saying he would ko toney but he does have a chance to win

He'll do fine!

, you gotta worry about ALL the angles! And a lot more weapons! On top of dealing with two hands, you gotta deal with two elbows, two knees, two feet, getting tackled AND getting twisted like a pretzel until you tap or break! Then, you still gotta worry about getting put to sleep! Dealing with just two hands, no matter how skilled they are, is a walk in the park compared to dealing with a whole body weapon! Vitor makes this look easier than most people think! And I say he takes the win! Make it happen Dana!!!

Junior would be the UFC fighter that I'd pick to face Toney in a boxing match

Vitor would be giving up a lot of size and even a 42 year old 238lb Toney would make him look silly in a boxing match. Vitor’s handspeed could give Toney problems but he wouldn’t have the power or experience to beat Toney in a sport he has excelled in. Junior would have the better shot as he’d be bigger than Toney as well as the younger and better conditioned athlete, plus he focuses more on his boxing than Vitor does and has considered a pro career in the sport in the past. A prime Toney would destroy both of them in the sweet science and the fact that we are even having this debate says more for Toney’s decline than how well Vitor would transition from MMA to boxing.

Is everyone here Retarded or something? Correction : Is Vitor Retarded? He must be.

Vitor has more important things to do than to get himself involved in a freakshow fight that could jeopardize his chance at the title. I don’t care how FAT and a Loser that Toney is…Just like Toney was out of his element when he got demolished by Randy, Vitor would be in the same position with Toney putting the hurting on him.

Vitor needs to kick this idea out of his head, Mirko Cro Cop style, and concentrate on getting another warm-up fight prior to going after the Championship against Silva/Sonnen in the future.

I hope and PRAY that Dana has more brains than to go this route again.

James Would KTFO Belfort

It’s one thing to side with the UFC and say Belfort would win but it’s another thing to be honest. Do you guys really think Vitor would beat Toney? Come on!

UFC uses 4 oz. gloves and boxing uses 8-12 oz gloves to box. There is no grabbing, no holding, no dirty boxing allowed in pro boxing.

You folks might think that Vitor is gonna throw one shot and end it but it won’t happen. In boxing, throwing combos are most likely to lead to a knockout than throwing a one-punch ko like you always see in the UFC. The extra 4-8 oz of padding make a big difference!

Toney is used to these gloves yet he still knocks guys out with 8-12 oz gloves and lets just face it, boxers have better chins than UFC fighters do. Boxers get hit in the face much more often and use devices to strenghten their chins and necks.

I doubt UFC fighters focus on these aspects much!
