They can all use a manager. Hell I wouldn’t mind having one myself. There’s a lot of shit…Insurance, flights, accomodations, equipment blah blah blah…It’s good to have a manager. But Ed doesn’t need to be in every fucking post fight shot. He’s not needed in the cage right after a fight to translate for a guy that SPEAKS FUCKING ENGLISH. That’s the part I don’t like about Ed, he doesn’t need to be front and center all the time. Like, why did they interview him before the AS/Chael fight on that Pre-event show. They were asking him for his predictions and shit, why?

If you think Ed Soares is there unwanted then you're obviously terribly mistaken.
What’s wrong with a guy who is not only intimately involved with these fighter’s careers but also a very good friend of theirs being ringside? If Anderson wants Ed to translate for him then he will. These fighters are grown individuals. Anderson chooses to speak in his native language whereas JDS labors to speak English. They’re not puppets.
I really don’t understand the vitriol directed at Ed. It almost seems prowrestling-esque the way people paint him out to be the slimy manager when all they know of him are his thoughts on some match-ups and a few rare mistranslations (translating isn’t easy).

So your beef with Ed is that his presence isn't absolutely necessary.
If that’s enough for you to so passionately dislike the guy then all power to you. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised seeing as you yourself admitted that you have no problem with disliking a fighter for the most trivial of reasons.

I have no prob with Soares
but I get what Jay is saying. Strikeforce hires a translator. The UFC could/should do the same. If they did, NO ONE would even know who Ed Soares was, and NO ONE would even care! So in fairness, the only reason ANYONE knows who Ed Soares is is because Silva chooses not to speak english. Another reason could be because Soares rarely actually translates properly!

It's only been one or two times that Ed has mistranslated and it was only slightly.
Listening to a person speak for 20-30 seconds in one language, translating it in your head, and then repeating it in a different language with 100% accuracy 100% of the time is quite difficult, I’d imagine.
I don’t understand why people seem to have such a low opinion of fighters. Ed manages JDS, both Nogueira, Aldo, Anderson Silva, Jacare and many other top fighters. Anderson has referred to him as a father figure many times and yet people still call the guy a dirtbag for no other reason because they have to put up with his face every once in a while. We barely have any knowledge of Ed’s relationship with the fighters he manages. For him to have that many top fighters under his umbrella tells us that he does a great job.

His presence is only noticeable for Anderson Silva. Even if Anderson is capable of saying the same words over and over again like Wanderlei when he was first learning English, he still cannot communicate his thoughts as well as he obviously can in Portrugese. That’s why, I’m sure, he requests that Ed translate for him.
If we didn’t know about the blackhouse connection, we wouldn’t even know that Ed also manages Lyoto, Nogueira, and JDS. That’s because they can a) speak English at least reasonably well and/or b) make an effort to connenct with fans by choosing to speak English.
You guys are seriously making way too much of Ed translating for Anderson at press conferences and post-fight interviews.

Have you ever heard of the innocent until proven guilty principle? I’m neutral towards Ed and that’s all that I’m arguing for.
He is the most successful manager in MMA. He clearly has the respect of the fighters that he manages. There have been no complaints by fighters that he manages of his business practises (unlike Ken Pavia, Monte Cox, that camp out of Arizona). He only translates for two fighters: Aldo and Anderson. Other fighters have shown that they’re perfectly capable of choosing to speak for themselves even if they’re English isn’t there (early Lyoto and JDS).
Given these facts, is it more asinine to HATE the guy or be indifferent towards him?

He’s one of the most successful. He certainly manages the highest quality fighters. At one point, he managed 3 of the #1 ranked fighters in their weight divisions.
The combined UFC record of fighters that he manages is 32-3.

I won’t even get into Soares responsibilities because I don’t fully understand them (and neither do you, clearly).
Getting there is the difficult part (as with most competitive jobs).

no one is arguing with you, it’s just when we present “facts” we back them up. U said he barely mistranslates…according to who? I have people that I personally know that have listened to him and say he butchers the quotes in favor of making Silva not sound like a dick. What are his duties, just like any other manager, make sure he gets to appointments on time, makes sure he’s relevant, negotiate terms etc. No it’s not an easy job, but I know with my business background I could do it no problem. Last, he got lucky. He got in tight with a group of tight knit guys and gained their trust. He’s sorta like my old coke dealer, guy got lucky, he met me and I gained a report with him, it led him to get business from all my rich friends. No skill, decent product, right place/right time, nothing more nothing less

If you are a person in a strange land that doesn’t speak the language, you would want someone around you that you are close to and trust! Silva is hilarious
This guy is genuinely one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met in the sport. He and the Nogueira brothers opened an MMA gym in Miami and hung around, took pictures, joked, and spent as much time as possible with the fans. People can talk all the shit they want about him…but i just wish those same folks would think a second about whether or not they really know a man’s character. All the shit talking is just ridiculous. Walk a mile boys…
