Ed Soares: Chael Sonnen couldn't finish Anderson Silva -- why should he get a rematch?

Sonnen-mount_medium

Props: Fight Hype

Quoteworthy:

"[Anderson] showed what a champion is made of. He fought through all of that adversity and through all of the things that were going on in there and he stayed focus and never gave up and that's the heart of a champion ... Once he tapped, Chael kept fighting. He didn't let go because he wasn't sure of what was going on. He wasn't going to give that position or submission up until he was sure. Once again, Chael tried to deny that he tapped until he told the ref, 'I believe you,' it's like, come on dude, that's the same shit you did with Filho and Babalu. If you're going to tap, then tap ... I mean, I don't necessarily think an immediate rematch is legitimate. It's not like he won by decision. You got submitted, man. Anderson got a few bumps and bruises, but let's be realistic, you're on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn't finish him? Why should he get a rematch?"

Count Ed Soares among the people not excited to see "Silva vs. Sonnen 2" after his top fighter, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, survived a 23-minute beatdown at the hands of Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 last Saturday night in Oakland. Soares believes it's an open and shut case based on the fact that Silva finished the fight -- but fans may want to see another go-round simply because no one has ever dominated the Brazilian the way Sonnen did. How about it fight fans, Silva vs. Belfort -- or Sonnen? What gets your PPV dollars in early 2011?

Except the two times Andy had his legs turn to jello.

Or the 10-1 outscoring he achieved in the first 23 minutes. AS is scared.

Truly Elite champions can choose when they feel like winning.

How do you know that wasn’t the plan? Everyone was mad at him for dancing with the Maia so he let himself get beat up to please all clowns that were moaning for months then just subs him. There were so many open positions for armbars and triangles in every rounds, i figured he just wanted to build drama or the injury was more of pain in the ass than he thought.

I would go with Sonnen getting tired and Silva having a ton of heart and skill.

Really??

Silva was on queer street after the left hook (?) in the first. No one is THAT good, that it was planned that way.

Gameplan?

Chael’s not a strategic type of fighter. He has only one gameplan for everyone. An andy without fucked up ribs would have put that on him in rd 2. Which is what will happen in the rematch.

I think he basically answers his own question. Beating the champ for 23 minutes is a good reason for a rematch.

by naturalshadow on Aug 9, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

NNR you’ve always been delusional about Silva and I see this hasn’t changed, even after he was horribly exposed. Sonnen stays chest on chest for 2 more minutes in that fight you have a new MW champion and this conversation is moot. Soares is just protecting Silva and dodging comp because he knows Silva will lose the rematch. If there was EVER an instance of fight ducking this is it.

Yep, Jay, they are playing dodgeball! Silava may have won the match, but Sonnen won the fight! With all due respect tp the Maniacs that are refusing an istant rematch, it’s only because they dont like Chael and they know what happens in a rematch! AS WILL LOSE! He will come in scared of losing to Sonnen and it will mess his mental game up! After a fight like that, why wouldnt anyone wanna see em go at it again? Sonnen has Andersons number! Plain and simple! And next time they meet, he’s gonna finish dialing it!

by finish dialing it

do you mean get subbed again? Chael has consistently proven that he gets subbed by guys with good jits. I don’t really see it going much different. Chael will either get TKO’d early, or get tired again and get subbed. No controversy. He tapped. I don’t care how “close” he came. This isn’t horseshoes. Close, controversial decision, yes, agree with an instant rematch. Fight where a dude tapped. Work your way back up. Maybe Chael will learn something from this, namely, sub defense.

"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."

by Deuce02 on Aug 9, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Holy shit! I dont know how that posted 4 times! lol

I think Chael knows he can beat AS and would be less careless 2nd time around! However, AS could ko him, i guess! But, he didn’t exactly outshine Chael on the feet! And the whole “my rib was ouchie” thing, true or not, didnt stop AS from throwing vicious strikes when he was able to! He just didnt get that many chances BECAUSE Sonnen went after him, grabbed him, and BEAT HIS ASS and made him look like a third grade bitch! Props to AS for surviving! Tough dude! He took that ass whippin’ lile a man! But, at the end of the day, it was still a bad ass whipping!

by Danas A Crossdresser on Aug 9, 2010 4:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

and Sonnen still lost...

