Report: Vitor Belfort injured, replaced by Nate Marquardt at UFC 122 against Yushin Okami

Vitor-belfort_medium

Not again.

Vitor Belfort has reportedly suffered an undisclosed injury and has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 122 "title eliminator" fight against Yushin Okami on Nov. 13 in Oberhausen, Germany, according to MMA Weekly.

Stepping in for "The Phenom" will be former division number one contender Nate Marquardt, who will now face "Thunder" in the main event of the Spike TV telecast after a "Great" performance against Rousimar Palhares at UFC Fight Night 22 earlier this month.

Opportunity once again came knocking, thanks largely in part to a dreadful year for the hard-hitting Brazilian.

After a lingering shoulder injury became too much to bear, Belfort pulled out of his UFC 112 middleweight title fight against reigning division champion Anderson Silva at the Concert Arena from Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, back on April 10.

Star-divide

It was the second time his bout with "The Spider" was postponed. They were initially penciled in to collide at UFC 108 earlier this year; however, minor elbow surgery for Silva postponed the all-Brazilian brawl until Spring.

Perhaps it wasn't (or isn't) meant to be -- Belfort has yet to make his middleweight debut and hasn't seen the inside of the Octagon since a first round destruction of former division champion Rich Franklin in a 195-pound catchweight fight back at UFC 103 on Sept. 19, 2009.

At this time, the UFC has yet to make an official announcement regarding any changes to the Nov. 13 line-up; however, that hasn't stopped Internet conspiracy theorists from somehow tying this into Chael Sonnen's recent drug bust at the hands of the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

With a year long suspension likely awaiting the mouthy ex-politician, Anderson Silva will be left without an opponent for early 2011. UFC 122: "Belfort vs. Okami" was supposed to provide the next top contender, but now the promotion may once again shuffle the deck depending on the timeline for Belfort's return.

Bottom line?

Either Nate Marquardt or Yushin Okami are likely to leave Oberhausen with first dibs on the middleweight strap. But who will be wearing it by the time they get there? That remains to be seen.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this breaking news as it continues to unfold.

Don't get more transparent than this...

Obviously Vitor is gonna be fighting Anderson for the title since Chael took sweet sweet drugs. To just yank him out and mix it up seems unfair to Okami and some fans would get pissy, but to claim injury and swap him in his the perfect excuse.

I doubt that’s it, but i would hope that is the case..I don’t want to see okami or nate fight AS.

C'mon Vitor - great replacement

must be bad, he has been trying to put his name out there alot. Sucks to be him, golden opportunity for Nate. Nate was supposed to beat Chael and go right to Silva…. wonder if chael was juicing then… Cause everyone thought Nate was gonna walk right through him. I’m excited for this fight though, stylistically it should be great.

Fuck you! I'm an ANTEATER!

I hope the conspiracy theory is right, a really bad injury now and Vitor’s whole career is in danger, he will be laying off for god knows how long and also not getting any younger.

And Cote was a late replacement for Yushin.

But at least they won a UFC fight at middleweight.

Anderson Silva will fall via brutal Republican dry-humping.

by Johnny WF on Sep 22, 2010 1:25 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

leites won by nate losing like 3 points though, he got he title shot he won 5 in a row same with cote, sure the guys they beat back then seem like nothing now but remember at that time they were dangerous opponents..

now vitors last fight according to sherdog at 185 was 1/24/2009 so it’s been 20 months since he had to make weight and what 3 injuries? who knows if he can make 185 who knows when he will be back this time it could end up being 6-7 months down the line, thats almost a 2 year lay off no way he would be ready for a title shot

The UFC is so desperate to find guys to "bang" with Andy

that i wouldn’t be shocked if they risked it. Plus unlike the other guys at MW, Vitor is still a name and i guess a draw (slightly more recognizable than Marqy or okami). Unless they can find a better way to keep andy busy at 205 then no. But even at 205, he won’t fight chida or lil nog so that leaves Hashad, Page and shogun out of the elite 5. Shad/Shogun are waiting for each other so Page is left but with the machida fight, it’s not going to happen. They would have to settle for a top 5-10 LHW which no one is gonna care about. Also they can’t pull the trigger on the GSP fight as he’s tied up. I just don’t know. When is Andy returning btw from his injury?

I'm guessing Super Bowl card, think they said January.

The top 5 things I learned this weekend:
5) SEC "team speed" is O-VER-RA-TED
4) Orange and White will never look as good as Green and Yellow.
3) 102,000 people get awfully quiet when they choke on too much Duck.
2) The Vols would have had better luck playing checkers in their end zones than trying to stop the Ducks from getting in there.
1) I fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go against a Mormon when points are on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"

He's ducking Okami.....

he knew how horrible it was stylistically……….so instead he spent all his time trash talking Andy because he knew that he wouldn’t have to risk anything against Okami…….just fake the injury Marqy and Okami bash each other and are out of commission and with Fael Sonnen vs Andy being off…….a return match for Andy will either have to be at LHW or against the only guy available who already hasn’t fought for a title until the number 1 contender heals. AKA Vitor…………….Watch his injury will suddenly start healing faster after 122.

no way a guy who hasnt made weight in almost 2 years gets a title shot after a year and a half layoff, anyone see how bad of ring rust rampage had? i wanna see vitor vs page at 205, then vitor drops down to 185 fight a bisping, leben, akiyama, wandy, then maybe an okami, nate, chael sonnen, demian maia, then maybe a title shot sure it sucks for vitor and the fans but part of fighting is training, and if you cant avoid injury and train it’s your bad. cro cop has no problem fighting with an injury

I am thinking the same thing

Dana is not going to risk Vitor not making weight or not putting up a good showing after the long lay off. Not with he whole PED thing going right now.

You're fuckng kidding me

On the shit side, I was really looking forward on seeing if this would have eventually lead to an elite striker battle between Belfort vs Silva.

On the plus side, Marquardt vs Okami will be an epic battle.

Really hard for me to pick a favorite to come out on top.

Too risky. Shields could potentially use the Sonnen formula, and he has good jitz. He doesn't want Shields to do to Silva what he did to Hendo.

I still feel that Vitor needs one win at middleweight in the UFC before getting a title shot. When he comes back, he could fight Yushin, Marquart, Sonnen, Belcher, Akiyama, Bisping etc. Hell maybe even Leben. Wanderlei Silva rematch is a possibility too. I could see Leben or Silva getting knocked out against this quick beast though.
