Chael Sonnen: 'Nothing in my career has changed ... I'm the best fighter'
Props: "MMA Live"
Quoteworthy:
"There’s absolutely going to be a sequel. Part two is tentatively scheduled for New Year’s weekend, it may take place Super Bowl weekend. Either way, it will be in Vegas. Last time I defeated the myth, this time I’m gonna defeat the man.... The only thing [that's going to be] different is that I’m leaving there with the belt. That’s it. We were one minute away from pulling it off. Look, if I had beat him, I would have had to come back and beat him again anyways. So nothing in my career has changed. I was the best fighter before the fight, I’m the best fighter after it.... We're not here to get along. I’m not here to be number two. It’s number one or let's move on, and I think that’s the way it’s supposed to be."
Here we go again. The Chael Sonnen hype train has already left the station, with about four to six months still to go before his rematch with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Sonnen feels he's still the better fighter despite losing at UFC 117 via last minute, fifth round submission to the Brazilian. He may have a point: He squashed the "Spider" for more than four rounds, taking him down repeatedly and pounding on him relentlessly. Sonnen even got the better of the stand up exchanges during the few minutes/seconds that the pair were on their feet. But, at the end of the day, he did lose. And Silva revealed after the fight that he took it despite doctor's advice to withdraw with a back injury. So is a healthy, and seemingly motivated Silva, Sonnen's ultimate undoing or were those just excuses to cover up the fact that Sonnen has all the tools to untangle the Spider's sticky web?

i was watching this on mmalive last night, it feels so strange being a fan now. He backed it up and has earned my respect. Im still taking silva in the rematch hopefully better odds, i predict -300...

really?
you must feel SIlva’s injury brought him down 60-70%.
The rematch will look the same, with Sonnen taking him down at will. Hell he might even get subbed again too, but having seen them fight already, there is NO way im going with Ando.

question (not being a smartass, just testing out my guessing skills)
are you from California, perhaps Southern CA, and under the age of 24?
I agree tho, Chael is in DIRE need of sub defense. Hell even more so then Guillard.

guessing skills my ass, u read his profile. which became a very good one as soon as i read Anaheim Ducks.
Anderson is going to be aggressive and focused in the stand up this time around. He was extremely sloppy standing last time around and Sonnen set the tone by being aggressive and catching A.Silva.
!
come on rob...
Chael wasn’t afraid to let his fist fly and hit A. Silva in the fuckin dome like everyone else is. they don’t even wanna let their hands go when they get in there with him. Chale ROCKED him and he’s not even known as a stand up fighter. It’s 99% mental, like all fighters tell it. It’s never gonna happen, but goddamn I want Wand to get a shot, Silva tries dancing in front of him and he’s gonna throw BOMBS. Chael did the same, he wasn’t afraid, intimidated, nothing, he was ready to throw down. That’s all it is, just be willing to let those hands fly and see what happens. MAJOR props to Sonnen, cause he definatley is hands down not afraid of ANYBODY!

The only reason that he caught him at all was bc Silva was 100% concentrating on the take downs. If it were a boxing match than Anderson makes Chael look like Forrest. And Forrest let it go, but Andy is that much better on the feet than anyone. Also Hendo wasn’t afraid to through bombs. I agree some have been afraid, but not all. Including Ace in the first fight and Leaben. Chael’s success on the feet was only bc Silva was afraid of the take down!!!
Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

I was a fan when he ran through Okami, schooling Nate just added to that.
The way he won those fights convinced me he had every chance of beating Silva, and I was amazed people were still giving him no chance after seeing those wins. To me they were as good as any of Silvas best wins. Again, its not only the fact that he nearly beat Silva so easily the first time, it is also the fact that he beat Okami and Marquardt so convincingly that leaves me no doubt that this fight is again going to be much harder for Silva than it is for Sonnen, and as I have said before I have only ever been impressed with Silvas destruction of Franklin, but Franklin was half the fighter he used to be and was absolutely scared to death, apart from that I have not been absolutely blown away by a lot of Silvas wins like a many see to have been. I admit there have been some good wins, but nothing all that amazing, and not any better than Sonnens Okami and Marquardt wins which most seem to be ignoring. I am really looking forward to this, and have no problem watching the same again over a quick first or second round knockout, by either, as would be the case if he was fighting Vitor.

