people can criticize the power of Chaels GnP

but not the intention…over 300 strikes from the ground, you can’t accuse the guy of not trying to finish the fight or of Lay N Pray.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It is funny though...

300 strikes from the ground and Silva’s face was barely swollen.

by leerage on Aug 8, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

facial structure

a lot of it has to do with the bone structure of the face. Guys like Silva and BJ have very round smooth face bones with very little subcutaneous roughage and it makes them come out looking cleaner cause there’s no sharp bone angles beneath the skin to cause tearing or swelling.

Guys like Chael, Forrest, Bonnar, & Mir have sharp cheekbones & eyebrows that make them cut easy and more uneven subdermal tissue that makes them swell uglier.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Also Chael has no power

He never finishes, he has more decisions than fitch, even counting last night.

His only finishing tool is his GnP and he doesn’t have the power to do it most of the time, which gives BJJ guys the maximum time to catch him.

Dropped

implies you knock someone down, I don’t recall anyone getting knocked down, oh wait, aside from Chael getting his head split and knocked down.

it’s one thing to read a guys record and assume he has no power but do you really not recall silva getting staggered by sonnen during standup? i do.
and you know that cut came from silvas ground game, so i’m confused at the point you’re trying to make. it’s cool to not be a fan of sonnens but don’t delve into nuthugging ;)

by Andy Cool on Aug 8, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

sonnen has 26 wins....only 3 by tko...so NO the dude has no power

so what he wobbled andy…if that had been ANY other fighter in the world it would have ko’d andy….

if you punch a man 300 times and he still taps you then something is seriously wrong…

if i laid down and let my 10 year old nephew punch me 300 times im sure id go unconcious at some point

by HellaHectic on Aug 8, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s probably better off to assume because you can get knocked out by your nephew that your nephew automatically has more strength than Sonnen because he didn’t KO Silva.

Anyways don’t forget that no one has ever knocked out Anderson Silva. But for a bunch of people saying he has no power when Sonnen has clear victories on his record (which is where I’m going to guess a lot of people are getting their deep and special info on Sonnen) that indicate otherwise? That’s just fucking retarded.

by Andy Cool on Aug 8, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Sonnen does more damage from guard then any other UFC fighter

on a consistant basis. When has Silva ever been KO’d? Thats right never. Yeah Chael doesn’t have that many finishes, but he bears the shit out of tough guys. And to say he has no power is retarded. You could hear those shots and they were damaging. I could understand maybe if you question his killer instinct, but the guy can punch and punch to hurt. Chael hit Anderson a lot harder than Hendo on the ground and he’s legendary for his power.

I remember that

In the first round I also remember Anderson immediately standing up dropping his hands , sticking his chin out and lettin chael punch him 3 or 4 times in the face to prove he wasn’t phased…

I’ve always wanted to know that… but these guys can also take a punch and at best be dazed they never go out…

If Chael didn't get caught in that triangle?

Where would Anderson be in P4P? It’s not like he was even competetive in this fight until the triangle…..he got his ass handed to him.

good question.

I’ve been telling you guys that Silva was avoiding wrestlers and guys his own size. Now you see why! I still think he’s a TOP 5 er, but no way is he ahead of GSP or Fedor.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Avoiding wrestlers maybe, but guys his own size???

Hasn’t he fought a few times at 205? Or am I making that up.

FEDOR WON'T FIGHT ANYONE IN THE TOP 5 EVER AGAIN !!!

I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying Silva needs to fight people his own size

He consistently makes weight at 185 (see all 7, technically 8 title defenses). If anybody should be talking about a guy moving up in weight.. it should Thiago Alves.

Avoid? It’s in most fighters interests to avoid wrestlers, but at this stage I don’t think Silva get’s much of a choice on who he fights. Seems like champs get a lot of choices to make, but who the number 1 contender is doesn’t look like one of them. This is all conjecture on my part since I’m not privy to behind the scenes details like MMA contracts, bookings etc.

I don’t debate p4p rankings its pointless in my opinion but Fedor ahead of Anderson??? Fedor just got choked into submission in the first 3 min of a fight. Andy looked like shit but still survived a four round beatdown and still pull of the sub for the WIN.

by LOKIE on Aug 8, 2010 2:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Fedor would beat Silva to death if they were the exact same weight

Thats what p4p is about.

Fedor is and always has been ahead of silva.

by Lester The Pimp on Aug 8, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

lol you don't know that for a fact

for a fighter of Fedors class and especially considering his background, to be afraid to fight anyone goes against their very nature. So don’t talk like you know his fears. :P

by Andy Cool on Aug 8, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

So Fedor can lose and it doesn’t mean shit yet anderson takes a beating and still pulls out the w yet his status falls? Fedor had to tap in less than three min. Fuck pound for pound rankings anyway. Fedor is fast for a HW but how would do against a fast MW? You don’t know Fedor would beat him for sure

by LOKIE on Aug 8, 2010 6:22 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Fedor's got more viscious GnP than Sonnen, it's not hard to see the fight going almost the same except A. Silva taking harder shots

And I think with Fedor he got caught so fast; most people just consider it his own fault, and his own slip up that lost him the fight. With Sonnen/Silva, Chael beat the shit out of him for 4 and a half rds. It wasn’t just some fluke like a lot people think the Werdum win over Fedor was, it was a 20 min beating.

And I know what pound for pound is about I just choose to live in reality where there not the same weight. I don’t wanna argue a fantasy fight that’s like winning the special olympics. Even if you win you’re still retarded

by LOKIE on Aug 8, 2010 6:25 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Fedor and Silva *are* the same weight

Both of them walk around at 220 or so.

