yikes, mirkos eye is pretty red on the one side!

no worries.. he still seems focused.. he’s ready to fight, i can tell……

as per all the talk about being old and if he gets injured he’s done? he’s just being honest.. he knows his time is almost up. he knows he wouldn’t be fighting brock or cain, he’s fighting frank mir.. this is a fight cro cop can win…

I don't think all the negative talk from Cro Cop

It just seems like he’s built himself a mountain of excuses over the past year or so. I don’t like hearing him talk about how hurt he is all the time and about how he wishes he could have a full training camp and that he’s not sure if he’ll keep fighting. I miss the uber confident and quiet Cro Cop that let his legs do the talking. I love Cro Cop and I’m hoping for one last highlight reel head kick but I just think Mirko is beat mentally already…and he beat himself.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who make people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

i can agree to an extent.. i do miss the quiet mirko that had an aura around him when he came out, people feared him..

but no way do i think mirko is “beat mentally” .. he is just as confident as always… if mirko has infact ‘beat himself’, i don’t think he would be fighting still.. like he said at least a few times in this interview “im going to try to win, of course”…. imo- mirko wouldn’t have taken fights against overeem, junoir dos santos and frank mir if he was beat mentally..

mirko is still a quiet guy, and he still doesnt like interviews.. or at least he feels uncomfortable doing them.. i think he’s just being honest answering the questions asked.. mirko has always been straight forward.. he pretty much admitted he’s almost done, but still enjoys the competition..

and to add to that

imo- there is nothing wrong when a pro fighter starts to consider and think about his “last fight”.. thats exactly where his mentality should be..nothing wrong with a 38 year old pro having retirement on the mind…
i think more fighters should have done what mirko is doing now by considering reality.. im looking at u iceman

i agree with buster

I think Mirko was mentally defeated long ago. He gets little glimmers of self confidence with guys like the pat barry weirdo fest, and then breaks days later. Too many excuses. Too many depression quotes. He’s beat.

I'm not saying admitting that he's on the downside of his career is wrong

It’s the complaining about training and injuries that bothers me. He’s said on more than one occasion that he isn’t into training as he used to be. He’s admitted that motivation is hard to come by now and talks about retiring all the time. He complains about his knee injuries and whatnot on a consitant basis now. All fighters fight to get to the top and Mirko never talks about having any desire to fight the best or go after the belt. He says what he has to hype the fight but it just doesn’t seem like his heart is in it anymore and that saddens me and believe me…I hope I am dead wrong about all of this and he comes out looking like a cybernetic organism sent back from the future to decapitate Mir.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who make people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

I noticed he didn’t kick against Junior and in most of his fights after the Gonzaga fight. I think they tried to play down the fact of how badly he was injured in that one and he’s never been comfortable with the whole hype model, it’s hard for him as a european and for me as a european to understand and accept the terrible business model they use.

of course it could, but don't cop out by saying it is a US versus European thing

There are many instances of hyping fights in boxing with European fighters that exactly mimic what the UFC does. The difference is that there are two promoters in boxing and one in the UFC.

Hell, the Klitschko’s have not fought a decent fighter in Germany for MANY years, but they still sell 60,000 tickets for their fights.

That's generalising a bit RoB

The whole of Europe is a different culture to America??? You speak for yourself, we in britain aren’t that different from the US. Nowhere near as different as us and the French or the germans are.

How so? (europe vs US "thing", I understand the culture differences but don't see where you are going)

I can appreciate the nuances of Italian/Mediterranean culture even though it is foreign to me, but I only see negative from you regarding anything US. It feels like you position yourslef as superior.

Actually Dog,

Had to work in Munich for a week a few months back – we’re pretty similar to the Germans nowadays, except their country is clean, efficient and actually manufacturing things.

Some Americans are similar to us in the UK, (New Yorkers I get on very well with) but some are a million miles away – the mentalist rednecks in the deep south spring to mind. I’d love to see IQ test results from some areas…

by Jimrod on Sep 23, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah maybe the germans weren't the greatest example

I went to Berlin last year and pretty much agree with what you say. A better example would have been Spain or Italy, i found from visiting those countries we are very different.

by attakdog on Sep 23, 2010 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

True.

I think the climate must have something to do with it in those Mediterranean areas – too hard to work and makes them nutty.

it is the debt that is killing everyone.

I was in Greece 15 years ago and almost no businesses even accepted credit cards. I was warned to take extra traveler’s checks to make sure I had access to enough cash because that is all that was accepted.