I agree with Deuce, A decisive finish doesn’t warrant an immediate rematch. Let Chael fight another good jits guy and then if he wins without getting subbed he can have another crack at Silva.

I personally believe Vitor beats Silva anyway, I’m not a fan of either of these guys, there is just something telling me that Vitor’s hand skills with his speed and power are going to catch Silva.

by RayRayJr on Aug 9, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Vitors skills play right into the spiders web!

AS will finish him in the first! And im not saying they SHOULD give CHael an instant rematch! Im saying i would like to see it!

by Danas A Crossdresser on Aug 9, 2010 6:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

besides, AS should wanna second shot at doing better!

Why not? Why does he care who he fights at this point? He’s bitchslapped everybody until Chael came along, and bitchslapped him! Chael is the ONLY fighter he has anything to prove against! And regardless of what some may say, he DOES need to prove he can beat Chael despite his good fortune of being able to capitalize on one mistake in a 20+ minute fight! A true champ would want to be sure! And i believe AS is a true champ! But, Soares is a bitch!

by Danas A Crossdresser on Aug 9, 2010 6:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

needs to prove if he can beat Chael? I don't think we watched the same fight.

He showed why he was a true champ.. He had his opportunity to finish the fight and did.. That defines a champion to me at least. Great heart , and a good finish.

by RayRayJr on Aug 9, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Theres a thin line between beating someone and winning! It might be too “deep” of thinking for some to grasp. But the line can exist! And does here! AS is a good champion! He does have heart! But, you gotta admit, Chael made hom look like an amateur for over 4 rnds! Then, Chael beat himself by becoming overzealous! He could’ve ran the whole 5th rnd like Silva had been doing lately! But, he kept after Silva! Kept beatong on him until he fed him a sub! Props to Silva for taking Advantage! Chael woll be champion soon, though!

by Danas A Crossdresser on Aug 10, 2010 2:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Good fortune?

Good fortune in the fight game amounts to your opponent slipping, falling, and knocking himself unconscious. That’s about it.

There are no such things as lucky punches or, for god sakes, lucky Jujitsu triangle chokes from your back against an Olympic level wrestler while getting punched in the face for half an hour.

WTF?!?

by dave901 on Aug 10, 2010 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

dave, take off your Silva Glasses for a sec...

Silva got LUCKY.

LUCKY in the end when Chael had a brainfart….It happens.

If anything, Chael proved that HE’S THE “BEST” OF THE TWO in that Ring that night. He said in the Hype-up video leading up to the fight, in regards to Silva : “He is an excellent fighter….But I am the Best!” AND HE PROVED IT.

Silva kept his title but he merely ESCAPED with it. He knows that Sonnen OWNS his ass. And he shouldn’t be satisfied until he gets a rematch to re-establish his dominance.

by BrockRocks on Aug 11, 2010 2:43 AM EDT up reply actions

One was a slip

Even chael said he slipped, rogan too. And when he got “rocked” in the first round he stood up dropped his hands, stuck his chin out and let sonnen hit him in the face like 4 times I don’t think he was rocked too badly…but sonnen did freaking man handle the dude. I’d rather see vitor fight him tho. Rather see a guarantee fight finished than 25 more minutes of chael laying on silva for a possible decision

Who? Vitor would be the most obvious to me. If not him, then a rematch. I can’t agree with a Vitor title shot coming off surgery and long layoff. Against the PFP best fighter in the world, he would be at a serious disadvantage. I don’t disagree with Soares, however, it’s not like there’s a long line of contenders waiting in the wings. I definately disagreed with the BJ Penn rematch. There’s a long list of guys who are contenders in that weight class.

Bit of both

Silva took some big shots on the chin when he first got caught and just dropped his hands (kinda like a leben zombie moment), but a genuine big hitter like Belfort would have sparked Silva out there I believe.

I agree. I kept thinking that Sonnen must not have much power behind those shots, because if he did, Silva would have been out. I think Silva felt his power, didn’t think he had much and just sat back and waited for an opportunity. I don’t think he could deal with the wrestling, but Sonnen lacks power in his punches obviously. A harder puncher would have taken Silva out with some of those same shots.

