UFC 122: Winner of 'Belfort vs Okami' promised 2011 middleweight title shot

Silva-thumbs_medium

Looks like UFC 122: "Belfort vs. Okami" is for all the marbles.

That's according to the UFC, which today promised the winner of the Nov. 13 main event in Oberhausen a 2011 middleweight title shot. And the recent steroid scandal involving Chael Sonnen may have played a part in its decision.

From UFC Managing Director of International Development Marshall Zelaznik:

We are glad to be coming back to Germany with UFC 122 and to reward our loyal UFC fans in Germany. Both Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami are one win away from a shot at the UFC Middleweight Title and are coming to Germany with a great deal to win and lose. This is a sporting event with tremendous international significance, and we are delighted to have been able to bring this event to Oberhausen.

Belfort (19-8) has been nursing an injury that kept him out of his scheduled UFC 112 title fight against Anderson Silva earlier this year. "The Phenom" was last seen in action at UFC 103, finishing Rich Franklin in the first round of his Octagon return back in September 2009.

Star-divide

It was the fifth consecutive win for the hard-hitting Brazilian, who also finished four of his five victims by way of (T)KO. In fact, Belfort hasn't lost since a lackluster performance against Dan Henderson under the PRIDE banner that saw "Hollywood" claim the unanimous decision.

Okami (25-5) has remained a top contender in the UFC's 185-pound division, floating in and out of contender status and always staying somewhere in the mix. Unfortunately for "Thunder," a lopsided loss to Chael Sonnen temporarily derailed his title aspirations in late 2009.

Since then, the Japanese juggernaut has won back-to-back fights against Lucio Linhares and Mark Munoz. One more and he's finally gotten his long-awaited rematch with "The Spider."

Silva hasn't lost since an illegal boot to the dome of Okami under the "Rumble on the Rock" banner back in 2004.

UFC 122 is expected to feature a bevy of German natives going to war; however, with the exception of the main event, the promotion has yet to announce an official card.

Stay tuned.

I love it when Dana makes a guarantee

What he really means is that Vitor will get a title shot if he gets past Okami. If Okami wins- well, talk to Dan Henderson.

We fight, get beat, rise and fight again.

Lol deuce

We in the UK have been “guaranteed” a title fight for the last 18 months.

Wasn’t the winner of Fitch/Alves also guaranteed a title shot?

I remember getting all excited about "the big announcement"

a while back- he was talking like it was going to be Fedor or a network deal. He said all that week “just wait, this will blow your mind”. Then, nothing. Kinda like the whole Tito vs. Dana boxing match- you realize you have been duped but there is nothing you can do about it.

Wasn't that when Lorenzo quit the casino and came to UFC full-time?

In context, that is the biggest move the UFC has made to date. A billionaire stepping down from his guaranteed business to oversee the expansion of a fledgling sport? Kinda ballsy, IMO.

I'm pretty sure the time you're thinking of was when he announced the new middle eastern partners.

And if so it definitely was a huge letdown.

This deserves a ‘rec because we’ve heard about so many promised title shots and guarantees. it’s ok, apparently Dana White is fortunate enough that Okami and Belfort are both patient and understand. While they will never call out Dana on his promise like Dan Henderson would, the fans will.

Sorry Marquardt, you should have never lost to Chael Sonnen.

lol forsure

people still think Sonnen is somehow great. Even a maximum roided Sonnen cannot survive as long as Maia or Leites did against Anderson.

It’s time for Sonnen to fall away into obscurity and then pop up in a year in a small promotion getting paid pennies and talking big game.

Even a maximum roided Sonnen cannot survive as long as Maia or Leites did against Anderson.

I hate Chael as was happy to see him lose, but do you consider Maia and Leites to have performed better against Silva? I’m curious because many people seem to value finishing a fight above all else and I completely disagree. I think the manner in which it was fought is the most important characteristic, and in that regard Chael obviously performed much better than Leites or Maia. Chael was 3 minutes away from winning a dominant decision, while neither Maia or Leites were ever in serious contention to win the fights.

The MW division kinda blows

Vitor vs Okami should get a title shot next. Sonnen cheated and is out for a year period and he deserves it. The LW division we are looking at Maynard yawn vs Edgar and no realcontender after that. At WW we have Kos GSP….again and then what? Shields? At LHW we have some matches. Lyoto vs Rampage, Rashad Shogon, Bader vs Nog, Jon Jones vs whoever maybe Franklin. Lots of good guys as always. At HW we have Brock vs Cain then the winner vs Dos Santosawesome. Also Mir vs Cro Cop. If somehow Cro Cop wins I’d love to see him fight the Carwin/Brock loser.

Okami is just boring, but he is a threat

Sonnen got the #2 because of the utter destruction of Marquardt, who was the consensus at that time. That, coupled with him being the only guy to stop Fihlo, it was easy for everyone to jump on board.

So I only catch those teams when they come up, or in tournaments (they did well in the FA cup when I was younger, which is why I am familiar with your team) Dubs is right about MLS, just not a fun league to watch. I grew up watching Man U as they are one of the few teams that has always been broadcast over here. ahhh I don't care enough to pay attention.

I enjoy just hating on it for no reason. ( At least i’m honest). I hope Favre does turn it around and is it just me or has their O line looked awful so far?

nothing has really been working for the vikes

and it’s fine, you can hate it for no reason. I hate GSP for made up reasons that I only hope will be proved correct!

I saw Brock do a Kalib Starnes!

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

I see.

I guess I was thrown off by the fact that it was an autonomous comment and not a direct reply.