I went back 4 years ago and the kids were using credit cards to go clubbing. The bank mentality hit the
editerranean regions harder because there was no middle ground generation like the US/Britain/Germany where people knew credit was to grow assets, not for booze.

So holding out on ManU and essentially forcing the transfer to Spain was something a wunderkind does?

Or the sulking when he doesn’t get the ball enough?

He is a fucking primadonna that will go by the wayside like all the other sports stars before him. He also is very concerned about his celebrity as evidenced by his willingness to attract US skanks like the two you mentioned and his willingness to bare his chest for every magazine that will have him.

I thought you were leaving to go play bball? (An American/Canadian invented sport BTW) Guess when exploring the hypocrisy that is your football, you can understand why I get pissed about your US bashing?

don't matter if ppl think he's a primadonna.

he is still one of the top 5 best players in the world, top 3 and that’s why Madrid had to buy him. He did everything he could for Man U and won basically everything. Since he’s Portugese and has had Madrid as his favorite club since growing up the transer was bound to happen.

There is a reason why football is big all around the world and give so many ppl jobs and a sport to play.

Do you think

that when Real signed Beckham, they ignored the fact that he sells millions of jerseys in the asian markets? They didn’t give him all that money based solely on his abilities as a footballer man. It happens everywhere, this isn’t just an American problem.

good for baseball.

Real is a huge club and Beckham was a unique player, they’ve had major problems in Real ever since they started with these star transfers. Man U came out better from the deal as they signed C.Ronaldo as their new #7 and after a couple seasons became the best player in the world.

by Deuce02 on Sep 23, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

no, but the whole thing is americanized which i have no big problem with, but it’s not an international model that’s gonna grow the sport worldwide.. like what did cage rage get when Anderson Silva went to the UFC? what does the Swedish Hockey clubs get when NHL clubs draft their players? the rich gets richer and that’s why they have so many major organizations in America like NFL, NHL, MLB they can just grab who they like without paying up and then they trade players inside the league.

by Deuce02 on Sep 23, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

hendo's market value decreases every yr and his contract was up.

Of course the example i gave works better in team sports, MMA is an individual sport and a tour sport like Tennis and Golf.. I’d prefer no contracts and prize money for the fighters, you’d have to have rankings and a system for that so that’s not going to happen though Bellator is the only organization trying with their tournaments.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic !

by RoBerto. on Sep 23, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't

See fighters wanting this at all…" hey we are taking your guaranteed pay away, and only paining you prize money if you win! So you better Win or be prepared to have another job!" this seems WORSE fo the sport since most athletes wouldn’t be able to devote their lives to it because making a living would be harder except for maybe GSP and Anderson silva who would win every time

by soupdz28 on Sep 23, 2010 4:54 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

well, it's not like the losers walk away with nothing..

if you lose too many times you obviously go to fight in SF and the smaller circuit where you have a better shot at winning.

It pains me to see what he has become

but I can’t blame the guy. I can’t imagine that the prospects of this type of payday come around very often in Croatia.

After he losses to Mir and is released, I expect one or two more bad Japanese fights before he actually retires for good.

Cro-Flop, Ronaldo and other things

Some interesting chat here. On the subject of Ronaldo – he is a primadonna but any man who blows his beans on Kim Kardashian’s face gets my respect. Well played. The guy however is a total failure on the International scene – he didn’t even turn up in Soth Africa.

I love Cro Cop, one of my all time favourite fighters. I call him cro-FLOP because he isn’t what he used to be but neither is coleman or nogiera who both took a lot of beatings in Pride. Mirko has fought 60 fights and he’s been in some real wars! If they guy is done, so be it – let him try (for the last time?) to kick someone’s head off – I know deep down he wants to give the fans one last highlight reel finish!

Did anyone else think before the Pat Barry fight that Mirko was very relaxed and content? he was making jokes and even had a blast with the mic after the bout. I figure the less he worries and the less he cares what folk think… the better he’ll be on the night.

Cro Cop is the shiz!

Who else speaks this honestly? Assuming he’s not playing mind games (which wouldn’t surprise me), he’s just an honest guy.

Somebody mentioned this elsewhere and it made sense… when his fighting days are behind him, he could very well become a linchpin in the UFC’s promotional expansion in Europe. He’s well-known, he’s from Eastern Europe, he’s a respected and likable guy. I would not be surprised if that position is already his for the taking.
