Mirko Cro Cop: Fighting without ocular trauma at UFC 119 would be eye-deal situation

Cro_cop_12_medium

Assuming the Indiana State Athletic Commission allows him to compete in his Sept. 25 main event against Frank Mir...

"What can I say? I had bad luck in preparations. At the last training, in the last minute, I got a pretty bad eye injury. But I think it will be alright. I have to suck it up. I didn't want to cancel the fight under any circumstances. I took this fight to do a favor to UFC. I wouldn't do that fight for anybody else than UFC. I am ready to take the risk but I can say you this, all the money in the world is not worth getting my eye injured but at this point there is no chance in hell to back up. Frank Mir is gonna be my toughest fight in my UFC career. It won't be easy. It would be easier for me if I had time to do a full preparation cycle but at the end of the day that's my problem. I accepted the fight under these conditions. I was on vacation when they called me and I just couldn't say no to them. Not because of the money but because of respect to the guys at UFC. They provided me with everything and I secured my life existence fighting for them. To be completely honest, the money was pretty decent and I can assure you that no one would decline that offer. I will try to do my best, more as a routine fight, and if the fight goes to the third round it will be a handicap for me. But you know, that's life and nothing is ideal. Again I have to be honest, when you have 70 fights under your belt your priorities change. There is a fear of injuries but I assure I will give my best. I will most certainly go for a win but I think I did a lot just by accepting this fight. That's my opinion."

Heading into UFC 119 from Indianapolis, the Croat states his case (via Yahoo! Sports) and it sounds like he may have already resigned himself to losing despite promising his best effort. That's assuming Filipovic can pass his pre-fight medical exam. If he's cleared to compete, will he be at a serious disadvantage against Frank Mir? Was he already? Let's hear your take on these developments. How does it change your prediction for the fight -- if at all?

Just incase you guys think i'm some fucking Cro Cop loving Moron who doesn't know his ass from his elbow.............

I’m taking these bets purely because I ‘HOPE’ he wins, it is not looking good, not at all, not with these excuses, the training footage, the excuses. Cro Cop is my favourite fighter, win, lose or draw. Loyalty gents, not stupidity.

I still and always will believe in Mirko Cro Cop

He can do it. He’s a nightmare style matchup for Mir.

Am I an optimistic idiot? Probably. Is nostalgia speaking more than logic? Definitely.

But frankly, I don’t give a shit. He can do it.

Anderson Silva will fall via brutal Republican dry-humping.

Agreed

If this was a full camp and Cro Cop did not have any injuries I think he could best Mir even at this stage in his career. I know this is going to upset people but Mir has shown nothing in his last couple of fights. Even the NOG fight he looked extremely sloppy and with Carwin and Lesnar, those were two ass whippins that would knock most other HWs out of the UFC, but Mir does know how to talk and make himself a draw so he stays.

Even still I wonder if the recent video releases from CC and how much he is premaking excuses is his way to try to play head games with Mir. Mir is easily excited and I can see him reading all this and trying to KO Cro Cop instead of going with his BJJ just to make a point. I would love it if all this was some elaborate gameplan by CC and his people to get him to stand and bang with him and then see Mir’s head fly into the 8th row from a right leg high kick.

I just don't understand all this mir love all of a sudden.

He hasn’t changed his game one bit since the “old mir.” Now he’s just more of an ass. Forget carwin and brock…….doing what ian freeman did is more than enough.

I totally agree

Mir has not evolved at all. He used to talk about how he ended people’s careers and broke arms etc etc. Last fight against Lesnar he got owned on the ground, was not able to use any BJJ at all. This showed all HWs that have a wrestling background how to beat him. Then he gets all dilusional and beats Kongo and that makes him thinnk he is the man again only to get half of his brain cells shut off by Carwin.

I do not think he has the tools to ever beat Lesnar again or to ever beat Carwin. Cain can literally follow the game plan Lesnar used to beat Mir and do exactly the same thing to him.

I think that Mir would have a terribly hard time with Nelson. Nelson is great on the ground, has KO power and can take a shot. After this fight that is who I hope they give Mir. A loss to Nelson would mean the end to his UFC career.

Having thousands of posts on a MMA site does not make you an expert, training martial arts, wrestling or boxing makes you an expert.

by ASR on Sep 21, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

on point ASR....

I also think that Nelson would have an excellent chance and the sad part is most people would have him as an underdog. The thing that kills me about Mir’s supposed improved striking is that it came from Kongo’s fear. Faking a low single and going up top against a striker who can’t even sprawl properly (god i hate kongo’s sprawl – don’t know how he hasn’t destroyed all his toes and both knees yet) doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly developed hands. It just means your coach came up with the oldest trick in the book to beat a wolfslair fighter.

More Dana BS promoting

I can’t take anything he says seriously, time and again he has lied and contradicted himself in order to promote his fighters and shows. This is no different. He wants everyone to pay for 119 and nobody would if they knew that the main event fighter was injured and either not able to compete at all or at his best. I’m just surprised that so many people take his word as gospel because he’s only interested in making money, he’s far from an impartial voice of MMA news.

All I've heard from Cro Cop for the lead up to this fight has been

“I took this fight on short notice”

come on man

and now he has an eye thing that he can also cite as a reference as to why Mir will probably beat him.

he’s coming into this fight already mentally defeated and is coasting by only only on name value alone here. kinda pathetic for one of the greatest fighters ever.

He did take it on short notice and he does have an eye injury I don't see the argument.

of course he wishes he had a full camp for it but I don’t look at this as making excuses. He seems real calm and collected from the interviews I’ve seen I got the feeling it’s “just another day at the office” for him.

I hear what you’re saying but it does sound like he got his eyeball messed up, which is pretty f’d up going into a fight. It’s not like he’s Tito Ortiz, saying he’s 100% going into the fight and then telling Joe Rogan he had a skull injury afterwards.

It's the anti-Tito

He’s going into this fight with a defeatist attitude. Clearly he’s been offered a lot of money to take this fight on short notice with an eye injury and he’s said himself that he’s doing this fight for the money not because he has a genuine chance of victory. Easy win for Mir over a big name and a good pay day for both guys, though I doubt this show will draw much.

this is exactly what I'm saying

Yes, the eye injury is legit

Yes, I will jump if CC landed an earth shattering LHK that sends to Mir into retirement

but even before the eye injury, it’s hard to deny that the guy has made nothing but excuses since he signed on to fight

it’s funny that Tito is mentioned, because I was going to say, if it was Tito Ortiz making statements like this, there would be no end to the ridicule he’d be getting (even though we all know Tito usually does the opposite, and waits until after to start the excuse making)

by cough on Sep 20, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

difference is tito waits til after the fight to tell the truth.

Dana obviously doesn’t want his fighters to say they’re 100% going into the fights. Dana knows about these guys injuries before the fights and he’s paid Thiago Silva and now Cro Cop extra to follow through with their fights.
