UFC 125: Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard confirmed for January 1

004_frankie_edgar_medium

We knew it was coming. Now we know when.

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 2 will take place at UFC 125 on January 1 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. And this time it's for the title.

MMA Fighting broke the news earlier today.

Edgar is of course coming off of shocking the world, again, when he defeated BJ Penn for a second time this year at UFC 118 last month, asserting himself as the undisputed UFC lightweight champ.

The New Jersey native has only one loss on his record, it just happens that it came to his new challenger to the 155-pound thrown, Gray Maynard.

Star-divide

"The Bully" earned his title shot on the same night Frankie dominated "The Prodigy" at UFC 118 with a convincing decision win over Kenny Florian.

Maynard to this day remains undefeated at 10-0. With a unanimous decision victory over the current champ at UFC Fight Night 13 back in 2008, you gotta think that confidence is something that Gray won't be lacking come New Year's Day.

Will Maynard have the answer for Frankie one more time?

MMAmania.com will keep you updated on the UFC 125 fight card as it develops.

Maybe this will finally entice them to change the rules on wrestling

having two, possibly three LNP champs… Im not sold on GSP being a LNPer, only real boring fight was the Hardy fight… but like I said, if the UFC starts losing revenue because their champions are laying on people to win they will have no choice but to change up the rules, add yellow cards, etc.

he hasnt knocked anyone out in a while, he mostly just dances around

and when he gets his opponent to the ground he doesnt do anything, at least GSP goes for subs, passes and GnP’s his opponnents, Rashad does none of those things

But he can knock you out, GSP can't.

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

yea, when was the last time gsp put anyone to sleep with one strike? has it ever even happened?

shad put salmon and chuck to sleep back to back….how many other “lay and prayers” have ever done that?

Hughes?

He looked pretty confused at the end of round 1 in their 2nd fight. It’s also harder to get KO’s when you’re constantly fighting the top contender. If you find the WW equivalent of Shawn Salmon, I say GSP Kicks his head off too.

great argument

not what I was talking about though. If you have a good fighter like Rashad was at the time against a guy who throws fights, and doesn’t belong in the cage like Sean Salmon, it’s a highlight real waiting to happen. I don’t think Salmon and Cabbage are on the same level.

Crazy all of the shots he took from Timmy!

Has he ever been KO? I wouldn’t think so! He has zero defense, but doesn’t need it with a chin like that!

GSP is clearly not a KO artist

but the guys he fights don’t get KO’d often.

In his last 10 fights he’s fought 7 different guys.
Combined record of 149-42
Only 3 of the 42 losses came by way of “KO”
Kos got KO’d by Paulo Thiago
Serra by Shonie Carter
Fitch by Willy G

Chuck probably gets KO’d 3 times in 1 sparring session.

He did much worse than put him to sleep! He made BJ quite!

How many one strike KO’s are there really anyway? Most KO’s are TKO’s and basically GSP’s against BJ was a TKO. BJ talks about how Frankie did not finish him but got the decision win, fact is in two fights BJ was not able to finish Edgar either and got the loss.

Not to mention that KO's are more common at LHW

basic knowlege is LHW’s have more power in their strikes were the size and thickness of each mans skulls is around the same. There should be more KO’s as you go up weight classes, I don’t know if there is any facts behind this but I would bet the LHW and HW have more KO’s than LW and WW.

Frank Mir just took home Cro cop’s chin like he did to Big Nog. I need to stop bitching and judging with my anger and stop raging. yea he would take him down and grind him out, hed probably win by gnp..but he would ko him with a brutal right hand

gsp slaughters everyone he faces…with a relentless pace and cardio…much like cain…except that cain has a brutal ko over nog….they have the same style but cain is more of a threat on his feet than gsp is….and he doesnt even have HALF the experience gsp has…

gsp’s best stand up highlights were against matt hughes….yea thats something to brag about

Because everyone beats Matt Hughes? You think kicking Matt's head off his shoulders is nothing to brag about?

If you seriously think GSP has worse stand up than Kos powerwise or skillwise, you should just quit watching mma. You obviously haven’t got the slightest idea what you’re watching. You are wasting your time and not learning anything if that is what you think.

Kos has one punch and GSP can see it coming two weeks before it lands. He probably has some of the worst most predictable stand up in the entire division. Overhand rights only work when it isn’t your only weapon.

Kos must be embarassed though. The guy wrestles his entire life, goes to an expensive school on scholarship, becomes one of the best wrestlers in a young and rising sport only to be standing in the shadow of a FRENCH Canadian with NO wrestling pedigree.

I bet you Kos would suck GSP off if he would let him borrow the belt for a weekend. He’d take it and show it to Cain, Fitch, Swick and the rest of the guys back at AKA since none of them will ever win a belt much less defend one successfully.

