UFC 118: Demian Maia vs Mario Miranda set for main card in Boston

Mma_e_maia_576_medium

That didn't take long.

A few days after having his Ultimate Fight Night 22 main event opponent, Alan Belcher, pull out of the contest due to an eye injury, Demian Maia has a new adversary as well as a new date for his next bout.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist will take on Mario Miranda at UFC 118 on August 28 in Boston, Massachusetts. MMAmania.com learned of the match up earlier today.

Maia (12-2) has been to the mountaintop but the Sherpa sent him sent tumbling back down it after a five round fiasco at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. The loss to Anderson Silva was his second in three fights after stringing together ten straight wins.

He is undoubtedly one of the sport's most gifted grapplers, but his striking has yet to evolve to a higher level. To his credit, he showed a marked improvement in a unanimous decision win against Dan Miller at UFC 109.

Star-divide

Mario Miranda was last seen sending David Loiseau on his way from the UFC, yet again, after his UFC 115 victory as he defeated "The Crow" via TKO in the second round.

The 10-1 Brazilian middleweight lost his Octagon debut to Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night 21 back in March. Prior to joining the UFC, Miranda cut his teeth on the regional circuit, with notable wins over Joe Vedepo and Ricky Story.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Maia fight Palhares. That would be very interesting once/if it hit the ground. They are both on this card. Maybe if they both win.

really? i bet they keep it standing in a horriblly unexciting fight

possibly

I am just more so interested in seeing what would happen on the ground. IT’s certainly possibly it stays on the feet.

by RyanHobbs on Aug 3, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt it

both of them are too proud re: their bjj skills. They’d go to the ground if for nothing else than to show that they’re better than the other there.

i thought the Leites vs Maia crack was a joke.

i seriously laughed.

I think it would look like Maia playing Jake Shields in the Brazalian remake of Shields vs Mayhem Miller.

Nobody tired. Nobody finished. sssssSuper.

ya, I could see that

Leites, imo, doesn’t come across as having that killer instinct that Maia and Palhares have. Leites v. Maia doesn’t interest me for that reason. But putting two guys who think they are the best in the world on the ground who have enough pride to push the envelope to prove it would make for a good fight.

why do they hate leites?

Maia should move down to 170.

Looks like he could make the cut easily. There are some great matchups there for him.

I'm always right, even when I'm wrong.

True.

Its not like he has to worry about losing power haha.

burn

but its true, a drop to 170 would be good for maia.

never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do

by child on Aug 3, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would he?

He’d be at a significant speed disadvantage. It’s not like he has quick hands for a MW. I don’t think size is really a factor for Maia — most if not all fighters at MW don’t want to grapple with him. The only reason I can see is that he’ll always be under Anderson Silva until Silva moves up in weight or retires.

by Pantherhare on Aug 3, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

How would he be at a speed disadvantage?

He may be faster and feel better than ever at that weight. Plus the he would have a size advantage theoretically, which is important in this day and age, no matter what you think.

I'm always right, even when I'm wrong.

by BNF on Aug 3, 2010 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Because he’s not a fast MW and WWs are generally faster than MWs. He “may” be faster and better does not mean that he “should” move down to 170. He may be weaker and worse at that weight.

And I never said size doesn’t matter, I said it doesn’t matter that much for Maia. He hasn’t had any fights where size was a problem. His problems are speed and striking technique.

by Pantherhare on Aug 3, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

You are speculating just like me.

I would just like to see him try. You have to admit he is a small MW and looks like he could drop with no problem.

I'm always right, even when I'm wrong.

he beat down the crow not to long ago

think he lost his first UFC fight. He is like 1-1 in the UFC. and I believe he was undefeated prior to that.

WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY ….

I dont get your point?

The crow has been kicked out off the UFC like 20 times and this guy should not be fighting a dude that just fought for the title.

by Mir on Aug 3, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

haha ya he gets kicked out of the UFC only to come back everytime theyfight in canada, still gonna root for the crow though..

There was no point

I wanted to make fun of your name. Maia is getting some nice uncle Dana treatment. Eh, it doesn’t bother me that much. His last 4 fights were tough, he just got beaten up by the champ, no problem with him getting a gatekeeper so we can re-evaluate. Can’t win em all man, He had a better match booked up. Shit happens.

I am in shock....

Mario Mirando …ahahah what a way to kick Maia in the nuts…thats like playing pro basketball in the NBA finals, losing and then going to play ball in spain.

by Mir on Aug 3, 2010 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Makes sense

I don’t agree with it, but it does. Remember that Maia just lost his last fight. Most guys don’t get a top guy for their next after a title shot loss. Maia submits Miranda easy imo and gets a win. Just really not that shocking. Better 118 than headlining a fight night card though.

Mario used to train at my gym before he left to train at Matt Humes’ gym. He’s a beast and Maia will be a huge test for him. Great opportunity though, not bad for your third fight in the UFC.

What is the definition of a country breakfast what does it consist of?

It is an ill defined meal designed to provide a heavy load of calories. It would typically include eggs, meat, potatoes and biscuits and gravy.—signed MAtt Hughes