Rematch is still should happen

No one push AS like he has, and getting a sub in the last 2 minutes of a 25 minutes fight. Isn’t a dominte win, i think sliva doesn’t want to fight him again. Also some just needs to talk sense in to sonnen. He won 4 outta 5 rounds. His corner should have told him to run.

like AS did after the 3rd. in his last fight

I’m with you on the rematch in this case. In my opinion, a rematch is warranted in any sport when the competition is high level on both sides and the outcome could have gone either way. That being said, the UFC seems to be making a habit out of immediate rematches lately (machida, penn, etc…) I don’t think it makes sense unless the fight was exceptional (such as this fight). I didn’t think the Machida fight nor the Penn fight warranted an immediate rematch. They were close, but not exceptional in my opinion.

Big difference

that 5 minute domination was set up from a shot that rocked Brock standing, then Carwin follows it up and owns for 5 mins. In rd 2, Brock trucks him to the ground and chokes him out like it’s nothin. Anderson goes 4 rds, completely out skilled everywhere the fight went, then locks up a sub off his back due to Sonnen’s complacency.

So domination depends on the length of time? I could argue that Chael is less deserving because he gave it all he had for 20 straight minutes and couldn’t put it away….

by bobncc98 on Aug 9, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Domination depends on length of time in regards to where the fight takes place

A. Silva got 5 chances to start out on his feet and prove that he could defend the TD, out strike Sonnen and impose his game plan. He was unable to do so every chance he got. The difference between the 5-7 min match and the 23 min match is the opportunity to see these fighters in so many different positions using all their skills. Brock got rocked, he then falls and survives GnP from Carwin for one round. That’s all we saw, then Brock chokes him out right off the bat in rd 2. All you saw of that fight was a little bit of stand up followed by a lot of GnP, then a bull rush and a choke from Brock to finish. Brock proved the 1st rd was null and void.

In the A. Silva fight you saw Sonnen take him down at will again and again, GnP from top position, Rock Silva from the standing position. He took the fight to Silva and dominated in every position they went to battle.

Here is what I find funny...

Florian’s gameplan against BJ was to lean on him, make him feel his weight and try to tire him out. It was unsuccessful, but everyone applauded his attempt.

Fitch uses the exact same strategy, against a guy who didn’t make weight, and he is lambasted for it. It was a good gameplan and it got him the win, which is the point of these little matches. He is going to do it until someone stops him, like GSP did.

I have no problem with him grinding Alves out.

I do have a problem with him being on top for 15 minutes and not attempting or looking for 1 sub, and only throwing 60 punches.

Chael worked the same game plan as Fitch and threw 330 punches. That is the only thing that bothers me about Fitch. He’s not fighting, he’s wrestling only.

It will be interesting

I see GSP using a little more of his stand up but he will want to take KOS down and not take a chance as KOS has KO power and GSP really hasn’t shown any KO power, GSP may outstrike KOS all night but in MMA KOS is more dangerous becasue all it takes is one shot. No one has stopped GSP’s takedowns or ground game and I doubt KOS does either but I think he’ll put up a good fight for two or three rounds.

He is more proven than Serra at striking and better

Serra never KO anyone before GSP, KOS has a handfull on his record. Now KOS’s KO’s were not against elite fighters but the point is if he connects he can. Most likely not going to happen against GSP but there is a chance and thats all I’m saying.

Thiago Alves uses the guard to get off the ground

He doesn’t work subs and use jits to win a fight on the ground; all his ground skills go toward staying off the ground. Kos’s wrestling credentials are by far more credable then Alves jits game.

Agreed Kos is the more well-rounded fighter right now, which poses some interesting problems for GSP now. I would like to see Kos and Fitch go at it at some point. I think Dana is thinking if Kos should pull off the upset, Fitch will fight him, if GSP wins, the winner of Shields/Kampman gets the shot.

I can understand but when you got two guys like Fitch and Kos who are constantly ranked among the top 5 in the division and both have already had a crack at the current champ they need to fight eachother at some point to see who moves forward and who goes back to the drawing board.

I’m not a huge Brock fan, but I have to give it to him on that Carwin fight. He took some awesome shots for an entire round by a guy that knocked out every single person he fought in the 1st rd. He came back and took him out, albeit Carwin gassed. Lesnar gained my respect for that alone. That was one awesome HW fight. When you say Brock didn’t do anything special to win, let me know how special it is to take those shots from Carwin and still be standing?

