UFC Quick Quote: Will Cain Velasquez be able to handle 'someone as big and powerful' as Brock Lesnar?

Lesnar-velasquez-fake_medium_medium_medium

"What Brock needs more than anything are good sparring partners that can kickbox and grapple, so he's gotta get some guys in his camp that can actually throw down with good striking, good takedowns, good takedown defense. I'm sure the goal for that camp will be to bring some good strikers in. [Velasquez] is real tough, there's a big size difference between Brock and him though, the power factor. He's a good qwrestler so he can actually stop stuff, get out of stuff, but I don't know if he's used to going with someone as big and powerful as Brock."

Lesnar coach Eric Paulson tells Marcos Villegas that Cain Velasquez will present a significant challenge when he goes head-to-head with the division champion at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 in Anaheim. The big story surrounding the heavyweight championship bout is the size difference between champion and challenger, but the Lesnar camp is confident that "Brown Pride" will succumb to the power of the former WWE star. Anyone disagree?

Brock's size is a huge advantage, but...

if Cain can survive Brock’s onslaught, then he could possibly eek out a decision by tiring Brock and winning rounds 3,4 and 5. However, I see Brock pacing himself to make sure that doesn’t happen. I think Brock may fight safe, the way he did Herring, to make sure he wins this fight.

I'm not sure there will be much of an onslaught...

Brock looked like a fish out of water vs Carwin, he couldn’t handle a guy with solid striking and a good wrestling base. If Carwin actually came in shape there is now way Lesnar made it out of the second. Cain is smaller yes, but at the same time, he won’t gas and is a lot tougher that Carwin IMHO.

by Man_Made_God on Sep 2, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

And doesn't have near Carwin's strength

He will not overwhelm Brock, like Carwin did…and if all those shots from Carwin do not put Brock out, Cain has nothing that will. Only way Cain wins is by decision.

Yeah but cain cant put a beating on Brock like Carwin did.

Dont let Cain KOing an elderly, punch drunk Big Nog fool you guys into thinking he can stop lesnar.

I agree. To beat the beast Cain must wear him down with a volume of punches.

Brock has better cardio than anyone at HW.

Cain has no shot here.

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.-STAK

I think both guys have great cardio. Its a non-issue, IMO. The keys here are speed vs. strength.

why are you convinced that Cain is faster? because he is smaller?

I am not convinced that Cain has ANY adavantage in purely physical attributes. He is DEFINITELY a better striker, but that is all I can give him at this point.

Is that a product of better footwork because he understands striking better?

I don’t believe that they have any common opponents, so it is comparing apples to oranges at this point.

I agree on the lateral speed, I guess. It definitely is a practicable trait.

Lol at Brock's onslaught or anything for that matter.

Battered women’s shelters and churches will be offering brock sanctuary after cain is done with him. He will shut down all of brock’s wrestling, striking and burn his lungs out by the end of the 2nd rd. All I say to Brock supporters is please put money on him at your favorite gambling site…..

There are always limits to your cardio when you are carrying around that much wait...

Brock will not out work Cain and won’t out pace him. His only chance is to overpower him early, and I think he has a very good chance at doing that.

by Jimbobb on Sep 2, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He was lucky coz when he was rocked he could just shoot for a leg

and get the td every time as kongo has zero td defence. He wouldn’t be able to just grab a leg against Carwin who’s a decent wrestler and probs not JDS either, they’ll both likely fend him off and carry on landing bombs.

by d*locc on Sep 2, 2010 11:31 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yes and I also analyze fights from a bio-mechanical perspective

Kongo will never be champion or even top 5 but in terms of pure striking, those shots were as clean and crisp as they come, you couldn’t land better strikes on someone’s chin and yet Cain didn’t get knocked out, he won the fight!! Brock is fun to watch but he is about to face a real solid fighter and will get exposed, this fight is not even close and if Brock wins great, i’m a fan already,

there is a difference between liking a fighter and knowing the truth, I like Brock but I know he doesn’t have the skills to beat the best.

