Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson: 'If Lyoto Machida decides to fight me, he's going to sleep in the first round'

Rampage-wide1_medium

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"I started this camp very early. I stayed in shape from the last fight and the weight hasn't been an issue this time. Every single minute of this camp will be focused on technique; not getting back in shape or shaking the ring rust after a long time off... If Machida decides to fight me, it will be an exciting fight for one round before he goes to sleep. I am expecting him to run from me, though. He'd wear sneakers into the Octagon if he could! But don't worry, I will hunt him down and get him anyway."

With UFC 123 officially announced for November 20 from The Palace of Auburn Hills just outside of Detroit, Michigan, it was a matter of time before "Rampage" Jackson started to sound off against his main event opponent Lyoto Machida. Quinton claims that if "The Dragon" chooses to fight him instead of run from him, it'll be a short night for the former UFC light heavyweight champ. Do you agree? What's your early take on this intriguing 205-pound showdown? Predictions, please.

Fight

Shogun showed Lyotos only real weakness was getting kicked a hell of a lot….when was the last time Rampage threw a kick, or even went for a takedown for that matter? Rampage is too predictable and it wont take Lyoto long to get his timing down to KO him. Lyoto wins via k0 round 2?

by c-war on Sep 15, 2010 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

did he? cause i seem to remember shogun knocking lyoto down with his hands when he came at him aggressively the 2nd time around.

If Rampage comes at Lyoto aggressively with his hands he’ll win. Lyoto’s only chance will be to land a knee to the body or go for takedowns. Rampage wins 100 out of 100 in boxing against Lyoto, Lyoto has no real boxing technique at all.

when was the last time he came out aggressively? I agree that he could come out swinging, take some punches, and KO Machida. But he wont. He’ll get kicked, punched, and knee’d from crazy angles, get taken down, and unani’d.

by Rivalution on Sep 15, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe so but that’s the way to go if he wants to beat Machida. I hope he knows this and i think he might after what happened to him when he sat back against Rashad.

He has zero chance at winning if he stays at Wolfslair

That is a joke of a camp and it does nothing for Page to train there

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who make people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

Roberto here's how I feel about Rampage..

He doesnt change is style…. however, Rampage is hellva wrestler and he does possess a decent shot, if he actually adds that and clinch work to his gameplan his aggressiveness will work because it will help to mix it up a bit with Machida. Rampage doesnt posses the Kicking skills or fast footwork Shogun has so at this point I see Machida winning a boring unanimous decision.

by THORAZINE on Sep 15, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

big chance of that happening yes.

Rampage is physically gifted, he’s incredibly strong so he should be more aggressive on the inside. Him standing back and just defending Rashad’s shot was just a waste of talent, he should be attacking right there.

Dear Rampage,

Please take the fight to Machida, don’t even think he’s going to bring the fight to you. He’s going to spend the night being elusive, we all know that.

I think this could be a bad stylistic matchup for Rampage, but I am hoping that he shows up in great shape, like he’s talking about in his quote, and ready to be aggressive like Shogun was. Study that blueprint Rampage and lay off the junk food!

Rampage has the ability to KO anyone at 205. But he will have to get in range to land and Machida is a counter striker and will be extra cautious after his first KO loss. Rampage should mix it up and change levels and maybe even go for a TD or at least feints.

That's pretty much it.

Page’s best chance is that he sneaks a strong shot in or else it will be decision-dragon time.

Odds are it will greatly mirror the Evans fight but with much less lay n prey.

And like the Evans fight, there will be moments where you think Rampage has a chance for the KO, but skill will allow Machida to maneuver out of the submissive position and by then a gassed Rampage will just throw wild haymakers hoping to get lucky.

by RogersPark Kris on Sep 15, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it will mirror the Evans fight at all Rogers

First of all Machida and Shad are two different kind of fighters. I doubt Machida will be trying to take Page down. Page is the more dominant ground guy IMO because strong wrestlers can GNP a BJJ player into submission. Besides that, Pages submission defense is stellar.

Machidas only shot here is to play the points game. Score points and move, if he stays in the box in front of Page for too long he will get countered and end up on his back looking up at lights just like the last time he came in with that weak ass punch defense.

Page IS the most dangerous striker of the two while Machida is the most diverse striker of the two.

Unless Machida has delusions that he can hang in the pocket, I don’t think Rampage will be able to chase Machida down before losing the decision via elusiveness.

I hate it, but it seems like Rampage has hit the “ceiling”, unless he can come up with some new tricks.

I don't know that I would compare Rampage with Tito

clearly Page has the hands and KO power that Tito never really had. Tito could never beat Chuck and Page has done it TWICE when Chuck was in his prime….and finally Tito doesn’t have the chin either that Page has.

They are both have a wrestling base and live in Cali but that is about where the similarities end.

I wonder how today’s judges would score 15 minutes of circling each other

by cough on Sep 15, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That makes for an interesting question as to Machida's UFC 113 "performance"

Was it more of Shogun forcing him directly to “do something,” or was Machida spooked by the previous fight into going aggressive? (That, combined with the idea that others had that Shogun might have won the judges’ decision had he been more aggressive in the third or fourth, or even finished it in the fifth.)

by Chortles on Sep 29, 2010 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Shogun’s defense is excellent and Rampage has even better boxing D, he’s not going to come in like Sokodjou, Thiago Silva, Kaz Nakamura or Rashad chin up in the air Jardine style chasing after him. Look what Chael did to Anderson when he came at him, sitting back is a sign of hesitation and that is the worst thing you can ever do against a guy that you know is much better than u technique wise, make it ugly, tackle the guy.

Wouldn't that just run into the same problems with training with Jackson's MMA?

He wouldn’t be the star, and he’d somewhat share the place with Forrest Griffin.

As an alternative, there’s the possibility of at least tapping into the Jackson’s MMA “network,” i.e. going to TriStar where Firas Zahabi is.

easy to defend when you know how the other fighter sets them up….notice how Griffin let go as soon as Page started to lift him up…..Forrest knew what as coming and defended accordingly.