GSP fight really interests me now

I always wanted to see that super fight and honestly they can leave titles out of it. Only reason i want a title invovled for 5 rounds.

I think this fight shows GSP wins that fight though, barring he does not get knocked out (thats a big if). We all believe since getting beat by serra GSP chin is gone or weak, and AS could put him to sleep. There is no way GSP going to get caught in a sub because he’s tired.

I also think sonnen deserves a rematch becuase if he did what AS did which is run for 2 rounds he would have won the fight like AS did vs maia (not saying maia would win if AS engaged) saying that AS coasted and sonnen coulda done the same.

Carwin should get a rematch

I completely agree, he’s only one in that division i think has a chance at beating Brock.

JDS is good infact he’s amazing but i think he’s 2 small and he has good Takedown defense, from roy but roy is not brock. I think he will get ragged doll’d if he doesn’t end it in the first round.

AS rematch with sonnen i push for more because i think he was the first person to really push AS and no one else in the division has really come close. With a smarter game plan sonnen wins.

by WallyMar on Aug 9, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Rematch

I think carwin and sonnen should get a rematch. Silva is my favorite fighter, and he was challenged saturday. The difference between sonnen and the rest of andersons opponents is soonen had controlled aggression. He went in with the confidence he could take as down. The stand up was okay at best. The ground and pound was excellent. Silva remained calm, and got the sub. If the rib injury is true I expect silva to run through sonnen this time… after the rematch GSP! Not a fan after grease gate, but I dont knock the guys skill. This gives gsp time to gain weight, and finish kos AGAIN. Belfort will have to fight a top 2-3 guy. The fight for 2011 is def. gsp vs anderson I wasnt a believer before but Sat closes the gap.

I'm calling bullshit with the Rib Injury story.

I think his Rib was broken DURING the Fight by Chael not during training. Otherwise, he would’ve been holding his side and/or been wincing a little(I watched him when he was shown in the lockeroom and all throughout his entrance and he looked as fresh as a daisy. No ill effects whatsoever…

It’s just one big DAMN EXCUSE they had ready in case that Sonnen got the best of AS(which he almost did). ED KNEW that AS sucks against REAL Wrestlers so he already put on the Spin-Cycle for the possibility of AS losing or looking bad….

Hendo is not a real wrestler?

Sonnon cant hold a candle to Hendos accomplishments. in 5 years we will ask who was that guy that gave anderson trouble? Like roy Jones vs Griffith. I agree the rib injury may be suspect but since he is out for 6 months, you’d think Zuffa would need proof of an xray, and not just a doctors excuse. I think he may have hurt his rib in training but sonnen cracked it. I dont think anderson is scared of any fighter. Look at the guys he has beat & fought

Well it's a matter of opinion...

Chael deserves a rematch in a lot of peoples eyes… Mine included… If AS is the GREATEST P4P champ ever then he should be saying he would rematch him since he looked like absolute shit for 99.5% of the fight….

Give him the rematch and make Vitor fight Okami or hell even Leben… Make him get a legitimate win at 185!

That Fight showed GSP would win

unless AS landed a shot, GSP would win.. GSP wouldn’t gas and get caught in a triangle since he easily sat in ton of ppls guard and getting caught in a triangle in the 5th is part skill (AS is very talented) Also part being tired all that sweat all you would have to do is posture up and break it or slip up before it’s ever locked in.

by HappyLittleTreez on Aug 9, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

i see both sides of this argument. it’s also about running a business though. would having a rematch give a huge buyrate? hell yes. brock wasn’t worthy of the title fight he got, but because ufc is a business first and charity last, we got what we got. ufc listens to its fans at least, which is why we thankfully never got franklin/ hendo 2. great fighters, but not a rematch anyone was clamoring for. but i’m getting off point. to not capitalize on the ONE fighter that finally brought it to anderson seems a waste. belfort seems to be cut from the same cloth, and he has real knock out power. i’m betting they’ll go with belfort first. chael needs to learn more bjj (he knew some according to 2 gracies who broke down the ending), and i don’t see them making belfort wait BECAUSE chael did tap. he lost. no controversy. any way you slice it, he did lose. i like both guys, and i thought that fight was amazing to watch. watched it twice. so i’m not hating on either party. but fighters are in this to win or lose. and when you lose, you have to build yourself back up, even if it’s a little. and unfortunately, even if you dominated the most feared fighter for 4.75 rounds in a fight of the yr candidate.

