Independent World MMA Rankings released for September 2010
The September 2010 Men's Independent World MMA Rankings have been released. These rankings are independent of any single MMA media outlet or sanctioning body, and are published on multiple MMA web sites, as well as www.IndependentWorldMMARankings.com.
Some of the best and most knowledgeable MMA writers from across the MMA media landscape have come together to form an independent voting panel. These voting panel members are, in alphabetical order: Zach Arnold (Fight Opinion); Nicholas Bailey (MMA Ratings); Jared Barnes (Freelance); Jordan Breen (Sherdog); Jim Genia (Full Contact Fighter and MMA Journalist Blog); Jesse Holland (MMA Mania); Robert Joyner (Freelance); Todd Martin (Los Angeles Times and Sherdog); Jim Murphy (The Savage Science); Zac Robinson (Sports by the Numbers MMA); Leland Roling (Bloody Elbow); Michael David Smith (AOL Fanhouse); Joshua Stein (MMA Opinion); and Dave Walsh (Head Kick Legend).
Note: Jake Shields, Jason Miller, and Paul Daley have each regained their eligibility to be ranked, because all of their disciplinary suspensions have expired.
Note: Nick Diaz is still not eligible to be ranked because his disciplinary suspension does not expire until September 23 (which is because it did not begin until June 23).
Note: Gilbert Melendez is still not eligible to be ranked because his disciplinary suspension does not expire until October 13 (which is because it did not begin until July 13).
Note: Due to the fact that his recent fights have been in the middleweight division, Jake Shields is eligible to be ranked exclusively in the middleweight division until he makes his return to welterweight. However, several individual voters chose not to rank Shields at middleweight because of the fact that his return to the welterweight division is just one month away.

The Men's Independent World MMA Rankings are tabulated on a monthly basis in each of the top seven weight classes of MMA, from heavyweight to bantamweight, with fighters receiving ten points for a first-place vote, nine points for a second-place vote, and so on.
The rankings are based purely on the votes of the members of the voting panel, with nobody's vote counting more than anybody else's vote, and no computerized voting.
The voters are instructed to vote primarily based on fighters' actual accomplishments in the cage/ring (the quality of opposition that they've actually beaten), not based on a broad, subjective perception of which fighters would theoretically win hypothetical match-ups.
Inactivity: Fighters who have not fought in the past 12 months are not eligible to be ranked, and will regain their eligibility the next time they fight.
Disciplinary Suspensions: Fighters who are currently serving disciplinary suspensions, or who have been denied a license for drug test or disciplinary reasons, are not eligible to be ranked.
Changing Weight Classes: When a fighter announces that he is leaving one weight class in order to fight in another weight class, the fighter is not eligible to be ranked in the new weight class until his first fight in the new weight class has taken place.
Catch Weight Fights: When fights are contested at weights that are in between the limits of the various weight classes, they are considered to be in the higher weight class. The weight limits for each weight class are listed at the top of the rankings for each weight class.
Special thanks to Eric Kamander, Zach Arnold, and Joshua Stein for their invaluable help with this project, and special thanks to Garrett Bailey for designing our logo.

No love for JDS... brutal.
And Tim Kennedy he has to be so close to cracking in.
Lightweight Division is spot on IMO.
As we always suspected - Jackson's MMA secures another victory under suspicious circumstances. Freenow82 called it and is seldom wrong when pre diagnosing a Lay n Pray / Vaseline victory before it happens. Free 2 - BZ 3... I smell a come back.
I thought TK won that fight!
I think they have JDS in the right position as well?

should definitely be above Carwin with a wide margin.
He should be above Werdum as well. These tools needs to learn how to be objective. How in the world could anyone put Forrest Griffin as #5 at LHW? his record is the worst out of all those guys.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic !
It's impossible to rank fighters in different orgs
As far as just UFC fighters I think it fairly accurate. there is room for arguement with JDS, Cain and Carwin in any order 2-4 but none the less they are with little debate all top 4 in the UFC.

Funny how they have all these restrictions on who is eligible for the rankings yet they have Vitor in there. I have nothing against the guy, but he’s only had two fights at MW (Terry Martin and Matt Lindland) with his last one being January 2009. How can he be not only ranked so high but ranked at all in MW. Does beating Terry Martin and Matt Lindland allow you to be ranked 4th in the world?
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
and this kiddies
is a good example of why rankings are BS.
Not only does BJ Penn quit on his stool versus guys that are bigger than him...He gets tooled by guys that are SMALLER than him. BJ should just stick to jumping out of pools, not fighting. I shoulda listened to Ulf.
I know they’re BS, but if they have all of these restrictions I’m suprised he can make it in. He’s talented no doubt, but I think this is a perfect example of hype-machine in action.

a very very violent hype machine.
We will see wont we.

