UFC Quick Quote: Is Michael Bisping 'two wins away' from a title shot?

Michael-bisping-627750234_medium

"If Chael Sonnen comes into the octagon in the right frame of mind, he will give Silva problems. But I can see Silva winning this by submission, because when Sonnen fought Nate Marquardt he was dominant on top, but left himself open at times. I’ll be watching the fight closely, because I believe I am two wins away from fighting for that belt. I think I have seen chinks in [Akiyama's] armor. I’m going to come in very strong, very fit, and I’m going to exploit him by setting a fast pace."

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 champion Michael Bisping tells the Daily Star that he intends to vault himself into the middleweight title hunt with a big win over International star Yoshihiro Akiyama. "The Count" rebounded from a unanimous decision loss to Wanderlei Silva "Down Under" back on February 20 to outwork the venerable Dan Miller and take all three judge's scorecards at UFC 114 last May. Bisping is 3-2 in his last five fights with losses to Silva and Dan Henderson. In addition to Miller, the Brit also stopped Denis Kang at UFC 105 and decisioned Chris Leben way back at UFC 89. Is he "two wins away" from a title shot? Or do we reserve judgment for after the "Sexyama" fight?

Ummmmmm No he is not.

He is a little farther away from a title shot that that. He needs like 3 more wins. 2 of them being top talent like Nate, Sonnen, etc etc.

I was actually agreeing with what i was reading about his prediction on silva/sonnen and i was thinking wow he is actually talking sense but then he starts yapping about a title shot with 2 wins and i thought we were back to talking nonsense again but if you think about it, he will probably get a title shot after 2 more wins. Not because he deserves it but just because dana and the rest of the gang seem to be desperate to get bisping a title shot

Hell Dan hardy got one by totally avoiding any big names, I fully expect Bizzzzbing to get the same silver spoon treatment.

Bisping vs Vitor!?

I don’t know about two wins away but Vitor has been out of action and talks about him fighting next for the belt piss me off as I don’t believe it’s fair for any fighter to be off so long and fight a fighter like Silva. But Vitor should be good enough to at least challenge Bisping as a warm up fight. If Bisping wins put him against Marquardt or Yoshi next.

This guy is SO DELUSIONAL!!!!!

He has NOT beat ONE guy in the top 10 or 15. He gets the EASIEST possible matchups. He is fightign a guy taht is a natural 170 lber and gassses in 2 rounds and Chris Leben subbed. I think Belcher won that fight also.

This guy has been SO protected it makes me SICK. HE needs to beat 2 or 3 guys like Marquardt, Belfort, Belcher, Sonnen, Cote. The UFC has done their BEST to keep him away from the guys taht will beat him. Fucking joke this guy is so arrogant.

two wins away? This isn't the Middleweight Division circa 2007 there, Mikey.

The only forseeable way for you to get a title shot in 2 wins is as follows.

Anderson has to lose to Sonnen this week. so your outlook depends on that feet of strength.

2. DESTROY Akiyama… like I mean not even close.
3. Beat Anderson Silva in his rebound match.
3. Title shot.

BTW I am just as likley to replace Barack Obama as President before Oct 2010. So ya know… good luck with all that you over rated pompus ass.

Unfortunately yes he is. Dana's desperate to manufacure his UK posterboy a title shot

Is he deserving of one??? Not a chance. They’ll steer this clown well clear of anyone remotely dangerous, Marquadt, Sonnen, Okami, Belcher, Belfort etc, as a soon as he steps up in class he gets soundly beaten.

He’ll doubtless get a decision over Akiyama by running backwards. Then it’ll likely be a “much anticipated rematch” with Wand (very winnable even for Bizzzzbing), then assuming he’ll get the nod in that employing the same tactics, then that’s three in a row and title shot.

Stupid Push in the UK

for big name fighters to spread the UFC’s brand. Bisping needs to show he can fight tough enough to finish people, not point out decisions againts ok talent. But Dana is pushing things hard in the UK, and unfortunately, Bisping is one of the best they have to offer, so he could get a shot even if we all know he isn’t good enough for one. Give him the shot and let him get destroyed! Then he will be one step closer to being out of the UFC, and one step closer to me not having to hear about him anymore!

So let's say he beats Sexy (which I doubt) but let's pretend

That is obviously not enough for a shot. Who does he get? Does Joe throw Jake at him for Jake’s first fight at 185? He has to get by someone who has some sort of elite status, and I just don’t see him beating anyone of that caliber. Dana may try to make an easy road for him, I just don’t see him winning, even then.