Some people simply will never be good at BJJ.

It’s like for example when people say if Manhoef trained with Jacare or Marcelo for two years……no, there are been many talented strikers who’ve been studying more than a decade in MMA yet still get tapped after one takedown. From Gilbert Yvel to pete spratt to bang ludwig. My point is that some people just don’t get it and Chael is one of them. That’s why a Vitor fight makes more sense now (at least if he fought the way he did in 02 or a GSP fight because the TD is there and he won’t get subbed). No need for rematch here.

I can see why people would campaign for an immediate rematch.

Chael was literally 90 seconds away from winning all 5 rounds and taking the belt from the so-called PFP best fighter in the world, and he slipped up.
If he had of gotten caught in the 3rd or 4th round, then I can see why an immediate rematch isn’t neccessary. But when it comes down to the very last minute, literally, then that’s different, IMO.
I say give Chael another shot. He’ll get the job done properly next time.

I’m not sure Dana cares who we all think should fight Silva next. This is a business decision plain and simple. If we all remove ourselves from the emotional debate as fans, we’d have to see the benefits in an immediate rematch. The Passion in this very debate speaks to one reason Dana might go for it. Fans are stoked about the whole thing one way or the other. If I was even thinking about allowing a rematch I’d announce it quick.

I don't like Soars but I agree this him here

How many times have we seen a fighter at the brink of defeat only to pull a sub or ko out of there ass in the end? I don’t think I’ve heard of an immediate rematch with those guys, why? Bottom line is when a guy is finished there is NO controversy like a spit decision or a obvious bad decision ex lyoto/shogun 1 or gsp/penn 1 etc.

Fedor is still the man. This is only his first real loss, and most likely his last of his career, he won't lose again.

by nathang on Aug 9, 2010 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

That's true

But it is different with Anderson Silva. Silva has looked invincible ever since he first stepped into the octagon. Then Chael destroyed him for that entire fight up until that submission. I’m not sure if I want to see an immeidate rematch but I certainly want to see another rematch. I think Vitor should have at least one middleweight fight before he fights for the title.

There are to many hypocrites in here

AS says he has a rib injury and all of a sudden everyone believe him? This is no different than BJ Penn and Tito Ortiz and anyone else saying that after a fight. IT is BS if you get in the ring excuses are out the door. The fact it AS had his butt handed to him for 4 1/2 rounds but he pulled out the win. I don’t want to hear how he was injured thats just crap. He found a way to win as all great champions do. How did Ed Soares become a spokesman? He is a translator that has grown into something much more. I hate Ed he needs to keep his thoughts to himself as they have no place in this. I want to see Vitor fight him next and see Chael fight Maia in a rematch. If Chael deserves a rematch he must earn it by beating someone who tooled him.

An immediate rematch is asking a bit too much...

But I agree if they can’t find a suitable opponent. Belfort is coming off a big lay off and hasn’t beaten anyone at middleweight since his “return”. I like Vitor, but I think he needs another fight before challenging Silva. Maybe the winner of Palhares/Marquardt, that would make sense. I don’t think the fight would be nearly as epic as Sonnen’s, but both guys are contenders. I could see a lot of hype for the fight especially if Marquardt finishes the fight in exciting fashion or if Palhares rips his leg off and continues his streak of subs. I got a bad thought though, what if Silva fights one more guy and then retires, and Sonnen doesn’t fight him again? I definitely want to see that rematch. Immediate, or down the road.

by Mustafa G on Aug 9, 2010 11:03 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

the only reason some of you don’t want a rematch is because silva has a really good chance of losing. silva is just like many of the top athletes who are full of themselves. he complains about being hurt when he gets his ass kicked instead of saying sonnen had a great gameplan and beat the hell out of me. silva’s run at being champ is coming to an end soon and it seems like all of you want him to have easy fights instead of someone who can actually beat him. get off the dudes nutsack. let him fight vitor after his long lay off and beat him and then lose his belt to sonnen. if vitor was healthy he would lose it to him anyway.

