Frank Mir: 'I can beat Cro Cop in more ways than he can beat me'

Mir-pose_medium

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"I think Crocop is still the same individual we saw in PRIDE. I think a lot of guys have seen enough tape on him to know that if you walk away from him or stand there in front of him you could be in for a dangerous night because he still has the same leg he always had. He has a lot of speed and quickness … Mirko is very good on his feet; I’m not bad on my feet, either. Add in the wrestling that I have been working on, the jiu-jitsu aspect, he has many more things to worry about. Once that cage door shuts every advantage is mine.... I don’t see anywhere I don’t feel comfortable with Cro Cop – I can beat him in more ways than he can beat me."

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir breaks down his upcoming fight at UFC 119 with mixed martial arts legend and 2006 Pride FC Open Weight Grand Prix winner, Mirko Cro Cop. Naturally, Mir is aware that Cro Cop's best chance to win the fight, which will headline the show in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Sept. 25, is if he keeps it upright. Mir, meanwhile, is confident in his advantage on the ground. But Mir feels he's better on his feet than the Croatian is on the ground, which could be accurate, but the difference standing is significant -- Cro Cop has the power to end it at anytime ... quickly. Is Mir a little too confident these days, thinking he could stand with the former K-1-level kickboxer, or will he come to his senses on fight night and waste no time taking it to the ground?

Gotta agree with Frank

As much as I’d love to see CroCop win, I think Frank subs him

God I fn hate him!

Look at his douche scumbag face, how can you note hate him?!?!

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

You are correct!

CC would have killed him! I hope he can take the win, if not at least hurt Mir. Who knows bc Mir hates to get hit, so maybe with a few good strikes he will fold. One can only hope!

Sure he would have LOL

Anyone can say anything about the past, guaranteed if CC never faced Hunt or Randleman you would be guaranteeing a prime CC could beat them too, and don’t lie you and I both know you would. Anyway the past doesn’t mean sh^t mma has evolved and if I were to pick who would win it would depend if it was in a boxing ring or ccage. I believe a prime CC would have problems in the octagon he is at home in a boxing ring.

not exactly true.

Mirko fought Mark standing for the whole fight, everybody knew he would and Mark Hunt is much better than the average stand up fighter in MMA. Mirko also beat the shit out of Mark Hunt and should’ve won that decision, the judges awarded Mark Hunt the dec for moving forward and being aggressive although he didn’t land anything of what CC did on him. Randleman was also a good fighter back in the day, he was incredibly explosive and fought a perfect fight, Cro Cop later avenged the loss by choking him out.

you are right though about the boxing ring vs octagon thing.

if mirko keeps this fight standing, he wins. that will depend a lot on what condition mirko shows up in.

CC has awesome tdd

Mir has shit td. Easy win for CC.

by jay. on Sep 4, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I think your going to be wrong jay, but thats why they fight there is no guarantee.

Mir is a well rounded fighter in every area his latest losses were to big powerfull wrestlers and though CC is strong he is no were near the power of either Brock or Carwin. This fight Mir will be the bigger fighter by around 15 pounds as I believe will be back down to around 250 he will also have a 6 inch reach advantage that he knows how to use. CC’s biggest problem is he attackes and defends standing pretty much the smae every fight and this will make it much easier for Mir to make a gameplan for and another reason CC has not performed as well as expected, his style is pretty much the same as his entire career with less effective leg kick now. The CC mir trains for by the tape he watches will pretty much be the same CC he faces and this is were I believe Mir has the biggest advanatge.

Puck, I never would have said about Hunt or Randleman!

I didn’t know that Pride existed! Still mad about that! LOL And good point about the Ring vs the octagon.

same ol song and dance!!

this shit with murr is getting old. some things a man just cant learn, so u get what we had last time, which is the way he wants it, well, he gets it. murr said this same type stuff about lesnar and carwin, and then he wasnt even man enough to take the beating they had in store for him. he stuck his head in the canvas, like an ostrich in sand, looking for a way out, hoping the ref would stop it. man up mir, face an ass whipping, dont turn ur head from the train wreck that is ur face. cro cop KO’s this guy r breaks his will n mir folds like an accordian in the 3rd!

Yeah keep telling yourself that frank

CC is crap nowadays, anyone who isnt a nuthugger sees that.