I agree

I was using Shields as an example of someone who I think Bis would have to beat to even be considered for a shot. I don’t see him getting by anyone of that caliber. I did think that the plan was to get Shields involved in both classes…..But with not too many exciting choices for Georges…

I don’t know. Admittedly I’m a fan of Bisping and not really of Jake, so I’m probably playing favourites here, but I think Bisping would do well against Jake. He has sound standup (not all that powerful, but technically very good), great takedown defence, and is really good at getting up when he is taken down. As much as you guys may hate him you have to admit that much. I think he would outpoint Shields in the standup all day long, and either stuff his takedowns or get right back up if he is taken down. I think it would be a really good fight for him to take as he doesn’t have to worry about getting blasted unconcious again. That being said, I think Jake is going to stay at WW at least for the next little bit.

Shields would destroy Bizzzzbing

Olympic wrestler Dan Henderson couldn’t stuff his td’s, I dont see Mick being able too consistently. If somehow he could then I agree he’d decision Shields standing, just dont think he’d keep it standing.

by attakdog on Aug 3, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Dan is more of a Greco wrestler, thus he didn’t train leg take downs his whole life. I’m sure he’s quite good at it, I’m not saying he’s a slouch, but his strength is the clinch takedown and clinch defence. Also, Dan is getting a little older and doesn’t neccessarily do his best at MW anymore. I’m not saying he’s done, but he has always admitted to hating the cut to MW. Dan looked gassed after he laid that beating on Shields in the first, whereas on of Bispings strengths has always been cardio. I’m not saying he would win, I’m just saying he would have a better chance than most of the haters would like to give him.

by Deuce02 on Aug 3, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Although Sexy is skilled and has the power to put Bisping away, I see Bisping buying time until Sexy undoubtedly gasses and puts him away. I’m not sure if that should sway your opinion on the guy and make you give him props neccessarily. I want to see Bisping fight a guy who won’t gas, has some power and grappling. That would boost him I think. I like the dude based on his personality mostly, but if he could get past a Shields (I know, no power) or that top tier type fighter then I think he would be put in the upper part of the division.

I don’t really think anything about him in terms of his placement. He hasn’t fought enough of the top guys for me to evaluate that. I like watching his fights, and I like his personality, therefore I like him. He doesn’t have to be champ one day to have me as a fan. I’ll let you in on a little secret, Cote is one of my favourites as well, but I don’t see him making a run at the most consecutive wins record. Only a small percentage of fighters will ever be in that elite category, but all of them think they have what it takes to be there. That type of confidence doesn’t bother me in the least, and all fighters should have it.

If I were British, I could see you thinking that I’m doing this for some sort of National pride or something (you’ve chosen the other route a Brit could go and hate him), but I’m Canadian and therefore his nationality has nothing to do with it. You didn’t mention it, but I thought I would tell you that anyways. I would probably be much less cordial if I were a nuthugger, like I am with GSP.

I think you have the story write but the context wrong about the time switch. Hendo wanted a certain time slot and they were supposed to switch all along, but Hendo wanted to keep it consistent so they did. At the end when everyone was used to their training schedule he wanted to change it even though he was the one in the first place who wanted them to not switch at all. I can see why Bisping would be pissed at that.

Bisping has no punching power and his grappling skills are purely defensive

There’s no chance that he can defend Jakes takedowns or get back to his feet from his back, Jake is a master at taking people down and controlling them. If Hendo can’t cope with Jakes grappling then there’s no way that a way inferior grappler in Bisping can and having decent technique but no power hardly makes him a threat to Jake standing either.

Deuce of course they wont give him anyone remotely decent

This is my point. Dana knows he’s shit and will get soundly beaten by anyone decent, that’s why he’ll get either wand or leben after Akiyama. Then Dana can hype him as being “the form guy” “three wins on the trot” etc and avoid giving him anyone good. Trust me this will happen.

by attakdog on Aug 3, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I can see that

but I don’t see him getting by Sexy, or Wand for that matter. If that first fight with Wand had been 5 seconds longer, he would have been TKO’d.

He'll defo get past sexi

Bizzzzy might lose the first when akiyama’s fresh but he’ll start gassing midway through the second and Mick can back peddle away for the win.

I see Mick having a similar fight with Wand to the first but with the judges giving him the verdict this time.

by attakdog on Aug 3, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't have that kind of faith in him

He is going to get tossed around. You never know with the judges (which is where this is going), but, I think Sexy takes it.

by Deuce02 on Aug 3, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

he is definitely going to need it

I just have to think that Sexy is going to come in a little better prepared to go three rounds than he did with Leben. If not, then Mike has a better chance.

by Deuce02 on Aug 3, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm...

Maybe. If he impresses against Akiyama, and then goes on to beat, say, Okami or the Nate/Palhares winner, then I could see him getting a shot.
I think it all depends how the rest of the Division plays out over the next couple of fights though. It’s a bit up in the air with Maia being benched and Belcher being injured. There’s no one for Okami to fight at the moment (well, Leben maybe), and Nate is just coming off a No.1 Contendership fight. In addition, exactly how far away would Palhares be if he beats Nate?
Tricky stuff.

by MMACHAMP on Aug 3, 2010 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

I think he'll beat Akiyama,

and then if he can somehow beat a guy like Marquardt, Okami or Belcher he should get the contender shot. I see the MW division in order this way:

1. AS
2. Chael Sonnen ( soon to drop )
3. Yushin Okami
4. Alan Belcher
5. Nate Marquardt
6. Vitor Belfort
7. Mike Bisping.