SONNEN LOST BY TAPPING OUT IE, QUITING

IF ANDERSON SILVA IS FULL OF HIMSELF THAN HOW DID HE REACH DEEP WITHIN HIMSELF TO PULL THE WIN.HE COULD HAVE BROKE SONNENS ARM AND DIDN’T, THAT SAYS ALOT ABOUT TRUE CHARACTER. SONNEN LOST BY WAY OF GIVING UP, NOT SILVA.

by Armando Cruz on Aug 12, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Sonnen deserves a rematch

But not necessarily an instant rematch. He may have to fight Vitor for the belt though, then AS. Can’t blame ES for not wanting the rematch, must have been tourture for him to watch his boy get whupped up on for 23 mins. I know I wouldn’t want to see my boy get pummeled like that, only to have to fight the same guy again in a few months. But just because he couldn’t finish him doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a rematch, I think what Sonnen did to AS warrants any talk of a rematch for sure.

by gordyOrr on Aug 9, 2010 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

I Agree With This Guy

I don’t care if Anderson caught him in the middle of the 1st or the end of the 5th, the fact is, Anderson caught him, just like a lot of good BJJ guys caught him and regardless of the 1st 23 minutes there is 1 thing in the fight Anderson did to Chael that Chael couldn’t do to Anderson, make him quit. Chael needs to earn a rematch. Just because he came closer than anyone to winning than anyone doesn’t equal a win guys.

Since I Sounded Pretty One Sided

My point is that Chael should be a the top and closer to a rematch, but not immediate. He was still submitted, it wasn’t a close decision or anything like what was used to give Shogun an instant rematch. Personally, I don’t EVER believe in an instant rematch other than the cases of a long time champ getting a rematch with whoever dethrones him.

Anderson is not even close to being P4P best

He showed why he is the most over hyped champion in ufc history. The first good wrestler he faced destroyed him. He was exposed like GSP does to everyone he fights. If anderson was to fight anyone at 205 that can wrestle he would be destroyed. Sonnen made anderson look amature at best.

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Depends On Your Angle

I can spin it to say Anderson has more heart than any fighter in UFC history because even after being destroyed for 23 minutes he found a lighning quick submission and never gave up.

You are going to hate, if you want to be a hater. Just how it is.

Not a great comparison

Shields has great td’s and hendo didn’t really go looking for any, just looked to load up the big right hand.

He does, but he’s fallen in love with his right fist, rather than using his wrestling in any meaningful way. Not that I blame him, I love my right fist too.

Use the bloody reply button!

Your basically saying Dan henderson’s wrestling is no good, basing it off one fight against Jake Shields, where all he did was look to load up the big right hand all night? Incredible!!

by OJR on Aug 9, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly!

No he didn’t. He used his really good wrestling to stay out of control, on bottom, and on the recieving end of a 170lb mans pillow fisted attack. For a LOSS

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

Totally missing the point again

As P-Dub said above, henderson has fallen in love with the big right hand and doesn’t use his wrestling anymore. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have good “MMA Wrestling”. he used his “MMA Wrestling” in the Anderson Silva fight and controlled the first round, just got caught standing in the second.

Point being Sonnen aint the firs of his kind that Silva has fought!

by attakdog on Aug 9, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Then why was it anderson seemed as though he was lost

sure he kept trying to set up the arm bar and the triangle but anyone, black belt or not tries thoes subs from the bottom. Dont get me wrong, I think anderson is dam good, and am impressed with how he pulled the sub but I am all in all disappointed with his performance. he looked EXACTLY like hardy, alves, kos, fitch, hendo did when they fought good mma wrestlers. If you cant admit that all of those guys need better tdd than you are delusional.

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Point being Anderson is not the best fighter in the world

If he wouldnt dodge the good wrestlers you would have learned that before sat. night

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

HE STILL WON AND DID NOT DODGE ANYONE

HE FOUGHT A GREAT WRESTLER AND WON ON THE GROUND. SONNENS FACE WAS ALL CUT UP NOT SILVAS . SILVA COULD HAVE BROKE SONNENS ARM BUT HE DIDNT. OBVIOUSLY HE DIDNT CARE TO FIGHT SONNEN IN THE PAST CAUSE HE WAS FIGHTING BETTER FIGHTERS AT PRIDE AT THE TIME. ALSO JUST BECAUSE HE DIDNT WANT TO FIGHT SOMEONE DOESNT MEAN HE’S DODGING THEM. IT’S SAYING YOUR A COWARD CAUSE YOU DID’NT WANT TO GO OUT AND HANG. YOU JUST DIDN’T FEEL LIKE HANGING.

by Armando Cruz on Aug 12, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

what are the other fights dan used his wrestling to win?

