I know I am a hypocrite

B/c I was bitching about Vitor getting a shot in a division he hasn’t fought in (for the UFC). But, Okami just doesn’t interest me. Wins against Lucio Linhares and Mark Munoz shouldn’t get your name into the title discussion. Yes, Okami should have gotten a shot a long time ago, but that doesn’t mean he should get one now. I am not interested in instant rematches unless someone loses via close decision, cut, or DQ.

instant rematch for me

favourite fight for a long time just on the fact it surprised the hell out of .plus i want to see if the rib injury was a big part of it.that has threw the fight even more up in the air imo and only a rematch will tell us that.put okami vs belfort in a no.1 contenders match

Had to cast my vote for Vitor

I think Sonnen could justify a rematch with just one win, but in the mean time I wanna see Belfort and Silva go toe to toe. And if Vitor doesn’t get Anderson then I wanna see Vitor vs Wand 2

Give Anderson Vitor and give Sonnen a rematch with Maia.

And he can go away after he gets tapped again. Then maybe he will train some jits instead of bragging that he doesn’t.

He schooled Silva for the entire fight and lost to a quick sub.
A submission was the ONLY chance Silva had to win that fight because he sure wasn’t getting anywhere striking.

And you want to see him go away?

chael did great BUT

He most definitely will not do so again Anderson was injured and wasnt taken him seriously the first round as you saw in round two he woke up(not that it helped). I don’t see Chael doing so good again im 99.9%sure that if they fight again Silva will TKO Chael in the first.

Give Vitor the damn shot if it was Vitor punching Silva in the face he wouldnt have been ‘rocked’ he wouldve been ‘asleep’.

It was a great fight there is no question about that but this was not Shogun vs Machida where Machida clearly lost and was given a win, this was Chael doing awesome and then losing via sub. Put Chael against Palhares or Leben or winner of Bisping&Sexyama.

Chael (when fresh) did a great job trading strikes with Silva

Watch the fight video again

Sonnen was mixing punching with his leg strikes just enough to get in range for the take downs.

I know this is hard for Silva huggers to believe, but perhaps it wasn’t all because of the rib injury that the fight went the way it did.

sonnen wins the rematch handidly

when ur able to dominate someone the way chael dominated anderson, there’s no getting past that. just like we saw with page n chuck in their 2 fights. i could tell after the first fight that there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING chuck could do to page and everyone n their brothers just knew chuck would win the 2nd fight! No Way!! a person u manhandle will never be able to beat u. just think about it guys, if u beat someone that easily, do u think the guys got a chance in hell the 2nd go around?! i certainly don’t!

I gave Sonnen a chance based on his manhandling and schooling

of Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami. Are you Silva fans so blinded by your love for this guy that you completely ignored those wins. I thought they were very impressive, and it is because of those wins plus how he managed to do the same to Silva, including able to strike with him, that makes me believe he is more than capable of getting a win the next time round. I said before the fight those easy wins against jits guys and his easy win against Forrest would work against him, especially with the work and effort Sonnen put in against Nate and Okami. Silva will definitely take away a lot from this fight, but I getting a sub in the last two minutes of the fifth round after getting owned the entire fight ,does not make me believe he would get a definite win in a rematch, and apart from beating Franklin who is only half the fighter he was, I do not think any of Silvas last five wins in the UFC were that amazing and definitely not better than Sonnens last two wins. I have to agree with some, who say the only reason that you do not want to see Silva rematch a guy who gave him the best fight of his life and had everyone on the edge of their seat, and who also nearly got the victory is because you are scared he might lose. I actually do not care who wins or loses as long as it a good fight. These guys are only fighters, they are not your buddies or friends.

there is no fucking point in having 3 fucking title rematches in a row

we had shogun/machida…penn/edgar….there is no reason to have silva/chonnen….

why not go ahead and have brock/carwin 2 while you’re at it, carwin came WAYYYYY closer to finishing brock than sonnen came to finishing silva…..and was a WAYYYY better come from behind victory…silva was never in trouble of being finished…..

there is no reason for a rematch…..sonnen got TAPPED…he was FINISHED…..

shogun/machida was a controversial decision….bj/edgar was a close decision and bj was a dominate champ….

but sonnen WAS FUCKING FINISHED…therefore no rematch is warranted…..

Seriously?

It’s a case by case basis in my opinion. I agree that Shogun and Penn should not have been given immediate rematches, but in this instance, guaging who is ready and waiting in the wings, we have no one of suitable caliber to give Silva a run. The key word is ready, because although a case can be made that Vitor is not deserving, he most assuredly is not READY after almost a year out of the cage and surgery. So, that being the case, Okami looked like shit against Munoz, and Marquart and Maia are out. The Sonnen fight was incredible, and entertaining, so on that alone and the fact that there just isn’t anyone of suitable caliber, I say rematch now.

by Slim473 on Aug 9, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Who are you agreeing with?

