Josh Barnett signs multi-fight contract with Strikeforce

NEW YORK (Sept. 13, 2010) – Two-time champion and top world-ranked heavyweight superstar Josh "The Babyfaced Assassin" Barnett has signed a multi-fight agreement to compete for world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE.
"STRIKEFORCE is the home of the best heavyweight division in the world and I’m proud to be able to call it my home now," said the 32-year-old Barnett (29-5), an expert in catch wrestling who hails from Seattle, Wash. "I’m looking forward to competing amongst the greatest fighters in the world and fighting my way to another world title."
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Barnett became the youngest UFC champion in history at age 24 when he scored a second-round TKO (4:35) on MMA legend Randy "The Natural" Couture in Las Vegas, Nev., on March 22, 2002. In his sixth career fight, Barnett submitted wrestling and MMA legend Dan "The Beast" Severn with an armbar in the fourth round (1:21) in Hawaii.
In addition to his achievements in America, Barnett has spent a good portion of his career competing in top tier promotions overseas, including the now defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan where he notched memorable victories over the likes of Aleksander Emelianenko, Mark Hunt and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
On Oct. 21, 2006, Barnett took part in PRIDE’s first event on U.S. soil, submitting Pawel Nastula with a toe hold in the second round (3:04) at Las Vegas’s Thomas & Mack Center.
In 2008, Barnett competed in another Japanese promotion, Sengoku. After submitting (heel hook) Hidehiko Yoshida in Tokyo on March 5, 2008, Barnett returned to action on May 18, 2008, and earned a unanimous decision over top-ranked rival and fellow American Jeff "The Snowman" Monson.
Barnett signed an agreement to compete in Japan’s DREAM promotion earlier this year. Last March 22, he made his debut with the organization, submitting former K-1 tournament champion and devastating power puncher, "Mighty Mo" Siligia, with a kimura at 4:41 of the first round.
On July 10, Barnett followed up the strong showing with a first-round TKO (punches) over Geronimo dos Santos in the main event of a fight card in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

But SF needs to get their guys fighting having them signed really means sh^t. Overeem and Werdum are out tell next year and rumored to be fighting eachother for the belt. Fedor and M1 have stated they are looking to fight in Russia or Japan later in the year against someone? So that leaves Big Foot as the #1 contender against who… ohh yeah he is rumored to be the guy maybe fighting Fedor??

He obviously hasn’t fought anybody decent for sometime so how has his training and development been going, fighters now days are evolving and the Barnett from Pride would have a tough time against these guys. Any fighter will tell you the fighters all around have evolved greatly from 5 years ago. A Barnett of the juice is not guaranteed a top 10 my friend.

I think he would have Brock subbed by the end of the second round. They always talk about Mir being a heavyweight specialist, but he doesnt compare to Barnett. He would never be able to take the beating that Barnett can, and still pull off a sub.

I bitch about SF constantly. One thing that I am always complaining about is their lack of depth at HW. This is a good signing for them. Anything they can do to create some matchups at HW is only going to help. Good job SF.

There are many kind of banned substances
And different levels that have to be brought into consideration. Look at Brett Favre with Pain killers. So with Cali’s list Sherk is the only ones using steroids clsoe to the performce enhancer that Barnett was caught with in the UFC and before the Fedor fight. How many times were these guys caught most of them with fat burners. lebens was more of a weight loss but it did have increase strength effects but I don’t think they were near the same level as typical roids that you are thinking of. No they are not getting help cutting weight is not the same as using fat burners, in my opinion anyway
Roids used to increase development and strength in muscle are on a different level of cheating than weight cutters. Now suspensions were all handed out to the weight cutting PED’s and I think the punishment fits the crime. Barnett not only was caught once but twice and on a different level than all these names that were caught once.

And most agreed the substance they were caught with is cheating, but not on the same level as traditional roids as far as a performance enhancer. But they did help these guys cut weight and make it eisier to keep the strenth they had to fight and I think the punishment is fare.
Barnett was caught taking five or six different banned substances!! And then he got caught again!? He’s on a entire different level of cheating than these guys. First this started with you defending SF for signing Barnett a two time roid cheater
So I asked to to prove who used roids and you listed six name. Out of those six names I gave you two or three that didn’t take roids. So there are three or four guys that took roids. Ok thats were who took roid debate ended. And a simialr debate started on Barnett being comapred to these guys. Were I don’t agree he is on the same level as these guys as far as cheating.
I think first off he never served his punishment and went to an org were no testing was done after his belt was stripped by the UFC And then he comes back to US soil and tests positive again. Comparing him to these guys is wrong. First a two time cheater has proved he never learned a lesson were all these guys have been tested after and none of them were caught again. Second jay jumped in with cheating is cheating and all the same. And I don’t agree with that.
So what have I been proved wrong with. I asked for proof on who took it(many guys make claims on here and I wanted proof) you gave it to me. I never said none of those guys didn’t use roids but stated it’s fair for them to get a second chance as BArnett did with Pride, but I don’t believe there names should be beside BArnetts as far as comparing a two time cheat agaisnt guys that cheated once and proved many of there banned substances were different than Barnetts and in my opinion on a lower level as far as a PED. Getting help cutting weight is cheating though I agree. So once again what did you prove me wrong on? I never once debated the guys you proved took them such as Sherk and Hermes didn’t take them? But I did debate that they shouldn’t be be compared to Barnett.

What I’m saying is cheating once is not as bad as cheating twice and I’m saying there are different levels of cheating. As and example putting vasoline on your back in a fight is cheating and your win or loss can be taking away as is throwing the 12 to 6 elbow strike like Jones did against Hamill but it’s not the same level as roids. It’s all cheating but on it different levels.

How many times has that guy been DQ’d for flagrant shit like performing retinal surgery on Don Frye with his thumbnails, Knocking out Referees, and trying to bite pieces off his opponent. I’m not defending juicers, but I’ll take them over that animal any day. Yvel should have been banned from all combat sports for life. Hell, he shouldn’t even be allowed visitors unless they’re on the other side of a safety-glass wall. And the UFC lets that freakin psycho in the cage with their fighters! WTH!?!

Actually, he was just the shortest reigning champ in UFC history, since he got stripped of the belt immediately when the post-fight test proved he was juiced. That fight should’ve been overturned and ruled a Disqualification. It pisses me off that the commission rules that he’s cheating and strips him of the belt, but still lets the fight result stand as a loss on Randy’s record.

I think if Barnett can be clean, he’ll show that he’s a dominant heavyweight. I agree with a bunch of the above comments that SF’s HW division is probably its strongest, and I think Barnett adds to that depth. I just hope he’s cleaned up and ready to get back in the ring.
