he better train a lot off his back because that is where the fight will end up

no matter who wins between brock/cain i believe they will both put JDS on his back, if they dont they will get owned on the feet

JDS showed a lot of flaws in his game..

as much as i hate Cain, but his striking is good enough to land on JDS who showed absolutely no striking defense besides a few brief moments.

his cardio is not 5 round worthy and his punches can’t put away everybody apparently.

I was giving JDS a 40% chance against Lesnar before last night, I’d drop that to a 20% now. and even less against Cain( Which won’t matter cus Lesnar is going to smash Cain.)

i agree. if he can't put nelson away there is not much of a chance he can take brock out unless it's the perfect punch

i would give him only a 10% chance of beating lesnar and carwin would beat him easily too imo.

man people are acting like he just won a controversial split decision

no he won a dominant performance, one judge scored it 30-26

maybe you should give props to nelson’s chin rather than blame it on JDS inability to put nelson away

I totally agree.

You have to give Nelson all the credit in the world for taking that sort of punishment. Only because Brock took Carwins punches lying on the floor, that is no guarantee that he is able to take the same sort of punishment Nelson did. Uppecuts effect the head and brain in a completely different way. Brock wouldn’t necessarily have been able to withstand all of those shots just because Carwin couldn’t take him out. And Carwin was wobbled by on shot from Gonzaga, so I seriously doubt that he would be able to take out Dos Santos that easily after taking a few to the head, and if it got to the second round I wouldn’t give him much chance at all.

by Ade on Aug 8, 2010 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

His striking defense was just fine.

He was angling and countering inside the pocket awesomely. It’s just that Nelson would open up and when JDS tried to land his left strike first, Nelson would beat him to the punch once or twice with an overhand. Also it happened when he stopped boxing and was trying other things like knees etc… They grazed him but he wasn’t fazed. I like though that his technique was consistent and crisp in all three rds. He was tired yet everything was clean. Also his hips man…fuck……Nelson was deep in on that double basically had the two knees wrapped up and touching each other but still couldn’t finish that TD. That impressed me more than a lot of the things we saw tonight.

The cage was the main reason that TD wasn't finished..

and im not saying Nelson doesn’t have a good chin, BUT he is able to be knocked out(Ala AA). So, it goes to show JDS couldn’t do it ( not from a lack of power, perhaps gassing to quickly going in for the kill).

Yes his offensive striking was technical the entire fight, but to discredit his defense so easily is not wise.. Good chin or not, if he gets caught cleanly like he will if he keeps it up, he’s gonna get hurt badly..

by RayRayJr on Aug 8, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem with and when he fights Brock...

Will be the takedown. JDS will not be big enough nor strong enough to stop it. Toss on Brock’s amazing top control and it will be a rough night for JDS. It is 1 thing to defend the takedown in training from a 200lb Mark Munoz and Machida, or a 240# Big Nog. It is a completely different game to defend the takedown when you are giving 40lbs and your normally long reach, is now short 4 inches.

how did nelson chin get better than when he fought arlvoski?

here is my question, if carwin hit nelson the same way he did lesnar it would be lights out and you know it. i give nelson mad props for surviving but jds has very little chance of beating lesnar when that fight happens. i think velasquez also could beat jds. the heavyweight division is better so i suggest santos lift some weights.

As far as judging AA’s power to JDS’s there are many factor how much weight did they get behind their punch’s, how tired were they, how tired was Roy? I think Roy is in better shape now than he was then?

Wolfman – Just because a fighter gets knocked out doesn’t always mean they cant take as good a shot ever again.

Take Fitch for example, he got ko’d early in his career and has never been ko’d since and he has been hit with some heavy shots.

Same applies with Alan Belcher, he got Tko’d early in his career and Tko’d against Jason day and has faced some heavy hitters since then and not been Ko’d

Valasquez had trouble with Kongos striking,

and it was his wrestling that saved him in that fight as well as Kongos idiotic strategy, If Dos Santos is able to stuff those takedowns and I am sure he will be able to stuff quite a few, Valesquez as good as his striking is, will be in for a very hard time. Santos does not need to sacrafice his speed by putting on weight. There are some really good match ups to look forward to, the fact that that the top three are capable of beating each other with all their different strengths makes it that much more exciting. Brock is starting to show he is not just a powerful wrestler, although some seemed to have him labelled as an MMA even before he subbed Carwin. If he beats Valesquez and Cain, I may well start to believe the hype. I still have a difficult time not seeing him getting subbed by the end of the second round against Josh Barnett though. I have always disliked Dana, but the fact that he never took Barnett back after allowing other cheats to still compete still pisses me off. I am also still pissed with Barnett for ruining the greatest fight that never was, although the way that all went down and hardly anything was said about it, did make me wonder if Barnett, Affliction and the Dana\ UFC staged that whole fiasco.

by Ade on Aug 9, 2010 4:26 AM EDT up reply actions

JDS has yet to face anyone with a solid takedown...

Nelson has good takedowns but it is far from the takedown offense that Cain has. Cain has a quick and powerful shot. The other factor you are missing is that JDS was tired midway through the second round. Cain in his 3 round fight with Kongo did not look tired at the end of the fight. I think Cain has the cardio advantage. His striking is much improved as well. Many people considered Big Nog one of the better boxers at HW and Cain beat him to every punch and put him out. I am not saying he is on JDS’s level, but he does not need to be. He just needs to be good enough to set up the takedown.

If carwin couldn't put lesnar away who says Cain can?