And…I don’t know if Fedor would beat Silva, mostly because I’m not 100% sure Fedor is as good a wrestler as Chael or GSP, and that’s what it takes (as we just saw) to nail Silva.

On the other hand…Chael outstruck Silva, so….hell knows.

by Vox on Aug 8, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

fedor is irrelevant. he is going to wait out 8 months until he fights werdum again. by then

lesnar would have beaten velasquez and jds and carwin would have beaten the people put in front of him so at best in 8 months fedor will 4th at best. since werdum already beat him he should be ahead of him and he is not in latest heavyweight rankings. both lesnar and carwin are better right now than fedor. jds i now think would get ko’d by fedor b/c if he can’t ko nelson he would not be able to ko fedor.

Look, can’t you guys fucking agree that Sonnen actually BROUGHT the fight he said he was going to bring to Silva (sans the victory) and that Silva beat his ass with Jiu-Jitsu when he needed to? What more is there to fucking argue about?

This bullshit about Sonnen not having punching power is just utter cage potato bullshit. Is that easier to say than giving Anderson Silva props for having a strong chin? If anything Sonnen used power to keep Silva on the mat for more than 4 rounds. Silva did NOT look great on the ground. His BJJ belt was looking like a joke for a while there, but where he looked awesome was when he was in desperation mode and when he locked in that triangle.

Pure skill and heart won last night and it had nothing to do with Sonnen being unprepared or weak. Silva is fucking skilled fighter.

by Andy Cool on Aug 8, 2010 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

silva has been exposed. he is coming up on i think 36 years old and his skills will deterioate like everyone else's

now everybody sees why he would not goto 205. jones and evans could control him on the ground and beat him and he knows that now. jones and rashad hit alot harder than soonen. i do give soonen props for doing pretty much what he said. he backed up the talk which made for an interesting fight. if the ppv buy was high it was b/c of soonen’s smack talk.

Sonnen is a much better wrestler than Rashad

and just as big if not bigger. I don’t think Rashad could have done what Sonnen did last night. Rashad defitely has more punching power and hand speed, but he doesn’t have the kind of top control that Sonnen has.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

he is taller, not bigger and i beg to differ who is the better wrestler.

so if soonen was a light heavyweight he would win the belt? when evans fights rua watch who wins the belt again. i even think bader would give andy problems at 205 but we know he is going stay at 185. peace.

He would have beat Forrest if that's what your asking.

And Rashad is not the wrestler Sonnen is. Rashad wrestled at 174 in college and with mixed success. Sonnen wrestled at 197 made All American and greco champ. He’s more accomplished and a better wrestler for MMA. I think it’s safe to say Sonnen has a bigger frame than Rashad. They’ve both redone their bodies to achieve optimum success in their weight classes, but Sonnen has the bigger frame, he’s just leaned out and Rashad has packed on muscle.

dude,

in a straight wrestling match Sonnen owns Rashad! Hell I think he beats him in MMA, so long as he doesn’t get caught with that big overhand shot of Rashad.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

well than soonen should move to 205 and take on the people rashad has.

it’s going to be funny when rashad wins the belt again when he faces rua. i’ll remeber everyone who has been on his case. same strategy he used vs page. stay low and keep hands up so rua can’t kick him in the thighs and just pounce at the right moment and gnp him. i would welcome a soonen/ evans fight and evans would be a -250 favorite too. as for the collegiate wrestling stuff lets looks at lesnar and a guy named kent conrad. lesnar is a beast and is a mma fighter and has the belt in ufc. conrad fights in bellator and i think trains with lesnar but is not a fighter. strictly a wrestler and i saw his last two fights and they were awful by anyone standards. conrad had the better stats in college or close what i’m saying is just b/c you have great collegiate ability does not mean it will translates to the cage. rashad is a proven commodity and has 1 loss in his whole career. not only will he get the belt again he would ko soonen and gnp silva. you guys just can’t admit that silva is (nearing 36 yo)and is now on the downside of his career, he knows it and says he won’t fight at 205 b/c he knows he would lose. stay safe at 185 and keep his legacy. peace.

why would he move up?

I wrestled at 112lbs for 4 years in high school, not because I was scared to move up, but there’s always a better chance of success competing at a lower weight. And Sonnen just destroyed the champ at 185 for 4 1/2 rounds and got caught. If he’s said he could move up to 205 and do well I understand. There were plenty of tournaments I felt I could have won if I was in the 119lbs bracket. You see guys win and become champ you think you can beat and it makes you wonder. But Sonnen will and should stay at 185.

you make some sense to me but as it says in your sig

maybe soonen should practice submission defense and he would have won the fight. i still give soonen mad props for the fight. he backed up the smack and if the ppv numbers come back big dana white should give him 1 % bonus for him. for every ppv. i can’t wait till silva does lose so all his shrineholders can have a big cryfest. peace.

And i agree the 185 division is lacking in wrestlers however i think the of all the wrestlers in the lhw only a few would pose huge problems for anderson (shad, bones and maybe page if he actually learned to use that brain of his)

Stats are misleading

There’s a big disparity there in the numbers but a lot of Chael strikes in guard were of the pitter patter variety which increased his FightMetric numbers but didn’t really do any damage. Best strikes of the match were really from Anderson’s side mostly and that short right elbow to Chael’s left eyebrow. By the way, no Anderson lover here. I was rooting big time for Chael. Yeah he’s somewhat one dimensional but he brought the fight to Anderson. Sometime few have done. Kudos to Chael. I just wish he’d be smarter with the sub defense.