Attack I hear what ur saying but have you ever seen a champ...

actually run away from being hit, not turn and wave but actually run away from punches? maybe your right about Cain but im just shocked Brock lasted this long, I was on my feet cheering for Brock the whole time, in the carwin fight but that doesn’t mean I have faith in his skills to beat Cain, JDS, Fedor and a couple of others, maybe im wrong, who knows, i just don’t like his stand-up and when he was on his back he got tattooed for 4 minutes!!! Brock on his back or standup vs Cain is death!!

by Robert(1) on Sep 2, 2010 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He did the right thing against a monster like Carwin

What did you want him to do stand there and get lamped??? You seem to forget nobody had even been out of the first round with Carwin, let alone beat him! That shows what a tough SOB Brock actually is. The guys you listed, (especially not Cain ) have nowhere near the power of Carwin so wouldn’t have Lesnar back peddling like that. Herring Randy and Mir all got dropped by lesnar, his standup aint great technically, but the guy does have power and can easily hang with cain on his feet!

by attakdog on Sep 2, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

This is more about Carwin getting exhausted after 5 minutes of throwing punches...

Plus Hathaways on the way up and Aldo is still the p4p scariest baddest man on the planet. Team Gracie are all on winning streaks as well and Fedor and BJ both lost. Now that Newcastle are back in the Premier League where we belong and Warrington won the cup 2 years in a row I’m damn happy with all sports right now (aside from Englands awful World Cup). Yes Lesnar needs to improve his striking and im sure he will but his wrestling is better than Cains, he’s stronger, and not to mention he is faster. Brock will pace himself in the first and test the waters standing up and if he doesn’t like it then he will take him down whenever he wants. 2nd rd tko for Brock after some huge gnp. Cain doesn’t come close to the power that Carwin had so he wont ko him and wont be able to make it to a decision.

I’m amazed that a guy who gassed himself out after 3 minutes gets so much credit. too much muscle on his frame...

same thing happened to Lashley.

Carwin (and Mir before him) believe that they need to match size with Brock…the problem is that they don’t have the frame to effectively carry 275 or more pounds. For as hard as Carwin hits, he would do well to only work cardio (versus strength training) for his next few fights and come in at a whopping 255-260 like he did when he debuted for UFC. Then maybe he could last more than one round.

This is going to be a awsome fight

I still feel Carwin is the second best behind Brock, but Cain is a close third and I can’t wait for this fight. Cain has the wrestling and cardio to give Brock some problems but were I feel many fans are wrong is how good is Cains striking? Yeah he looked good against NOG but other than that fight Cains striking is just OK and he doesn’t have the power of Carwin. If we judge Cain by every fight except the NOG fight his striking is ok but not a big threat. Kinfd of like if we just judged Brock by just the Couture fight his striking would be thought of as good as Cains by many too. This fight is going to be won by who can gain top control and do the most damage and my money is Brock.

Proves that Brock has the power to KO people but we’ve seen from his recent fights that his technique is sorely lacking.

Anyway Unfortunately I think Lesnar will win this fight. I think that the size and power difference will be too much for Cain to overcome. If Carwin couldn’t finish him with strikes then Cain won’t be able to either. I think that JDS has the best chance at beating Lesnar because of the bombs he can throw, but I think that Cain would outwrestle JDS and beat him if they fought. I knew what i was saying but i didnt know if i’d be able to get my point across. Ive been hit by both snapping, quick punches and slow powerful punches. both suck lol.

Me too, when I was boxing. Got my ass handed to me alot. The jabs are the snaps and the crosses are the power punches.

Great example is someone like Kimbo.

Dude has plenty of power, but he doesn’t snap punches hard enough at the point of impact to create KO’s. Only broken bones, at best.

I just hope Brock learns how to defend a few punches.

