UFC 117 bonuses and awards for 'Silva vs Sonnen' PPV fights

Ufc81-bonus_medium

UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card, and it's probably no surprise who's leaving "Oaktown" with second sack of simoleons.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded middleweight competitors Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen "Fight of the Night" for their four-and-a-half rounds of action that saw "The Spider" endure a 20-minute ass kicking only to pull off a miraculous fifth round submission to steal the win.

And the choke that had Sonnen crying "uncle" was good enough to net the Brazilian a second bonus as his triangle qualified him for "Submission of the Night."

Also tapping his way to the bank was former welterweight champion Matt Hughes, who had Ricardo Almeida counting sheep just three minutes into the opening stanza. The captain of the H.I.T. Squad put the Gracie disciple on his keister with a left hook and followed it up with an unholy union of arm and neck.

Cha-ching.

In preliminary action, Stefan Struve got back to his winning ways with a bone-crunching knockout of Christian Morecraft that invested an additional sixty-grand into the "Skyscraper."

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 117:

Star-divide

Fight of the Night — Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen
Submission of the Night — Anderson Silva and Matt Hughes
Knockout of the Night — Stefan Struve

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

Still impressed with Sonnen...

and Anderson’s my fav fighter. He did back up his talk and Sivla was lucky that he pulled off that Sub at the end. When Silva said he injured his rib I wasn’t surprised cause he really didn’t move as good as he usually does.

Lesnar isn't the most skilled fighter but until somebody beats him he is the #1 HW in the world. It's obviously not Fedor and sure as hell isn't Werdum!

to sum up

this event was awesome

hughes’ sub was sick and won me some money

dos anjos’ gay injury lost me the previously won money, although he was looking like he was goin to lose anyway but so was anderson and we know how that turned out

how the fuck did nelson survive? his chin looked good

Please don't ever let Carwin fight Big Nog! It would result in death

Can't decide who I hate more, Penn or Edgar

i have to disagree with FOTN

nelson/dos santos should have received fotn

No way!

That belongs to Chael/Anderson all the way. JDS and Roy were gassed after round 1

the main event definitely lived up to the expectations

but if two fighters were awarded sub of the night then both fights should have received fotn

man, i kinda feel for cheal he was a couple minutes away from fulfilling his life long dream, but even in a loss he has done what no one could

i was entertained to say the least

by dia mette on Aug 8, 2010 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Chael will be back. He's proven that he's too good a fighter/wrestler.

His only problems have been getting caught in submissions….He’s never been knocked out in about 40+ plus fights I hear…..

He’s got a good chin(not Roy Nelson Steel but a good chin, nonetheless)

by BrockRocks on Aug 8, 2010 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Roy showed alot of heart but...

doesn’t have a steel chin he just kept a good guard. Arlovski tagged him.

Props to him for over coming though...

cause JDS hits hard than AA.

yeah, a corner stoppage and a doc/cut stoppage. hence, never knocked out in 40+ fights

by SouthCaliStunNa on Aug 8, 2010 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont think jds or big country would have had the stamina to last 5 rounds...they were both gasping at the end

jds really needs to work on his cardio regardless of who hes stuck with…he was an animal the first round and a half…but the last half of the fight he got slower and slower….

how the hell does he plan on keeping up with the pace of cain who can probably go 15 rounds if he needs to and wouldnt let you breathe for one fucking second

or if he gets stuck under brock’s disgusting gnp for a few rounds..jds gassed himself pounding on roy in the 1st round and a half….and wasnt the same after that….and we saw what happened when carwin gassed himself trying to finish brock and wasnt able to

Funny

I was at a wedding reception too, weddings tomorrow night. But I caught the last 2 fights when I hopped to the sports bar across the road. That silva sonnen fight was Intense! The bar was packed and for the most part silva fans, but I did see a couple people rooting for sonnen (or maybe against silva haha)
either way the place went nuts when silva pulled off that sub

by Reether on Aug 8, 2010 4:00 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

the bar i was at was typical flip floppers...they were all about silva in the beginning...but when sonnen was kicking ass they were suddenly all over sonnen's nuts..i hate people like that.

even the 5 people i was sitting with did that shit….they were for silva at first cause they wanted to see him shut sonnen up…but by the end of the 1st round they were suddenly on sonnen’s dick…hopped the wagon just to go along with the “vibe” of every other flip flopper in the bar…300 people in there…it began with like 200 silva fans and 100 sonnen fans…end of the first round there were 290 sonnen fans and 10 silva fans…just me and like 9 others….

every td people were screaming…and chanting “USA USA” …while the fight before they were booing fitch for dominating alves with tds…im like…you fucking 2 faced cunts….

and when the 5th round started and silva slipped and sonnen got on top everyone stood up and was counting down the minutes “4 minutes left…3 minutes left…2 minutes..” then andy pulls the sub…i fucking jump up screaming ’FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

and the place like went completely silent…and i was like HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAHHAHA…

and then “poof” it seemed like people began to jump back on silva’s wagon again…

what cunts…

WAR SILVA

Seriously, that is enough comparing Sonnen to Fitch. If you can’t tell the difference then you aren’t watching. While they both use wrestling, that is about it. If it were the case Sonnen would have been hugging his way to a title. Chael is way more active in his top game and delivers far more offense.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Aug 8, 2010 5:38 AM EDT up reply actions

no he doesnt, fitch hasnt been finished in 7 years.....he knows how to transition and fight off submissions....