He just wants an excuse incase he loses (which isnt outside the realm of possibility being that he has absolutely NO heart whatsoever and quits after getting hit once)

I still think he wins but saying CC is the same as he was in pride is such an obvious lie.

by Lester The Pimp on Sep 4, 2010 8:21 AM EDT reply actions

disagree bout the heart

With the exception of vera…mir got knocked sensless by two of the most powerful guys competing in mma…almost any man on the planet would crumble from lesnar and carwins fists.

yeah slamagogo... whatever the f*ck that means lol

I admire his comeback as well I thought he was done for sure, but dana gives guys lots of chances and Mir as a former champion deserved every single one of them.

by THORAZINE on Sep 5, 2010 3:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Alright, but seriously

Crocop could easily get submitted, soon after the fight hits the ground. I think Crocop is a badass for sure, but Frank will catch people as soon as the opportunity arises. If Frank decides to stand, he’ll be asking for trouble. It all comes down to what Frank wants to do. But who know, maybe Frank will KO Crocop all crazy like…Just maybe. Doubtful though.

only way i see mir getting this to the ground

Is how gonZaga did it…catching a kick…if mir just shoots, cc is gonna sprawl like a mofo and punish mir on the break…and you can run tell that…homeboy!

k-1

are you the same guy who was bashing K-1 , and saying they will lose to the top boxers and mma guys ? ( wich is stupid , since kickboxers have chins and boxers don’t stand a chance , and most mma guys don’t have the striking level to compete in a stand-up fight )

and you actually said that the k-1 guys were not " good enough " so they did kickboxing , as if somehow kickboxing is an alternative to people who failed at other sports , i mean come on , the standars are still pretty low in MMA ( normal since the sport is new) , some brazilian guys in the ufc can’t puch , can’t kick , can’t wrestle , they only have jui jitsu and they are doing good in mma , seriously , how hard is getting a black belt in BJJ is compared to acquiring top K-1 level striking ? what’s more difficult , and takes longer , becoming a striker like hari , or grappeler like demian maia ? mma is home to a lot of dimensional fighters , just look at brock lesnar , a guy who took a 7 years vacation from competitive sport , and decided to strart MMA as a hobby , and became world HW champion, sorry but you don’t see that in kickboxing
and saying that kickboxing has no futur is just dumb , maybe not in your country , but it’s huge over here in brazil, in europe , southeast / east asia , and the money is pretty good too , they make more than the average MMA guy , badr hari for exemple makes a 7 figure salary , le made more money than any mma guy ,and the top kickboxers are more famous than the top mma guys , nobody knows mir , brock , or randy , outside north america

by paypayvay on Sep 4, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

and crop cop is an exemple that K-1 guys can crossover easily to mma

by paypayvay on Sep 4, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if you were talking to me

But I wasn’t bashing K1. You might have the wrong guy here.

“What’s so great about watching kickboxing? These guys would all lose to the top MMA or Boxing guys. It’s a sport that people get involved in when they aren’t good enough to compete in a sport with a future in it. What do these guys get paid for this?”

by paypayvay on Sep 4, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

HOLY shit.

That is some super sleuthing. Did you read that whole thing though? I wasn’t bashing the sport at all. I think it’s boring to watch most of the time because it doesn’t represent a fight very well. It’s the same reason I don’t like boxing or wrestling or jiu jitsu. I like MMA. I also think the HW boxing champion would beat the winner of the GP this year as well. It doesn’t mean I don’t watch the sport.

Kickboxing is a dead sport where I am from. I don’t know where you are from but it isn’t on TV a lot here. If you are from Thailand, you are probably exposed to it more than I am. Most guys, if they are really good at fighting, will go into MMA instead of sticking with kickboxing because there is more money and noteriety in it. I guess I still stand by what I said? I don’t know. It’s been 9 months. Opinions can change…

I really want to know how you remember that article and created an account to question me.

by jay. on Sep 4, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

money

no kickboxing has more money and noteriety worldwide , north america is the exception man

even in japan K-1 was bigger than pride ,and stil bigger than any mma organisation , and the sport of kickboxing is generaly the most popular combat sport over there

like i said , the top kick boxers are famous everywhere , not just brazil / japan / north america , like most mma guys . the grand prix is very prestigious , and worth more than the titles in the world of mma .

ps: i like both sports equally

by paypayvay on Sep 4, 2010 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish they had kick boxing on TV here.

With MMA getting big you think somebody would think about it? As far as the grand prix champion being worth more than any other title I don’t agree. The UFC titles have had many fighters over many years battle for them and is the most prestigious in MMA.

So am I

If Frank isn’t able to get CC down(which he won’t) do you think Mir will win. It will effectively become a kickboxing match, do you think Frank will win. And if you do, how? KO or do you think he can last 15 minutes on the feet with CC for a decision?

by jay. on Sep 4, 2010 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Mir has the better chance of finishing the fight in this one for sure.

Heh,

The dumb shit probably finally realized that since he weighs 265 and is a black belt in BJJ that wrestling people to the mat and submitting them would be a smart idea.

Instead of getting his face turned into hamburger.

Riding the Brock Train..
Jon Fitch, Gray Maynard and Chael Sonnen can suck it. If I want a blanket I'll buy it in the store, not on PPV.
GSP and Rashad are getting close to joining this list.
