Bellator 33: Roger Huerta won't let Eddie Alvarez 'kill his career' on Oct. 21
Props: Inside MMA
Quoteworthy:
"I'm putting this in my mind that he's trying to go out and kill me, kill my career. I'm not going to let that happen. He's going to bring the best out of me and I'm going out there to try to knock him out and to finish him."
Former UFC 155-pound contender Roger Huerta knows this may be his last change at lightweight supremacy when he faces off against Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 33 on Oct. 21 in Philadelphia. "El Matador" was bounced from the lightweight tournament by Pat Curran earlier this year but got another crack at the champ when Lil' Frog was forced to bow out due to injury. Can Huerta follow up his bully beatdown with a career-defining performance in Philly? Or is Alvarez ready to show the world there's more to 155-pound greatness than just what's available in the UFC?

Lol at thinking his career is not dead already.
Alvarez KO. It’s gonna be like KJ vs Franklin’s girl.

You think so?
I think this will be a good fight. Why do you think it will be so one sided?

ya i think its gonna be a good one too
both these dudes are tough as hell and can scrap!
never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do
The thing is that if you stay technical with Roger....
you can pick hm apart all night but if he decides to slug it out which he will – Alvarez though very hittable himself is a far better boxer and pack big big power. Huerta doesn’t hit particularly hard, or stay disciplined in a fight with a strategy or technique. He will get hit over and over until something big cracks him. I say it’s like the KJ fight because of a similar dynamic – despite Gurgel’s idiocy people generally assumed he was a tough dude who can take punishment. Well it turned out that it was because he was fighting guys that couldn’t hurt him in a serious way. But against a more studied striker with power, he got mashed out. I think the same applies here and Alvarez can definitely hurt huerta despite all his “heart.”

Exactly.
- Thinking he was a real hot property because of the “SI cover”
- Thinking he was going to become an actor
- Losing to Gray Maynard
- Going to Bellator and losing to Bellator
- Note, did I mention that his recent record is 1 – 4 which also includes the loss to Florian?
Another loss . . . yeah his career is pretty much operating on life support.

did you watch the Grey Maynard fight?
He was very impressive in that loss. He was in deep trouble and showed a lot of heart. I don’t remember Roger chirping about his greatness from any of the crap you mentioned. It’s fine if you don’t like him, I think he is a good fighter who has a lot left in the tank.
Not only does BJ Penn quit on his stool versus guys that are bigger than him...He gets tooled by guys that are SMALLER than him. BJ should just stick to jumping out of pools, not fighting. I shoulda listened to Ulf.
didn't he finish that fight on top of Gray (Kimura aside)?
Drink to remember, drink to forget.

yeah, it was a close fight
split decision I think. I just remember that deep, deep kimura- and him getting out of it. Losing a close decision to Gray doesn’t mean you are washed up.

There's very very few fighters that can make fans in a decision loss
Huerta made fans in his loss to Maynard w/ the heart displayed

It's possible that Santiago might have been injured as well, I lost because my best was insufficient, only mortifying thoughts remain now. I think I would've entered the ring even if I lost one of my legs, I'm a fighter who fights, not with technique, but with heart."

I like Huerta. If his focus was fighting, he would be far greater, I think he was believing a lot of the hype that surrounded him. I also think he suffered from the GSP glow. You know like Kenny Florian, “I train with GSP!” so . . . I should be a good fighter.
He was impressive against Maynard but he was exposed as a reckless striker and his wrestling wasn’t up to speed. But in the end, he lost and decided to leave the UFC. I like him as a fighter because he has guts, very creative but I don’t know, he seems like he’s all over the place.
Pointing out his losses doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t like him as a fighter. Oh yeah, as far as the crap I mentioned, I’m just referring to second-hand information from some one who tends to exaggerate everything, Dana White. Which of course is not fair.

I agree with you...to a certain extent
What I noticed is that he seemed different AFTER he exposed his past in that one countdown. After doing so…he just didn’t seem the same. its like he opened the gates for all his demons and skeletons to come and haunt him. I say it this way because I’ve done the same in the past and it DID alter me for a while. My ex would point it out. So for that personal reason i believe he needed to work through that. We’ll see if he has.

This one is a tough match up to really call. Sure Eddie is a top ranked guy in the world but his lack of constant top competition could make him under estimate a very very game Huerta. I think Huerta can make a fight vs anyone in the world at 155.
agreed
This is a really, really big friggin fight for Bellator. Eddie is world class and deserves to be a household name. Roger (due to his exposure – cover shot and head stomps) is a big name and a legit 155 contender. Big fight for both guys, but Eddie has more to gain with the win here. I think many casuals will be expecting the known Huerta to take it.

Problem is that all the reasons you listed for Huerta have nothing to do with his fighting abilities.
He’s a good fighter, but everything he does Alvarez does better. I just don’t see how Roger wins this fight.

Alvarez wins propels him to the top 5 of the LW rankings.
Huerta win makes for a rematch for the Bellator title

I agree with this
except I give Huerta a decent chance. I still think Eddie takes it though.

I think he definitely has a shot to win . . .
I just think he has to beat a better fighter to do it. If both guys fight their best I think Eddie wins decisively.

War Huerta!!!
I just hope he’s been working hard and staying focused on his fight career

Should be a good scrap
With what’s on the line.. style of fighters.. this should be a must see fight.. Huerta if he comes in with the right game plan with a tight training camp.. has the tools get at it with the heavy handed.. tuf as nails.. Eddie Alverez. I’m looking forward to this fight.. for sure.
I'm too big of a Huerta fan to be objective
BUT I think he in the very least makes a fight of this.

He is too tough not to make it a fight.

I believe he's gotten through whatever turmoil and distractions he was going thru in the UFC
Curran was just a better fighter that night, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have Alvarez’ number. I am not saying he will definitely beat Eddie but I refuse to believe anyone that says he has no chance. When you have heart, a clear mind, and skills…you can do a lot.
WAR HUERTA!!!!

this is definitely not a fight I would want to bet on
I think Eddie will take it, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Roger win either.

If Roger wins
I would be eccstatic. That would be so awesome to see Roger with a belt and more importantly, such a big win over a top contender and GREAT fighter like Eddie.

I would say that would be his biggest win
ever. No question.

If that "altercation" involving Roger did anything, it made him more well-known and if he can defeat Alvarez,
things will sky-rocket for him.