When they fight real high level mma wrestlers the outcome speaks for its self. Trying to deny that is foolish. GSP does it to everyone, fitch does it to everyone, sonnen does it to everyone.
You made because your heros dan henderson and anderson silva have NO tdd, and lack the ability to get off their back. If I claimed to be a good wrestler, and couldnt get off my back for over 20 min I might rethink my skill set (and quit calling myself a wrestler)

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

I presume you're trolling now

So because Dan doesn’t dry hump people to death he doesn’t have good MMA wrestling????

GSP, Fitch, Sonnen instantly go for the TD because they have limited power in the standup whereas Hendo has huge KO power and a granite jaw, so has another string to his bow and opts to stand and trade nowadays.

Hendo’s not a hero of mine at all, I was merely pulling you up when you said Silva’s never fought a wrestler before. Suddenly you’re backpeddling telling us you meant “MMA wrestler”, which apparently hendo doesn’t fall into which is just laughable. Keep digging

by attakdog on Aug 9, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought you were one of the more intelegent posters

Boy was I wrong. I didnt think I would need to spell out the obvious. Just because you wrestled 20 years ago, and used your wrestling 5 years ago doesnt mean it is top level. Why defend hedo for having a terrible game plan. Look where his right hand got him. In the minor leagues, beat up by a ww. If his mma wrestling was “good” like you say he would have beat the smaller man.

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

There are a ton ef excuses keep looking man

Convince me that anderson did good. The sub was good the rest of the 23 min looked hideous.

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

TONS OF EXCUSES

REGARDLESS OF WHAT HE DID FOR 23 MINUTES HE STILL LOST. IF THE BEATING HE IMPOSED ON ANDERSON WAS SO HIDEOUS , WHY DID ANDERSON WIN? THAT SHOULD QUESTION SONNENS STRIKING POWER. TO HIT SOMEONE OVER AND OVER AND NOT KNOCK THEM SHOWS HOW WEAK HIS STRIKES ARE. YOU CAN THROW A FAST PUNCH WITH NO POWER BEHIND IT AND KNOCK ANYBODY OUT IF YOU HIT THEM ON THE JAW WHERE THE NERVE ENDING IS, ITS PROVEN SCIENTIFIC FACT.

by Armando Cruz on Aug 12, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh yeah it is!

Ask Dan why he doesn’t wanna use his wrestling anymore, I cant answer that!! Maybe he prefers the flashy KO, there’s rumours of a dodgy back, but just because he doesn’t use it so much now doesn’t mean he isn’t an “MMA Wrestler” That’s my point!!!

I dont care about AS, I hate him, for whatever reason he was awful last night. I only came here to tell you Silva has fought a wrestler before and you’re trying to dismiss Dan as such which is just stupid!!

Oh I will

I was spelling it out for you because you dont seem to understand.
Dan and Mark kerr are both in the same catagory. Has-been mma wrestlers.
If you want me to admit Dan had good wrestling years ago then there you are. He did. However he does not anymore. He hasnt been the wrestler he remember him as since comming to the UFC.

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

ANDERSON IS A GRAPPLER AND STRIKER NOT A WRESTLER

AFTER 23 MINUTES HE SLAPPED A TRIANGLE AND ARM BAR. THAT IS HIGH LEVEL JUJITSU AND REQUIRES NO RETHINKING OF A SKILL SET. SONNENS FACE WAS ALL CUT UP, WHAT ABOUT SILVA? 23 MINUTES OF WEAK GROUND POUND WAS IMPLEMENTED. WHAT IS STRONG WRESTLING WITHOUT STRONG STRIKING ON THE GROUND? A WASTE OF ENERGY AND TIME. ALL SONNENS FIGHTS COME BY WAY OF DECISION. THAT SAYS ALOT ABOUT HIS STRIKING POWER. YOU CAN HIT ANYONE ON THE NERVE ENDING OF THEIR CHIN AND KNOCK THEM DOWN WITH A WEAK PUNCH. ITS ALL ABOUT THE SWEET SPOT.

by Armando Cruz on Aug 12, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

for the old generation Dan's mma wrestling was good

for the new generation its not. if you need proof look at his fights in the past 2 years.
I guess your stuck thinking what was 10 years ago is still valid today

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

My point is Anderson was finally forced to fight a wrestler

We all saw what happen in that fight. Dan and his “good” mma wrestling won one round against anderson, then got destroyed. Sonnen used his “legit” wrestling and won four and a half rounds. There is a little difference. Sonnen’s mma wrestling is better.

