Takanori Gomi: I think I can take the UFC lightweight belt

Takanori_gomi_medium

Props: Nightmare of Battle

Quoteworthy:

"BJ, Florian have a jiu-jitsu base so I had a hard time dealing with them but the champion has a wrestling base so I can fight him calmly. I’m aiming for the belt? Yes, I am. I think I can take the belt. Hmmm…I wonder if I’m stronger than the champ?"

Anyone think "The Fireball Kid" is off his rocker? Or does the former PRIDE lightweight champion, fresh off a stoppage of Tyson Griffin at UFC on Versus 2, have a legitimate shot at Octagon gold?

I think that fight makes a lot of sense.

Then maybe Florian-Griffin? Just throwing out ideas. Who does everyone else think BJ and Florian’s next fight will be?

im not even interested in florian right now, but that sounds like a fight that could actually get booked.. i hope not,

cause i am really hoping for a griffin/guida rematch…

no way!

well, it would be a good fight.. as long as florian doesn’t take his tactical route like some other fights.. but the reason i don’t want that fight is simply not wanting florian to get anywhere near a title shot leading into next year.. imo- florian should have to fight a few no name guys while the ufc figures out what to do with their next contenders..

How about Sotiropoulos-Gomi

For a #1 contenders match while Maynard fights Edgar. I know it sounds like a bit of a reach, but there are not to many guys at 155 that are at the top of the pile now that BJ has lost 2 in a row and Kenny just lost….Diego and Nate are up to 170….Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida are solidified gate keepers…..not sure who else you would put in a #1 contenders matchup

by domino effect on Sep 1, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

great matchup!

Only flaw comes in the fact they lose one potential contender in an already small selection. The fight itself would be great though. Also, they are literally my two fave Lightweights along with Guida rounding out the top 3, so kinda sucks on a personal level too.

When Evan Dunham wins against Sherk he needs to be in a No.1 contender.

If you do Gomi vs G-Sop, then the winner fights Dunham for No.1 contender. But thats a long space in between fights. If Evan finishes Sherk impressively, he may get the title shot next. It would be a bit rushed, but the kid will be undefeated, with a mix of KO, submission, and decision wins. That, and we really got no one else. Gomi shouldn’t get a title shot going loss, win, win.

and if he can, is frankie even going to be champ by then?

Gomi was peppered by Florian with a great jab and floated in and out with great footwork

Frankie is even better at this technique and he would batter Gomi who only throws power shots. I don’t see him beating a guy like Frankie with that kind of hand and foot speed. I think he could beat a guy like Guida or maybe even Maynard.

What Gomi needs is to come over stateside to train instead

of his students and crap shooto fighters/his buddies that hang out at his gym. He also needs to get real coaches to teach him and guide his camps. Finally and most importantly what gomi needs to do is fuckign learn how to provise a strategy for fighting. Then he can become a champ again.

Gomi would definitely have a big advantage standing against Edgar.

those small fast shots Edgar throws would be an invitation for Gomi to step through and KO Edgar.

well for one BJ has probably never even thrown a power punch in his career.

He is always looking to counter and have his opponent walk straight into his punches. Gomi is coming forward throwing combinations and heavy leather looking to finish fights and hurt his opponents. BJ does not do that, when have you ever seen BJ KO someone with a combination?

They both have beat some great fighters in their primes to get the belt.

It wouldn't surprise me to see BJ announce his retirement

He’s done it before, he talked about retirement after his 2nd fight with GSP as well and he didn’t look like he really cared to even be there against Edgar. I don’t know if the fires gone or he’s just tired of training and dieting and living the life of a professional athlete, but he didn’t look motivated at all and if he’s lost the desire then IMO he needs to hang it up.

I think Sherk is about to wake up a bit.

He fought thirty-some fights with a proven method of him winning. Throwing fast combos on the feet. changing levels, take down, ground and pound. After the negative stigma of the steriod charges, he seems to have felt an extra push to get into exciting slugfests to win people back. He has to know now that his stand-up method of waiting with his short arms to sit back and counter punch is why he is losing. Dunham’s length will at least make him get back to his old formula because if he couldn’t sit outside on lil’ Frankie, he can’t possibly try it here. If he does that, I will be interested in seeing what the old dog actually has left in the tank for one last run.

WAR GOMI!

I think he’s the best fight for Penn right now; carreer wise it would be great for him if he could pull off a win, and with the way BJ looked this weekend I’d say Gomi’s got a great chance. Penn looked like he didn’t even care, no rocking back n forth, hands up like he’s itching to get at the guy, no energy, didn’t look psyched up at all, just looked like he didn’t give a shit.

Also, imo Frankie winning just made the LW division a little less interesting. I know there’s more possible match ups and it’s cool that there’s a title fight where odds are 50/50 and you really don’t know who’s gonna win, but who’s really chomping at the bit to see Maynard vs Edgar 2? Unless there’s a real strong card to support that main event, I wouldn’t even bother. Not because I don’t think Edgar’s a great champ, but because I can’t see those two having an entertaining 5 rd fight given the styles. And god forbid Maynard gets the belt, he gets the wins but these aren’t exactly high light reel victories.

Agree with all of this

I don’t want to see a gifted fight for BJ. Guys have lost 3 in a row before and not been cut. I don’t think anyone should be given a fight to win. Give BJ Kenny or Gomi. If Gomi or Kenny steamrolls BJ, that will say something significant about where he is at.

Not only does BJ Penn quit on his stool versus guys that are bigger than him...He gets tooled by guys that are SMALLER than him. BJ should just stick to jumping out of pools, not fighting. I shoulda listened to Ulf.

he was taking the belt and that he wondered if he was strong enough. Implying that he was physically going to walk up to Frankie and take the belt.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

I'd be pretty damn happy if Gomi came in there and took the belt

It can be my xmas present.

The only way that Gomi can take the belt is if Frankie gave it to him, if they fought Edgar would make him look even worse than he did BJ.

Frankie is way too fast, too technical and too good a wrestler for Gomi to handle. He needs to worry about winning back to back fight and stepping up his overall game before even mentioning the champ.