Because he didnt say that Shogun shouldnt have had his rematch…..L2read? Shogun more then deserved the rematch considering he clearly won the first fight there was no end ifs or buts about it, it was fact he won and the judges which shouldnt have anything and i do mean anything to do with mma thought otherwise.

by Deuce02 on Aug 9, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't agree with immediate rematches period, however..

I’ve suffered through enough weak opponents for Silva to last me a lifetime. I would much rather see Belfort, no doubt, but in this instance, I just see no choice but Sonnen. To me, makes the most sense in that he has proven he can bring the fight. After the shogun and penn losses, there were plenty of suitable opponents to fight Machida and Edgar without immediate rematch. This is a unique situation since this weight division is lacking the depth that the other divisions seem to have.

by Slim473 on Aug 9, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

but the point

was that an immediate rematch only makes sense when there is a debatable decision, a dq, a cut or the like. It doesn’t make sense in this case because “almost” means absolutely nothing in mma.

Why do rematches have to be based on a controversial decision? If they fought a hard competative fight and both guys laid it all on the line, let’s do it again! and in this case, quick! If Vitor was ready, I wouldn’t be arguing this point, but he isn’t and Okami just isn’t ready either.

NONE of those fights matched the round-by-round intensity and determination that this fight showed.

It was a great story where david/rocky nearly defeated goliath/Drago.

In the end the heart of a champion prevailed, but it also showed how much heart Sonnen showed.

It’s also a great show of “wrestling vs BJJ”.

by Conan the Barbarian on Aug 10, 2010 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think doing well before losing should be the standard by which we declare immediate rematches a must.

Sonnen had his title shot, and he lost. Whether he lost in 30 seconds, a 5 round decision or in the last few minutes is irrelevant. Unless the outcome is disputed somehow (for example, Machida vs Rua 1), there really is no reason for a rematch.

It would be a bad, and silly, precedent to set that a guy will keep getting rematches until he finally wins. He had his chance, he lost. Now he has to climb back to the top the same as anyone else.

There are many examples of guys who were doing very well before losing (Carwin vs Lesnar, and any fight involving Big Nog come immediately to mind) – yet they didn’t get immediate rematches. People are letting their dislike of Silva cloud their judgement,

i believe the way you win and lose is VERY relevant.

i can’t remember the last time a challenger dominated for 4+ rounds and the champ pulled off a sub for the win.( the duration of onnen’s domination matters to me and i bet to most of the people that want to see the rematch) i can’t remember the last time i was interested in a silva fight or when anyone put a beating on him. vitor is an easy win for anderson imo, chael would probably beat him if they rematched.

i would rather see a guaranteed exciting AS fight then one against vitor or anyother opponent which could be a five fight dance off.

I wanted Silva to win, but quite honestly as a fan I don’t give two shits. I want good, solid, entertaining fights. I’m tired of weak challengers to Silva’s crown. We finally get a good one, and you guys beat the drum about 1 win and then title shot. This isn’t the NFL playoffs. Give me the most entertaining and competative fight, not who’s next no matter what. Yea, send in Vitor with cage rust and straight out of surgery. Sounds like a great fight. And he’s only ever fought at MW since he’s been in the UFC….

I think people may be missing the point

Purely looking at this from Dana’s prespective, he has to at least be considering it. I personaly would love to see an immediate rematch, but have no problem with giving Vitor a shot either. However, (again looking at it from Dana’s viewpoint) look at the freakin buzz this whole debate is causing. A rematch would capitalize on all the hate and bitterness from either side. If I was going to announce a rematch, I’d do it fast, and start up the machine again.

Don't necessarily disagree there

But if hype is what Dana’s looking for it makes sense. There are plenty of reasons it may not make sense from a competitive standpoint, and all the oher reasons. But, It generally come down to what can they sell?

Although I want that rematch now...

I’m just happy to have two potential competative fights for Silva at 185. It’s been a long time since I was excvited about seeing him fight anyone. Kudos to Sonnen for bringing it and I am excited about a potential Vitor fight. I just don’t think Vitor is ready straight off surgery.

by Slim473 on Aug 9, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

I want a rematch. It only makes sense. Yes Sonnen lost. but he beat silvas ass like noone ever has. he did everything he said he was going to do, except win. I think he has earned a rematch with his performance. I hate silva with a passion because he is not as good as all the nut huggers say. sonnen proved that silva is a dancer not a fighter. he should go join so you think you can dance. im sure hed do fine there. yushin okami….seriously? he should get a shot after beating munoz? ha i laugh at that. vitor? sure may be an exciting fight. but what has he done to earn it? he beat franklin at a catch weight. i really like franklin but he hasnt been the same since silva destroyed him both times. so i dont think that a win over him should launch you to a title shot. sonnen is the only answer to this problem. hes the only one that has posed a serious threat to silva. he showed that he will FIGHT silva. and i do not buy the broken ribs excuse. when he said that after the fight i thought i just got done watching a tito ortiz fight. give the fight to Sonnen and lets see if his masscre, although came up short, was a fluke or not

No, it doesn’t.