Case in point: The first GOOD mma wrestler Anderson faced destroyed him!
just accept it. Dan used to have good wrestling, now he is old and the new generation exposes it

by DeRbHeAn on Aug 9, 2010 12:22 PM EDT reply actions

He fought a good wrestler but sonnen still lost

It doesn’t matter if sonnen won 4 rounds he lost the 5th by submission. AS showed that he could win THROUGH A DIFFICULT SITUATION, WHICH I BET, NONE OF YOU COULD DO IF ANY OF YOU WHERE FACED WITH A CHALLENGE LIKE THAT. IF ANDERSON SILVA GOT DESTROYED THAN WHY DID HE WIN? DAN HENDERSON IS GETTING OLD BUT HE STILL WINS FIGHTS. IT’S AMAZING THAT THE COUCH POTATOES OF THE WORLD BEHAVE AS IF THEY KNOW WHAT IT IS TO BE AN ATHLETE/FIGHTER. IF AS WANTED TO BREAK SONNENS ARM HE COULD HAVE TO MAKE A POINT. REGARDLESS OF THE SHOW HE PUTS ON HE ALWAYS UPSETS THE SPECHATERS WHO WANT TO SEE HIM LOSE.

Shut your face already Ed

Dude, if anyone deserves another shot at Anderson, it’s Chael. He beat his ass like no one else until he got subbed. Not sure if it needs to be an immediate rematch, but Chael needs to be in the mix in the very, very near future. Plus what is he saying about Chael being on Anderson for 23 minutes. He’s the only one that’s been able to be on him (AND WINNING) for 23 minutes. Then he says he couldn’t finish Anderson. Anderson doesn’t even try to finish his fights. I have to admit. I didn’t think Chael could do even near what he was able to pull off on Saturday. What he did was impressive. Even better, we got no Anderson Silva air dancing/showboating this fight, which was great. I’m still an Anderson Silva fan, but I’m glad he got his ass handed to him for almost the whole fight – but I’m definitely NOT an Ed Soares fan. Shut the hell up Ed!

by Taf Reyes on Aug 9, 2010 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

ED also said this before they even fought.

He was saying Chael doesn’t deserve a shot but obviously he showed he belonged in there. Anderson seemed really hesitant as well about granting Chael a rematch as well in the post fight presser when asked the question.

As for Ed’s comments"
“Anderson got a few bumps and bruises, but let’s be realistic, you’re on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn’t finish him?”

Anderson couldn’t do anything to him either in those 23min. As for the Filho fight Chael got an immediate rematch and pretty much schooled him.

Either way it was a great night of fights.

ED SHUT YOUR MOUTH !!!!! Anderson couldn’t finish Leites or Mia. What does that say about him ? Anderson has been exposed just like Liddell everyone now knows how to beat him. Sonnen should get a rematch ASAP. Chael owned Silva for 23 minutes, that has never been done before. I think that earns him another chance. Franklin got a rematch and he never did anything in the first fight to show he could hang in with Silva. WAR CHAEL !!!!!!!!!!

silva sonnen rematch

Sonnen unexpectedly DOMINATED until he got tapped, he beat him standing and on the ground and then he got tapped. Silva snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. great , dramatic fight. But …… The Champ FINISHED – no decision victory. Silva should fight whoever is now at the the top of the list of contenders…and so on and so on until he gets beat. Sonnen was great (even though I am not a fan of the ground and pound fighters) but he needs to get back in line and tighten up his game. I am definitely in favor of a re-match down the road. Unfortunately MONEY will ALWAYS win and with 750,000 to 1 million people paying to view this fight and probably more for the re-match, Dana will do the same thing you would do …GET THE DOUGH!!