look marie…fitch has the best record in the ufc next to anderson silva and gsp…..hes 13-1…say what you want about him…you know what sonnen’s record is in the ufc? he’s 4-4…all 4 losses are by submission…

chonnen does nothing but lay in someone’s guard….thats all he does…he may not have finished alves tonight but he was trying a lot of shit, he took alves back several times, he passed his guard, he got side control…he tried multiple times to finish the fight…..he ended the fight by attempting a rear naked choke for god sakes…he didnt just lay in alves guard all night…..

he stayed active, he worked for positions….he transitioned…..he took alves back multiple times…..he didnt just sit in missionary all night…

oh and you know what else he did that sonnen didnt do? HE FUCKING WON!!! HE DIDNT GET SUBMITTED! HE DIDNT GET CAUGHT IN A FUCKING TRIANGLE!

how you like them apples

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

Unanimous Fitch always transitions enough to avoid the stand up, and he always does fuck-all with them.

Our lives change like the weather, but a legend never dies.

by P-Dub on Aug 8, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

again, Hella, Sonnen hit Silva 303 times on the ground

Fitch attempted less than 60 punches. Sonnen went for a sub, Fitch attempted zero subs. Wriggling around on a guy so the ref doesn’t stand you up is not the same thing as trying to finish. Fitch is all Ground and no Pound. Sonnen may not be impervious to subs, but he is constantly inflicting damage, not just wallowing around to “improve position”.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Hella, you must have some of that baby oil in your eyes messing with your vision.

Saying Sonnen was just “laying in guard” shows you’ve got blinders on. The numbers are out there as far as how many strikes Chael landed. He was constantly working, punch, elbowing. When he is landing twenty to one on strikes why would he pass. You want to talk about transistions. He transistioned to half, he was in side mount, he had his back. Yet you don’t want to give him credit but want to credit Fitch. Yet who was the one backpedalling and running out the clock at the end of the fight? Oh that’s right.

So Helen, while Sonnen did lose, he at least went for it. And that is why today he has won himself many more fans. You can bring up the record, but somehow Fitch is one an incredible 23-1 run yet loses more fans each time he goes out there.

best card this year for me was 116,

with 117 coming close second…

the difference maker was that fitch/alves sucked while 116 was amazing front to back, with both shows delivering intese main event outcomes..

no, that's gotta go to Roy

even though Silva ate more shots, they were much weaker shots…and he still got rocked 3 times.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

in comparison to a heavyweight there obviously going to be weaker shots, but Silva was taking alot cleaner shots througout most of the fight.

Whereas Roy was covering up a lot, whatever it doesn’t matter anyway. Big respect for both Roy Nelson and Anderson.

and would still clean house against anyone else in MW. Beating Franklin means more than anything any other so-called contender has done in the MW division. (except for what Chael did tonight).

They seriously need to stop with the rematch crap

Yes Chael did freaken great and was on his way to winning but he got subbed its not controversial at all he lost and he was not on some amazing 10 fight win streak or anything to try and say he deserves an immediate rematch.

Vitor vs Silva make it happen someone will go to sleep and quick(i got my money on silva going nighty night).

i say feed sonnen to maia again if maia beats whats his face...

sonnen is 4-4 in the ufc…ALL 4 LOSSES have been by sub..

andy, maia, horn, babalu

by HellaHectic on Aug 8, 2010 5:10 AM EDT up reply actions

he's already fought both Maia and Okami

I say if Vitor gets the next shot at Andy, then give Sonnen Belcher or Leben. Winners face off for the belt.

by (shonuff) on Aug 8, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

What do you think about Sonnen vs. Bisping?

While I didn’t think he deserved the shot, the fight was made and it is an interesting match-up people want to see. I admired Chael’s performance, but he lost. Vitor vs Silva should happen.

After that is anyone’s guess. Here’s what I would like to see:
Sonnen vs. Bisping (assuming he gets past Akiyama)
Leben vs. Cote ( w/all the rematches made lately, how has this split dec. slugfest not resurfaced)
Marquardt vs. Okami
Maia vs. Belcher and Wanderlei vs. Sexyama should get re-scheduled too.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Aug 8, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

the fight id really like to see is for jake shields to forget about kampmann and move up to 185 and fight sonnen...

it appears that fitch gets the winner of kos/gsp…….(assuming fitch would fight kos if kos won)

and dana has said that vitor would get the winner of sonnen/silva

so it would be cool to see shields fight sonnen…and the winner of that get the winner of silva/vitor….

shields and sonnen have the exact same style…except for the fact shields actually knows how to transition positions and not just lay there, he knows how to pass a guard and get side control and look to get someone’s back or at least try something besides lay there and get caught in a submission like sonnen seems to always do…AND jake has sub skills…

it would either be an exciting fight, or it would quite possibly be the most boring fight in the history of the ufc…2 guys buttfucking for 15 minutes

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

anderson got fotn for getting his ass beat

chael made that the fotn, all anderson did was get an elbow from the bottom and the finish. the other 21 mins he wasn’t what made it fight of the night.

Ive watched the final round of the Anderson/Chael fight so many times, i love when the crowd goes wild when he locks up the triangle awesome man.

Ive got a new found respect for Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, First Chael put in possibly the performance of his lifetime and i can understad his frustration being so close to fulfilling his and his fathers dream.

As for Anderson he showed exactly what it means to be a true champion, never giving up and coming back from what would of been possibly the biggest upset not just in MMA but i think in sport in general. Regardless of Anderson’s last performance against Maia how can you not love this guy after the fight he has just had a true show of heart.
