"The lesson I learned was the fact that you got to become a more complete fighter. You just can't rely on wrestling. You have to have wrestling defense. And Georges is definitely a strategist. He's going to come in with a good game plan, and I believe that he's going to come in with a different game plan. He's a smart guy. He has a lot of smart people around him... And I have to be prepared to fight off my back. I have to be prepared to fight this fight anywhere, in a bad situation. And there's a chance that I could be fighting off my back again in this fight because Georges is that type of athlete. He's very, very good. I got to be prepared to fight off my back... And I've seen a lot of his fights. I'm going to continue to watch his fights and study them. I'm going to have a great game plan and I'm going to come into this fight and come out with a victory come December."
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 conference call took place yesterday featuring coaches Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck. And aside from the awkward back-and-forth banter that took place between the two top welterweights, a bit of strategy for the fight was discussed. Koscheck admitted the fact that he realizes there is a very good chance that he could be on his back for much of the fight, just like their first bout at UFC 74. He says he's ready for it. Why did BJ’s corner throw in the towel, too much being laid on? (notice I didn’t say quit, because I don’t think BJ gave up, because I know BJ didn’t give up)
GSP has worked his ground game a lot more since his Serra and been fighting more tentatively, but he’s not losing on his feet, he’s clearly winning all aspects of the fight. Hate him all you want but don’t be stupid about it.
I hate Chael Sonnen, but I still give him his due.

it’s still the truth and you should understand that. GSP hasn’t finished anyone and has been a decision junkie. What was the point of BJ going out there for the last round? He was clearly down in the rounds and all GSP wanted to due was get greasy and cuddle for the last 5 mintues. I wouldn’t want a greasy man wearing speedos laying on my either. Maybe you would. GSP’s ground game isn’t shit…it wont be until he finishes somebody.
Don’t compare GSP to Chael Sonnen, because Sonnen puts on a better show and at least keeps fights interesting trying finish or be finished.

I wasn’t comparing him to Sonnen, I’ was simply pointing out that even though I hate Sonnen (who has a much higher decision win ratio than GSP by the way, check it out) I still give him credit where it’s due.
BJ’s corner stopped the fight because BJ was incapable of continuing, it wasn’t that he didn’t think there ‘was a point’, he was beat up, it’s silly to say otherwise.

And that is without training wrestling at all. Because he was that confident with it. Now, with a completely different outlook on the fight and lots of wrestling training, I think he can definitely hold his own with GSP. On paper Koscheck was/is the best wrestler in MMA.

Koschecks collegiate record is well documented, he has one of the best ‘collegiate records’ of any fighter in MMA.
Does that always translate to mma success? No.
But based on previous ‘collegiate success’ Josh is one of the best wrestlers.

KOS did not worry about wrestling when training for GSP their first fight. He was surprised bu GSP’s wrestling and went back to his roots for the rematch. I see this being a lot more competitive! And I also see GSP on his back a few times. Didn’t KOS take a round in their first fight? I don’t remember, but I have heard that a couple of times around here. I just want to see a good fight bc unless you are a big fan or a big hater, no one wants to see a one sided beating.

This is the first time that I have said something like this bc I can see KOS’ wrestling being a more important roll in this fight than the last one. And if KOS can keep it standing, even for a short time, than it will be interesting. I remember him saying that wearing them out was part of his strategy to make striking easier, but I think you’re letting your hate for GSP color the way you interpret what he says. Kos did not win a round. Watch the fight again. GSP controlled Kos for well over 2 minutes on the ground. Kos didn’t even get the last minute and a half. GSP landed a BIG shot when he had Kos down and Kos appeared to have landed one in the last 15 seconds.
GSP outstruck him in the 1st round and kept Kos down when he tried to escape from GSP by trying to roll out. GSP was 1 for 1 in takedowns while Kos was 1 of 2.
Just because GSP gets taken down does NOT mean he loses the round automatically. I know it rarely happens but just because he gets taken down doesn’t mean the opponent gets the round.
Great argument. The judges decided Koscheck won a round. And thats all that matters.

I had it 30-27 GSP, but 2 of the 3 judges gave Koscheck a round and their opinions were the only ones that mattered that night.

actually Koscheck does have a really strong chin. who has ko’d or tko’d him? only Paulo Thiago and a lot of people argue that koscheck could have continued. I’m not one of them, I was extremely happy to see the douchebag laid out, but even I have to admit he has a decent chin.

All I have to say is...
a win is a win…who cares how GSP does it. He beats everyone handily. I have seen him outstruck twice, against Serra and BJ the first fight. He doesn’t have to satisfy people on this site who want to see him stand with everybody he fights. His standup sets up his takedowns and his ground game is one of the best in MMA…why change anything? He works for subs and tries to improve his position at all times, anybody who says he lays n prays is flat out a GSP hater. That being said I think he can tool Koscheck standing if he wants, but he will take him down and pound him…and I don’t blame him one bit..

Surprised to hear a more humble Kos
Nobody really knows how this fight will go. Gsp felt very comfortable standing with him in the third round in there first fight, kos was the one who attempted the takedown and failed. IMO gsp is the better MMA wrestler, despite koscheck having all those credentials from almost 10 years ago. I also believe gsp has better stand up based on there last fight and observing both of these guys fighting in several fights, these are my opinions and it seems others disagree, so be it. Koscheck looks fairly green to me standing, he still falls down after a high kick and I really can’t see the ever evolving koscheck, he still throws those wild over hand rights like most beginners would do…but if it lands squarly, its lights out for anyone. Koscheck is a dangerous opponent and almost anything can happen in this fight, I wouldn’t be shocked it kocheck won, just surprised and disappointed.

Koscheck could win
but he will never be the true welterweight champion as that would necessitate beating GSP twice.
Look at what they said about Frankie after he defeated Penn. He became the true champion only after proving he was better than Penn by defeating him more than convincingly a second time.
Koscheck winning two bouts against St-Pierre is like getting hit by lightning twice with a winning lottery ticket in hand both times.
Flukes can happen but Koscheck will never be champ as long as GSP is competing. Unless you believe in miracles.