Man, that much losing so close to a championship in one gym must make those guys suicidal. I know if I had to hang out with Kos and Fitch, I’d consider offing myself.

Frank Mir just took home Cro cop’s chin like he did to Big Nog. I need to stop bitching and judging with my anger and stop raging. Well I was gonna respond

But you did it much more eloquently (although I think Fitch would be a cool guy to hang with lol).

But not only does GSP have better technical stand up, I dont see alot of evidence that he has “pillow hands.” Koschecks standing punch KO’s are Frank Trigg and Yoshida. Not iron chins by any means. Meanwhile GSP had Jay Hieron, Jon Fitch, and Matt Hughes hurt bad with punches, and he even knocked down Thiago Alves. Straight KO’s? No, but he hurt all of those fighters with punches standing.

no jay im not saying kos has better stand up than gsp...clearly gsp is way more technical than kos on his feet...

hes much better at mixing things up…has a better stance…better combos…hes faster…and better all around striker…but i think kos has more power strike for strike…i think kos can do more damage with one shot than gsp can do even though he isnt nearly as slick as gsp…

plus kos has only been training striking for a few years, gsp has been training striking all his life…so of course kos isnt gonna be nearly as techical as gsp…..

Kos must be embarassed though. The guy wrestles his entire life, goes to an expensive school on scholarship, becomes one of the best wrestlers in a young and rising sport only to be standing in the shadow of a FRENCH Canadian with NO wrestling pedigree.

haha yea im pretty sure that was nowhere near as embarrassing as when gsp tapped out to strikes to a fat matt serra in the 1st round…yea so what kos got outwrestled but the p4p best fighter in the world…gsp got his ass beat by a scrub…you tell me who was more embarrased…

so much for gsp’s “legendary striking” it was on full display against serra

trigg has only been stopped by strikes 4 times in 27 fights

by HellaHectic on Sep 30, 2010 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

So?

Hughes has only been stopped three times in 52 fights by strikes. A LHW is the only guy to ever TKO Fitch, and Hieron has only been stopped twice from strikes (discluding the Goulet loss which was by cut) in 23 fights. But note that Fitch and Hughes are much better then Yoshida or Trigg (no disrespect intended)

I’m sure if GSP threw a overhand right like Kos did he would be KOing people left and right. But he is a much better striker then that. Plus you also gotta take into account the fact that GSP fights to maximize his advantages. When he fought Fitch he was putting the power on him, and only a granite chin got Fitch to the bell. Against Alves he was more interested in gaining the TD, but even then he was able to drop him once.

but ever since the diego fight he went into this crazy decision mode…but before the diego fight he was a beast….

maynard sure as hell hasnt choked out 3 people and finished alves with kicks and punches from the bottom of all places

Maynard kicked the living shit out of one of the best LW’s in the world in Kflo and even made the UFC boss think Kflo shit the bed that night. Fact is though he has been fighting in three round fights. Not everybody is a KO artist you guys. In MMA to be the best doesn’t mean you have to KO your opponent. I enjoyed his fight with Kflo and didn’t expect a expereinced top level talent like Kflo to get bullied the way he did.

I think Kflo was rocked though and scared to engage.

Many say the same sh^t about GSP and though BJ may of not looked rocked he tapped between rounds. Maynard is not a guy you want to get aggressive with because he will make you pay. You look at his latest fights … Heurta a fighter that has never been KO and he was rocked by Maynard. Nate another guy who has never been put to sleep but was also rocked by Gray. Kflo who was only TKO’d by Sanchez back in TUF. Jim Miller another fighter that has never been finished. besides BJ Penn there really isn’t many KO artist period in the LW division, I think Maynard needs to adapt submission in his game and he will be a much better version of Sherk. The other guy to watch for in this division is Sotiropoulos. I’m excited to see this fight I like KO’s and all but there is so much more to enjoy about MMA than jsut KO artist.

when the two best LW’s in the world square off at 125. Both have earned their positions and I look forward to a great fight.
How many of your favorites did Maynard beat up?

awesome

Lets hope this is the main event. Because that would mean the rest of the card would have to be stacked top to bottom. At least thats my theory

And they sure will do a prime time for this.

My Top MMA Talents

1. Jon ''Bones'' Jones
2. Anthony ''Showtime'' Pettis
3. Phil ''Mr. Wonderful'' Davis
4. Charles '' Do Bronx" Oliveira

I could see this fight being exciting

Edgars movement and wrestling ability could nullify Gray wrestling at least for a round or two. Or if Gray does get the takedown i see Frankie poppin right back up. I see this fight suprising alot of fans…i hope atleast

IDK what's worst, 119: hugfest or 125: dry-humping