I’m not saying that Vitor is hyped…his ranking definetly is the product of it though. I like Vitor and it does take a really good fighter to turn Rich inside out, but I don’t think he’s done enough at MW to be ranked yet. Him being thrown into discussions about fighting AS (legit or not) are the reason he’s ranked so high and not his accolades at MW.

I dont disagree
but rankings are designed to cultivate discussion.
We could pick 10 guys out of the entire selection and go back and forth for a week.
But I see your point and don’t disagree. Vitor needs to beat Okami.

right bz that's why you don't just pick out 10 guys.
you pick out the guys with the best records. Yushin Okami for example is ahead of Dan Henderson, his record is much better and that’s a fact, it doesn’t matter who they’ve fought.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic !
Not taking opponents into account would be ridiculous.
Even though the BCS system is bullshit (as their should be a playoff), there’s a reason that small conference teams (i.e. Boise State, Utah) can have undefeated seasons and not be considered as good or better than teams with slightly better records but who play a tougher schedule. It may not be an ideal system for college football, but it’s certainly better than just giving a championship to the team with the best record without considering their competition.
"Before I do anything I ask myself, "Would an idiot do that?" And if the answer is yes, I do not do that thing." - Dwight Schrute
Doesn’t matter who they fought???? That’s the worst idea I’ve heard in a while. Of course it matters who they’ve fought. I know you believe once people make the big show they’re fighting a similar level of competition, but that’s just not true. Rankings will always be subjective, and no matter how much you disagree with that, they can never be objective.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
they can if the organization decides to and they are on the same level.
if they go on win streaks they fight the best in the organization right?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic !
Just UFC ranking or just SF rankings are much more accurate
Thats why I like the UFC the best alwasy fights the best.

agree
current ranking is like trying to compare:
Saskatchewan Roughriders to the Arizona Cardinals
or
The New York Yankees vs. Hanshin Tigers
It just doesn’t really work. Throw in the ring in dream and the difference with the elbow rules and it makes this a really silly process.

Boo Tigers! War Seibu Lions!
The top 5 things I learned this weekend:
5) SEC "team speed" is O-VER-RA-TED
4) Orange and White will never look as good as Green and Yellow.
3) 102,000 people get awfully quiet when they choke on too much Duck.
2) The Vols would have had better luck playing checkers in their end zones than trying to stop the Ducks from getting in there.
1) I fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go against a Mormon when points are on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
It’s still not objective at all. I hate to tell you that cause you’re a knowledgeable (except wrestling) and passionate poster. How many wins negates a loss? 2, 3, 5? That means that guys like Oliveira (14-0) would be ranked higher than Edgar (13-1). That would be the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. The amount of losses to overcome the amount of wins would still make it subjective.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
agree with all of this
how long was Miguel Torres win streak? Like 34-36 something like that. My bet, is that he had been fighting the level of competition he has fought in his last few, he would never have appeared in any P4P lists. Randy Couture is a perfect example of someone who always took tough fights and his record reflects that.
Not only does BJ Penn quit on his stool versus guys that are bigger than him...He gets tooled by guys that are SMALLER than him. BJ should just stick to jumping out of pools, not fighting. I shoulda listened to Ulf.
Exactly guys
Wandy is another prime example the greatest fighter ever in MMA period in my opinion. Does his record show this? No it doesn’t his fights and calibure of opponent is why he is one of the greatest ever if not the greatest.

eh
I don’t think Vitor is over-hyped. He is legit. You don’t dismantle Rich Franklin without being special. The ranking is BS and motivated by other factors (selling any of his fights at 185), but that doesn’t negate the fact that Vitor has the talent.

Vitor hasn't done anything to lose his status
It’s good to see Jon Jones finally on the top ten list
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
if his last fight was finished I think we'd have that spot
Scotty should fight Bowles next. I think he’d put on a dominant win and get some attention after that.

How is Forrest ranked that high,he shouldn’t b ranked in the top10.Forrest may be the most over-rated fighter in the ufc

It would be totally insane to see a rank without Wanderlei Silva or Rich Franklin some years ago. I add Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture.