Let’s face it Cain KO’d Nog…. So did Frank Mir.. And we didn’t see Mir or carwin (although pretty close) knock out lesnar. And I doubt Cain can out wrestle Lesnar he’s too big.

Also I believe Anderson Silva is a robot… All those punches and not one drop of blood! He is really a T1000 and the UFC is a cover up for Skynet testing their robots in combat.

Cain Velasquez will break all the UFC HW title defense records and go onto become a legend. But b4 that starts he will face Dos Santos in what will be his toughest fight during the reign. It will go down as the greatest HW mma title fight ever. 1 of the few to go 5 rounds. And though I think Cain wins by wrestling… I think Dos Santos will hit him good enough times that there will be some scary moments where Cain will have to show his heart. Plus, Cain will land some good strikes to. I’d even expect Dos Santos will get a 2nd shot at Cain down the road.

come on illy...JDS had problems with Roy Nelsons tough chin not his size,

Brock has holes in his game too and JDS can exploit them as Brock’s holes are in his striking game. Brock will be beaten by a fighter with a superior chin and gas tank.

The great GSP said it best, size/strength is overcome by technique/skill and he is right.

Brock will get his and I believe Cain is the one to do it. I like JDS but his punch defense is horrible and he keeps his hands low….anyone watching tape will see that.

that is why andy will stay at 185.

there are too many guys at 205 that are good wrestlers or guys that can get you to the canvas and mount you. jones, evans, bader and phil davis. i would love to see rua completely healthy fighting a standup fight with a.s. i would like to see if andy could grab one of rua’s kicks and drop him like he did irvin. james irvins kick was weak though so he got what he deserved. rua’s kicks are very hard and think he could inflict some serious damage and he says he would fight silva. hopefully andy destroys belfort and then dana says you cleaned out the division so you need to move up. he either accepts or retires or goes someplace else. it’s not like he sold the ppv. it was soonen who did all the smack talk so if the ppv #’s are big thank soonen, not silva.

I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson (the winner will be jds)where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. Well Sonnen has a tough chin and other wrestlers are not gauranteed the same and might fight at 205 himself

It’s hard to say by one fight, Anderson fights once at 205 and opinions might be that he is the best 205er as well. I think the 205 division is tougher myself but I think Sonnen and Silva could be top contenders. Sonnen vs. Evans? Silva vs Evans?

Hey Puck..... I am inclined not to bet on JDS either after last night's showing

and I like JDS alot however he can be countered so easily if someone where to stand in the box with him. His punch defense is weak and since he clearly chooses to stand I believe someone will catch him like the way Machida finally got countered by Shogun,

Warrior you have a right to be concerned for sure

I was a little concerened myself when one of JDS’s trainer was stating that there was a possiblity that he may try out boxing, remind anyone of AA? Now JDS is a great striker no doubt but his striking D didn’t look as good as it has been and I believe that is becasue there is to great of focus on JDS’s stand style that may be better for boxing but for MMA not so much.

You take guys like Roy who don’t have as good striking but have the power to KO almost anyone and have the striking D that goe with it. When training for boxing your more willing to open up because the boxing gloves allow for more strikes to be thrown and less damage takin wich is what I think we may of seen from JDS. A hook in boxing may be thrown and landed many times in MMA one hook can knock you out, a jab in boxing does very little were in MMA it can bust you open your opponent with one stiff jab, and of coarse a haymaker in boxing can knock someone out but is not near as effective as in MMA when landed. I think we have seen the same thing with AA and if JDS is training for boxing I think his MMA game will sufffer.

You look at AA’s match against Fedor, he looked good and appeared to have the uper hand but Fedor threw four or five overhand right bombs that missed before he caught AA once, as Hendo did against Bisping . JDS needs to mix things up and be so predictable and he needs to focus on MMA rather than boxing when standing.

Now with saying that JDS does not have a glass chin like AA and will do better but he has shown he can be hit and if someone like Carwin hits him with just a straight his night will be over and if he fights like he did Carwin will connect once and thats all Carwin needs against almost anybody besides Brock.

cain>jds

cain’s striking is a little better than jds in my opinion and his wrestling is far superior, only thing jds has on him is a height/size advantage

JDS IS NOT READY FOR LESNAR,

JDS IS NOT READY FOR LESNAR, BUT I WILL SAY THE 1ST HEAVYWEIGHT TO KEEP IT STANDING WITH LESNAR WILL BECOME THE NEW CHAMPION.LESNARS STAND UP WAS EXPOSED IN HIS LAST 2 FIGHTS.HE HAD TO TAKE MIR DOWN IN THEIR REMATCH TO WIN B/C HE WAS GETTING TAGGED. THE SAME WITH CARWIN TO. BUT THAT IS THE KEY TRYING TO KEEP LESNAR FOR GETTING THE TAKE DOWN WITH HIS AWESOME WRESTLING BACK GROUND.

too bad that brock will be able to take down any heavyweight he wants.

what was soonen last night? he took down silva 3 out of 7 times? well brock just has to do it once in five times and it’s lights out.

Roy had a good game plan for Junior but couldn’t work that out. I enjoyed his chin and attitude along the fight. He landed good punches but those weren’t sufice to put Dos Santos down.
I’ve seen Cigano’s performances and noticed his capacity of deal with the hits he suffers. On his boxing, it’s good for MMA but he ought to improve combinations and use more kicks. It’s not difficult finding what he is going to do…
Once again we handn’t the chance to see his ground game despite the attempt to take Nelson down. I wish I will be surprised with his jiu-jitsu level.