Yes Sonnen lost. but he beat silvas ass like noone ever has.

And he lost. Technically, Damien Maia and Thales Leites lasted longer than Sonnen. He didn’t lose a close decision, there was no controversy – he LOST.

I hate silva with a passion because he is not as good as all the nut huggers say.

Thank you for proving my point that the people who want a rematch are just upset that their guy didn’t win.

As for the rest of your crap – if I wanted to look at that, I’d stare at my toilet bowl in an hour.

They both have dimished skills. My gut is that Wand will have a hard time coming back from this injury and be effective again. I was being sarcastic, each time Chuck comes back, the saying is he’s one win away from a title shot.

Leben and Wandy will be wicked. Now as far Silva’s next fight I think either way as the poll shows fans want to see Belfort and fans want to see a rematch. I say Sonnen had his chance but because he came so close he only needs to win one fight to get another shot then we might get to see Silva face both anyways.

Did you actually see the fight?

Or even the weeks of build-up going into the fight?

As stated earlier, the reasons this fight was epic:

-the smack talk was great (over the top at times, but Chael does a great job of getting under people’s skin). He was like the anti-Silva. Loud, unabashed, full of shit, but above all, entertaining.

The fight itself was great.

Sonnen, being the heavy underdog, was actually able to back up most of what he said and dominate this fight through 4 and half rounds.

Stunning the world and challenging the legendary strike ability of Anderson Silva.

And all the time as seconds past, you could see that Silva was praying for one his submission attempts would work. Make no mistake, he was grabbing at Chaels wrist the entire fight and it wasn’t until a weary and perhaps dazed Sonnen was Anderson able to finish the triangle/arm bar attempt.

It was unbelievable seeing perhaps one of the great strikers be out struck by a wrestler. Perhaps he wasn’t beaten in the stand up game, but it was still shocking to see Sonnen do anything from there.

And the fact that Silva kept his composure and finish the fight added the greatness.

I would love of you to make a case of a fight you enjoyed more/thought was more epic instead of making the cheap backhanded insult.

Lets be honest

Except for the names and the outcome, we saw the same fight earlier on: Fitch vs Alves. We have seen the same fight from Shields, from GSP, from Clay Guida, from lots of fighters.

It was standard “wrestler controls his opponent and throws some punches that don’t do any damage”. Let’s not get carried away, ok?

No way was it like 'Fitch vs Alves'

Sonnen did a shit ton more to inflict damage then what Fitch did.

All Fitch cares about is getting/maintaining position. Sonnen was hugely successful implementing a GnP gameplan. This was probably one of reasons he lost, where instead of taking the easy route and just play defense against the sub attempts during the final round, Sonnen was aggressive and got caught.

You say great fight

but you mention all this stupid shit about pre-fight smack talk and yadi yadi yadi. To many, sonnen was not that heavy of an underdog. If you looked at the betting lines, it was a lot closer than any fight since Forest. He did not stun me with his performance. Silva got taken down easily by Lutter and Marq, so this came as no surprise. What many of us thought (and what I predicted) was a gritty fight with Andy pulling off a sub. Many regulars on here posted these sentiments leading up to this. You talk like this was a K1 fight or something. Sonnen was able to hang on the feet due to the amazing wrestling abilities of sonnen, not because of Sonnen’s world class striking ability. Andy trained his wrestling with Munoz, who was owned all night by Okami, whom in turn was owned so much by Sonnen that he went to sonnen and trained with him after their fight. Fights that I enjoyed much more than this?

I can give you about 50

but how bout we start with just one…..

but it was only due to the wrestling aspect that allowed him to do so. Andy was afraid of the takedown. I can’t blame him.

I also think that Sonnen had a really good gameplan

by charging at him, not giving him time to set up (Andy usually likes to dance around for 1-2 minutes to get comfortable and get the dude timed). Sonnen fought a wrestlers fight, gritty. That is the blue print to beat a great striker (watch for Randy to employ this same gameplan on JT).

that was torn during that fight?
I like the idea of Anderson Silva being “unstoppable”. It sort of builds a kind of mystique that a sport needs. On the other hand, I was so shocked by what I was watching, I found myself rooting for Sonnen. I’m Not sure if it was one of the most exciting fights of all time based on the actual fight itself, but it was certainly a feeling that I haven’t had in any of Andy’s fights before. I never once before thought he was in trouble until that fight.