Instead of falling against the cage and covering up like a 4 year old getting beat by a step parent. He came back because Carwin had NO cardio, Carwin just gave it to him in the second.

yeah but it doesn't really matter, there's no HW in the world capable of unleashing like Carwin does

If lesnar survived carwins finest onslaught, he’ll have no problems with anything cain has to offer.

carwins finest onslaught

I am hoping that we have not seen this yet, but I don’t want to see it against Brock.

But alas, tis just an opinion…if brock wants to nom nom nom on joshes ballbag before a fight, that’s his business..

Sticks and moves?

That only works when your feet are faster than your opponents. Brock will bullrush this sumbitch if he tries that.

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.-STAK

Brock isn't even that big.

I’ve seen 5 guys his size already today. He works out and trains for a living(since he was 7) What the hell do you expect him to look like? He actually looks pretty flabby to me.

I've seen pics of MBOW here.

He looks like he’s in better shape than Brock. Brock just has bigger bones.

What?

I’m saying the guy is a beast. You don’t HAVE to take steroids to have abs and shit. Hard work will do it too. Especially if you do it right, like Bow does and the way I’m sure Brocks trainers are making him do it.

Just so you know, my best friend is 6'2"-6'3" and weighs probably 325. When we were 18 he was 6'2" 260-270, benched 425 and was MAYBE a step slower than me, and I ran high 4.6's low 4.7's.

Genetics does play a big part. I don’t know why everyone talks like Brock is the biggest man on earth, there are 20 guys on every football team bigger than Brock. While I’m sure he used PED’s while in the WWE, he goes through the same testing as everyone else now.

PS-Felix can verify current size of said friend.

Jesus, I can hide behind your friend. I am a midget 5'6" and a robust 180. Fear me!

Great point.

It’s obvious if you look at Brock’s college wrestling footage that he’s just always been built like this.

And yeah, awesome point on every NFL team having someone bigger than him. Pretty much every offensive lineman is larger than Brock, at least the guards and tackles.

Wtf?

How come everyone is always going on about Carwins awesome Cardio? The guy’s only been in the 3rd round once and couldn’t finish KONGO! YES, KONGO!. You know. that stupid french guy with ZERO ground game that shouldn’t be a problem for an amazing “ground ’n pounder” like Cain to finish?

Lesnar is going to keep his distance, keep his cool.. fake some takedowns and thro some overhand rights.. eventually take Cain down and then we will see who looks like a “fish out of water.” as Cain struggles to block punches from his back.

And another thing.

Think what Matt Hughes would look like if he was much taller and much heavier. He would look like Brock. Why? Because they are farmers and farmers have muscles that you can’t get from lifting weights at a gym. This is why these guys are so big. Genetics too, yes.

Good point, and true to a degree.

It depends on the individual, but almost all farm kids do heavy lifting for chores most of their lives. As well Farm kids fun in america especially is sports, and instead of playing video games or watching movies hanging out at the corner store, bloggin on the computer Brock works out and runs for fun? Hell he still doesn’t have a computer, his fun is hunting and training and has been for a large part of his life. Can you imagine most of your time every month is training and playing sports along with all the farm work? Not that every farm kid is like that but there odds are much, much greater that than a city kid in having great work ethic and lifestyle that away from coach potatoe type lifestyle that city slickers like us are at a great risk of falling into.

I can attest to the farm strength thing.

I wasn’t even an honest-to-God farmer, I just did it for fun/summers most of the time, but bucking 60-100lb hay bales one-handed is pretty damned hard to do at first.

After a few years of building up to the one-handed bale toss onto the rolling truck, I maxed my bench press at 310lbs (age 16 I weighed 155lbs at 6’2") and could rip four sets of twelve reps at 225 like it was absolutely nothing. I’ve always scratched my head at NFL combine bench rep numbers from guys that look like Adonis. They aren’t impressive to me in isolation.
