Shiny, happy, bully: Gray Maynard wants Frankie's bling-bling in lightweight rematch

Edgar-belt_medium

Props: MMA Weekly

Quoteworthy:

"I was like damn Frankie's doing good! He just kept coming, and he did good. It was a great fight. My hat's off to him. This is the best time. I went through all the top guys. Nobody can say, 'Oh he didn't do this, or this.' This is mine, I deserve this, I earned it. It's great competition. He trains hard. He's a cool guy too. It's cool because his dad is always like 'hey Gray!' talks to me and stuff; nicest guy in the world. So trash talk ain't gonna happen. But I guarantee you he's going to train hard, and I'll train, and it's going to be a good fight. It's all business. [His belt] was blinging, it was all shiny and stuff. I hope he doesn’t mess it up. I don't want any chips in it when I get it."

UFC lightweight number one contender Gray Maynard is mesmerized by the shiny gold of Frankie Edgar's championship belt. "The Bully" remains perfect at 10-0, including a 2008 win over "The Answer" in Colorado. Will he be able to repeat that performance against his fellow wrestler when they rematch in 2011? Opinions please.

Why?

Frankie was thought to be one of the most exciting guys to watch for a long while. Yes he couldn’t finish Sherk but who besides BJ and GSP has? Even Hermes couldn’t put him away with that knee that almost put his jaw thru the back of his head ….. Or BJ who really only GSP finished – Hughes just trapped him for a TKO, It’s not like he was hurt and dying under him. Gray i can see why……

Frankie is spectacular to me.

1. GSP
2. Aldo
3. Silva
4. Fedor
5. Edgar

My top five pound for pound is also my top 5 favorite fighters. Rua is close by at #6 and Penn is not even in the picture, as it should. Times are good.

I agree but

I think it’s going to take me some time to get used to his style/appreciate it. He seems like a great guy but it’s still ingrained in my mind that “finishing fights” is a better indicator of fighters I like.

Nor should he be in any P4P list.

I agree Bob.

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

the frankie and BJ fights were just the result of bad gameplans… after he takes out dunham hes gonna be on the warpath to get his title back by 2012!

The lightweight division wont be too exciting until Jose Aldo gets there

by p rock on Sep 2, 2010 1:03 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It is the most dynamic division in MMA, by far

The entirety of the TOP 10 could beat each other on any given night, the talent level is that close. And that doesn’t include guys like Gomi or Griffin or Guida or Huerta or Sot or Pearson…

Why do people feel that you need a dominant champion to have a good division?

My top 10:
Edgar
Maynard
BJ
Melendez
Alvarez
Florian
Aoki
Sherk
Kawajiri
Dunham

There is not another division that comes close to being this deep.

based on what? his loss to Aoki? ;)

He hasn’t really fought anyone at this level to know if he should be there or not. I like him and he has potential, but I need more than a winn over Joe Daddy and a loss to Aoki to put him in the top 10.

I also forgot all the WEC guys…Bendo, Cerrone, Varner, Shalourus, Roller, Pettis…good fighters that always give us a good show.

he completely dominated Joe AND Batman

he lost to Kyle Noke 6 years ago and avenged it 5 years ago. And he was DQed against Aoki in ’06. Other than that he is undefeated. Do you even check these facts or just start listing names?

wow, apparently you don't like being questioned, even jokingly...

but I did forget the DQ, just remembered the loss. Pellegrino is no great win to me, either is Joe Dadyy since the BJ beatdown. I like Sot, but apparently not as much as you do.

None of the WEC guys were meant to be inferred that they were better, just that they were good fighters at 155 that were not previously mentioned. I named my top 10, I stick by it.

Anybody see Gray's interview on MMA live after 118?

What a jackass! He came off extremely cocky, and I like him even less now. I hope Frankie finds a way to thrash this clown!

I heard an interview with Gray on Promma radio and it was so boring and uninteresting I had to turn it off halfway through

That guy just doesn’t have any personality…

What do you want from him? Personally I have liked him a lot since he was on TUF.

But people complain he’s go no personality, then he acts a little cocky and youre all over him? Also, he has a win over Frankie which no one else can claim. I think he should feel a little confident.

Only persons attitude I cant stand is Chael. He talks a huge game, basically makes up lies, but then again, he basically had to sell that PPV on his own so I dont even entirely blame him for that.

And as far as people calling Gray boring, if you cant defend a takedown or get up after you have been taken down, you dont deserve to win the fight. Quit complaining and go work on your sprawl.

I’m writing your names down now. I will gladly throw that piece of paper away if I don’t see you guys pulling little tricks like that again. I will forget what you just did there because I think we are all stressed out by the possibility of Maynard dynasty. Let’s not just loose our mind quiet yet. Frankie will stop him.

Penn never beat Edgar

But Gray did…Gray put the L on Edgars record not Griffin,Sherk,or Penn. Not only did he beat him but he totally shut him down at everything he does.Frank had no “answer” for in stand up and Frank definitely had no “answer” in the grappling. He was out classed in that fight…Gray hasn’t been beaten since. So all he has is a prayer and im afraid God couldnt care less about how bad he gets tooled.Gray by HUMILIATION

Some ya'll are suspect MMA fans

people honestly didnt watch edgar/maynard 1.. and if they did dont understand anything but the striking aspect. that was a good fight, it wasnt lay-n-pray, it started off with both wanting nothing but to stand. once edgar got the better maynard went to the takedowns but had a hard time landing some, even took a hard toss from edgar on a counter. it was unanimous to maynard but that doesnt tell you anything bout that fight at all, it was actually a good fight. being they’re both better, edgars wrestling seems better and his ability to stand from the bottom, so this could end up being a sleeper you heard it here, watch.

Gray broke his right hand.

One minute into the first round he broke the hand. Really, under those circumstances, the Edgar win was very impressive for Maynard.
