John Cena: The UFC is over the top but the WWE is safe for anyone to enjoy

John-cena-air-jordan-2009_medium

Props: Boston.com

Quoteworthy:

"It’s just not something that particularly interests me. UFC is where boxing was years ago, and I was never really into boxing, either. [WWE is] regulated entertainment that’s safe for anyone to enjoy. (The UFC) can be pretty over the top, and it’s not something I’d want my children to watch."

WWE superstar John Cena puts the F in the UFC after the world's largest fight promotion descended upon Boston for its "Edgar vs. Penn 2" pay-per-view event from the TD Garden on Aug. 28. Cena won't let his kids watch anything Octagon related because it's not "regulated entertainment" like the WWE. Anyone think the "Prototype" has a valid argument? Or has he taken one too many chairshots over his illustrious wrestling career?

UFC is over the top but WWE isn't?

Ok John, anybody who has seem your movies knows that YOU have good taste. I’ve seen episodes of Jerry Springer that were less over the top than WWE and their goofy sketches.

Lesnar isn't the most skilled fighter but until somebody beats him he is the #1 HW in the world. It's obviously not Fedor and sure as hell isn't Werdum!

Considering since 1985 114 Wrestlers have died before the age of 65...

Many to problems related to having such large bodies (umm steroids) and mma has had 1 or was it 2 deaths, since 1993 (i believe)…I would have to say wrestling is a bit more over the top and I would much rather have my kids watch the guys that don’t abuse themselves for fake, choreographed, entertainment. Those number don’t include all the nearly cripples and invalids that were part of wrestling….Phucken idiot!

i was wondering the same thing

dont wrestlers sometimes cut themselves so they will bleed everywhere? also i feel like ive seen some of those guys bring out barbed wire and shit like that. how is that safe or any better for your kids to watch?

never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do

by child on Aug 31, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

During the attitude era aroudn 1997 you had Mae YOung hook up with Mark Henry

the result of this trist was Mae young getting pregnant and giving birth to a rubber hand covered in vasaline. Yup that is what kids definitly should watch.

I've got something to say; it better to burn in hell than to fade away!!!

They also show some wrestlers male,

slamming women on occasion as well. If I remember correctly…Great stuff for children to watch!

Deaths

Da Monkey since 1993 MMA now has two deaths after that one not too long ago. The first death they actually found the guy had a heart defect that was un-noticed prior to the fight, so his death wasn’t a result of the fight. Nonetheless they count it as two.

kids think wwe is real

So if you look at mma vs wwe and think they’re both real, mma wouldn’t be nearly as bad for kids to watch. In fact for the vast majority of kids who have a small attention span, mma would be down right boring for them. Their brains aren’t going to understand most of the technical parts, and they need all the stories and costumes and personalities the ridiculous wwe actors provide. But its far from more appropriate for kids. Watching a woman get back handed by a man, while being held helplessly by another man, while 20,000 ppl cheer it on because she’s a “villian” doesn’t send a good msg growing up.

I haven’t seen WWE in a number of years but I can tell you as a father of four I wouldn’t let my kids watch it (not that they’ve shown any interest to watch it) because of all the sexual overtones and innuendos. I have let my 10 and 12 year olds watch MMA when there’s a good grappling match going on but have also used ‘parent discretion’ once the elbows find there mark a few times and the blood starts to trickle. I want them to appreciate the martial arts of MMA at their age, not so much the swollen face of one’s opponent (like Marcus Davis the other night).

by mma_dad on Aug 31, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

LMAO

I used to watch WWE, but UFC is so much more real. He knows that UFC is the biggest threat to WWE out there and ultimately his own livelihood.

However, WWE is hardly the bastion of morality. It intentionally targets a young audience and then confronts them with all sorts of despicable images and scenarios. I’m not sure I’d let my daughter watch WWE, but wouldn’t hesitate to let her watch UFC.

Cenas a company man

Everything he says to the media is pre-approved by Vince McMahon. This is pretty much what Vince thinks of MMA. Plus they’re trying to push WWE towards the kids now that they’re rated PG and they’ve toned down the product since Linda McMahon began running for senate. Comparing WWE content with a violent, real, exciting and more successful alternative in MMA (specifically the UFC) is an easy way to take cheap shots at a superior product and to move WWE away from the adult audience that they once tried to attract in the late 90s-early 00s. I don’t know whether Cena truly believes this or not but I do know that this is exactly what the McMahons want their top star to say to the media.

Exactly David W_S
The UFC) can be pretty over the top, and it’s not something I’d want my children to watch."

Both are PG shows the big difference is one is a real sport and the other is a fake sport.

Anyone think the “Prototype” has a valid argument? Or has he taken one too many chairshots over his illustrious wrestling career?

Neither, I think he’s just a shill for his boss. The WWE offers the same, and often times, more, violent content than the UFC, as well as offering more sexually explicit content than the UFC.

You said it!

David you hit the nail on the head. They went PG so now there’s no blood and the chicks are starting to wear clothes. Not only for Linda McMahon but to get the younger crowds back like in the 80’s. They lost the entire demographic of 18-34 y/o to UFC. I would bet Cena does watch MMA considering his one time rival Brock Lesnar is kickin the holy hell outta people (except Carwin). But he’s the top dog, so he’s gonna say whatever is good for the company.

Over the top: a few words in response...

Owen “I died on the company dime in a stunt that had nothing to do with fighting” Hart, Goldust (promoting stereotypes of gay men and making links between homosexuality and predatory behaviour, all on prime time for impressionable kids), Mankind…

Sexyama gets a little pink with his ring outfits, but the in-octagon product is about as regulated as it gets.

Can Cena say that fighter safety is monitored by any athletic association in ANY legal jurisdiction in North America?

Sucks when your PPV bonuses are getting siphoned off, even by lame title fights like Silva v. Maia…