Ace wasn't afraid of Silva in their first fight.
And you weren’t impressed by his win against Leben??? 100% accuracy with his strikes! And how many people KO or TKO Leben? That fight made me a fan! And how about Forrest? Yea I don’t think much of Forrest, but that was awesome! How many people have done that to him? And he has fought the best and beat some of them.

BRO!!
OFF TOPIC.. I CANT WAIT TO SEE KARO PARISYAN BACK IN ACTION IN THE UFC !!!!!! WISH HE WAS FIGHTING NATE DIAZ THOUGH…
that would be a good fight for Hughes when he comes back
August 28th was an emotional day for me. Two events occurred that brought me to my knees:
1. BJ Penn lost to Frankie Edgar for the second time, proving to me that he is nowhere near the caliber of man that I made him out to be.
2. I found out that the cardio portion of Frankie Edgar’s training camp consisted of Frankie banging my mom while the arm.bar.bandit played the spanish guitar and sang "Eye of the tiger" by Survivor.
I would like to see Nate/Karo too!
That fight would sell.

TALKS A MEAN GAME FOR SOMEONE WHO JUST LOST!!!
Seriuosly – I think he is now trying to convince himself – you cant say your the best and lose!!!
Based on that theory im the best MMA fighter Ever.
Why? cause I said so, regardless of my record –
Give up chael its gettin embarassing !!!
I don't think he is trying to convince himself, he can just watch the first four rounds of his last fight and
Rewind to where he dropped Anderson over and over again. Chael has the balls to back up his trash and I became an instant fan because of it.

I’ve been coming to mmamania to get caught up on fight news for about a year or so now. Every once and a while I read all the comments you guys post and I have to say that you guys crack me up. I love hearing all the different opinions.(even the dumb ones). Very entertaining.
Hearing? o_o
Conan : You are known as a striker. Is that correct? Tell me what that means.
Chuck : Well I like to punch people, or kick them.
Gotta say though, some of you are complete morons. Not all of you, but seriously you should starts looking at the facts and not just run your mouth about YOUR opinion. Just because its your opinion doesnt mean its right
im right most of the time just not on ufc 118 :)

I give Sonnen his props but..
How else does he really win besides a decision? Whereas anderson clearly has the skills to win this fight several ways.
I mean unless he pulls a BJ and forgets his heart!
Finish Him!
Nothing has changed.....
Nothing has changed Chael still gets beaten by triangle chokes. 8 of his 11 losses have been by submission. In the UFC alone, Griffin, Anderson, Mia and Renato have all beaten Chael by triangle choke. FYI to wrestlers, evolve or get choked out again and again.
Sonnen takes the rematch!
I think he deserves more credit. Has any1 seen oakmi, mardquart, & Andy dominated like that?

i agree with you
silva can work on his td defense 24 hrs aday till the event on new years day and it wont make a damn bit of difference
the difference with sonnen and other elite wrestlers in mma is he goes right after you he has absolutely no fear, which makes him so fun to watch i luv this guy
i know he has said some inaccurate things in the past but one thing that he did say that is a 100% true is when he said ive dominated everyfight ive been in win or lose and how hes never been outstruck. hell he was able to outstrile the so called best striker in the sport dropped him more than once
ONLY BC SILVA WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE TAKE DOWNS!!!!
Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL
Once again it’s on and I love it, like Chael said first time he beat the myth next time he beats the man. Anderson time is up everybody better enjoy these next few months of his era because it’s over early next year.

Chael Sonnen has made a fan out of me!!!
Before the Silva fight I use not be a big fan of his but I used to watch his fights, from WEC to UFC, but only because they were broadcast and I never miss a WEC or UFC PPV so I pretty much had to watch him fight but ever since his comments before the Silva fight I have become a huge fan of his…. He genuinely seems like a nice guy and a fun guy and like him or not he did make that Silva fight amazingly exciting, I was raging when he got submitted but was still like oh my God…what a fight, I was up and down off the couch like a yo-yo and ever since I am a fan of his. I only hope the rematch lives up to the first fight… Good luck Chael!!
Shit! I've got five terrorists going southeast on Bakalakadaka Street!
he wasn't the best fighter on the night he lost
its irelavant how well your doing before you lose its a loss & when they write the records it’ll go down as a loss not a was winning the fight till 1 minute before the end