I had all sorts of ups and downs prior to and during the fight. Up until this fight, I was bored to death with the Silva antics, no challenges, etc…then Sonnen came along, and for a bit I was amused by his comments, then he went on and on into overkill, so much that I wanted nothing more for Silva to lay a beatdown on him. Then during the fight, I gained respect for both guys. Each round went by and I could not believe what I was watching, thinking that Silva was still going to pull it off. Minutes went by and then out of nowhere the sub. I thought they both displayed a tremendous amount of respect for each other after the fight ended, and both were humbled respectively. Excellent fight, and maybe not one of the greatest of all time, it is up there for seeing a champion dig deep and win after being drilled for 4.5 rds. It was amazing to watch.

Or just Yushin. He’s arguably as good a wrestler as Sonnen (I know Sonnen beat him, but Thunder has really improved since then) and has superior striking and sub defence.

Plus, he’s won as a UFC middleweight. Unlike Vitor.

That said, I’d love to see a rematch sometime soon. Give Sonnen the Maia/Miranda winner (ie Maia) or Chris Leben.

Anderson Silva will fall via brutal Republican dry-humping.

Leben?

How did he get in the mix?

3 wins in a row

2 only a couple weeks apart, he’s at least up for a fight with a top guy that might get him a shot.

I don't think he'll get the shot

But he deserves the chance to try.

While the wins weren’t against anyone special, I did forget about the quick turn around between his last two – that should get him some special treatment I think.

anyone who punches someone over 300 times and gets beaten doesnt deserve a rematch

there is no way in hell that someone who lands over 300 punches and STILL FUCKING LOSES deserves to EVER be considered for another shot at a championship EVER again…

if i layed down on the floor and let my 11 year old cousin punch me in the face 300 times as hard as he could id be in a coma…..no PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED fighter should EVER punch and elbow someone in the face over 300 fucking times and still allow his opponent to make him say “I GIVE UP, PLEASE NO MORE, THE PAIN IS TOO MUCH”…..that is fucking retarded….

if you cant beat a guy by punching him 300 times then you dont fucking DESERVE to be in a championship fight….

While I don’t fully agree with you, rec’d for passion and original argument.

It could be said that if Sonnen really wanted to win, he would have tried to finish the fight.

Actually, you can argue if Sonnen decided to start Dancing around the Ring ala Silva and played Keep-away...

…for the final 2 minutes, the fight was pretty much his to win.

I think his mistake was that he DID try to finish the fight….

Chael deserves it over Vitor for sure

I’m not much for immediate rematches either, but in this case I am 100%. The fact that Anderson hadn’t been domonated and beaten like that in years, plus the fact Vitor hasn’t done anything at 85 in UFC. I wouldn’t mind seeing Vitor/Belcher throw down!!!!

andy hit a game winning 3 pointer at the buzzer..
he hit a game winning homer in the bottom of the 9th
he threw a game winning touchdown on the last play of the game..

who cares if he was losing….he did the equivelant of what happens in EVERY other sport on the planet…he pulled a come from behind victory at the end of the “game”…

no one says “DAMN IT….THE SAINTS WERE LOSING THE WHOLE GAME…TILL DREW BREES THREW A GAME WINNING TOUCHDOWN…I WANT AN IMMEDIATE REMATCH”

“THE LAKERS WERE LOSING THE ENTIRE GAME UNTIL KOBE LANDED THAT 3 AT THE BUZZER, I WANT AN IMMEDIATE REMATCH”

the saints are the superbowl champions…the lakers are the nba champions….anderson silva is the ufc champion….

champions win….even if its the end of the game or the fight…they win

I'd like to see them fight again

but not necessarily in an automatic rematch. Sonnen did clearly lose the fight and there was no controversial decision like Machida Shogun I. But Sonnen did a lot better than most has done against Silva. I know there was the Silva post fight injury comment but who knows to what extent that injury affected him. For all the fans that stood behind Silva despite his BS in some of the recent fights, Sonnen should be hailed as the guy who finally got your guy to fight (albeit from the bottom for most of the fight). Loved that Chael immediately ran across the cage to engage knowing he was going to take some punishment in hopes of giving some. Way better than Maia sitting on the outside and throwing his hands up and complaining rather than really going after the guy like Sonnen did. It’s a shame Sonnen doesn’t defend subs cause he really let Silva off the hook.

Vitor should fight Okami

Winner gets a title shot.
Chael should fight the loser of that, with the winner fighting Leben/Wanderlei winner for the NEXt shot.

and sonnen should rematch maia to see if hes learned anything bout sub defense