So he def needs a couple big wins.

by theworldismine on Aug 3, 2010 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

I know rankings are very subjective, but how did you arrive at yours? How did Belcher get so high on the list, same with Vitor (never fought at 185 in the UFC, and hasn’t fought at 185 since January 2009)? Vitor has only fought at MW twice (Lindland and Terry Martin). I’m not bagging on you, I’m just wondering how you came up with these, unless it’s how you see the UFC ranking their own fighters.

Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.

by MM_Eh on Aug 3, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

No offense taken, and I actually agree about Vitor;

I just placed him there due to the UFC’s status with him being a contender and all- in fact lets bump him down to 8th and put Leben in at 7th ( Bizz dropping to 6th ). A short breakdown of my own irrelevant rankings: Anderson is obvious, as is Chael Sonnen. Yushin Okami I place third due to his competition and his record. I like Belchers momentum (which has now halted), so I regard him higher than Nate right now, who just lost badly to Chael. In skill level and records, Nate should be higher than Alan. So now we come to Michael Bisping: although his losses are much less memorable than his defeats, it must be considered who he lost to- Dan Henderson, Rashad Evans, and Wanderlei Silva. His losses against both Shad and Wand were far from decisive as well. His record stands at 20-3 (?), which is awesome, so if he should beat 2 more top guys I consider it fair. Leben gets 7th due to once again, momentum, and Vitor gets 8th fairly, though he is much higher in the UFCs eyes.

True Deuce

Neither rashad or Wand were robberies, he clearly lost both, especially the Wand fight where he was seconds from being stopped in each round.

by attakdog on Aug 3, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Only Bisping ad his fans had him beating Rashad and Wand

Wand-Bisping especially was a clear cut 29-28 victory to Wand, I don’t see how anyone can argue otherwise. Just because Bisping whines everytime that he loses a decision doesn’t mean that he was robbed, he’s as bad a loser as Tito.

I wouldn’t call any of the fights robberies (including the Hamill fight). They were all very close fights, which is not a robbery. I thought he won all three actually, I was a little suprised he didn’t get the W in the Rashad fight, but not that suprised in the Wand fight. To call them robberies insinuates that they weren’t even close.

by MM_Eh on Aug 3, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It was kinda a close fight

as in 29-28 for Hamill. When I watched that fight, I really didn’t have too much of an opinion of either of those guys. I am certainly more biased now though.

"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."

by Deuce02 on Aug 3, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

LMAO - that was the easiest 29-29 fight to call in history. no way did bizzzzzbing win more than a round.

By your logic I suppose Dan Hardy did enough to earn the win over GSP too???

I wouldn’t say I was particularly biased, I’ve said how I believe he’ll beat Akiyama and get a title shot. What I do object to is the UFC selling us a pup with Bizzzzzbing and building him up to be some superstar striking machine world beater, when anyone with a shred of knowledge can see he aint anything more than a mid carder/gatekeeper.

by attakdog on Aug 3, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

No, that is not my logic. That was a clear cut decision (5 rounds to 0 for GSP). That fight wasn’t even close. The Bisping/Hamill fight was in fact much much closer and could have gone either way. Like I said, I had him winning, I didn’t think too much of it when he didn’t, therefore I don’t think it was a robbery like most of you Bisping haters would like to think.

I wasn't a hater when I watched it the first time, and I was definitely shaking my head when it was announced

There aren’t a lot of completely ridiculous decisions out there (lots of examples of one judge getting it horribly, horribly wrong- I am talking to you Cecil), but that Hamill fight has to go down as one of the worst examples. 7 out of 10 maniacs agree. But, we are all entitled to our opinion.

  • Evans fight? Possibly a draw. Did he get robbed because he lost via decision, nah . . not at all. It’s not like he dominated the fight from the opening bell to the end.
  • Wanderlei fight? HUH?!?

Not sure

I’m not sure why all the hate on bisping and his abilities?! He’s only ever been soundly beaten once, against dan. Other than that he’s fought some very tough guys, wandi, rashad, hammill, leben…I’m not saying he has shown enough yet to deserve a title shot but a couple of convincing wins against such guys has to put him in the picture!! I think he has shown a very well rounded fighting game and clearly understands the need to evolve! It’s not like he’s demanding a title shot, simply stating he should be in the picture which he will be!!

I've really

Warmed up to bisping, everybody seems to hate him cuz he has this doucheness to his personality but as a fighter you kinda have to have that cockiness, and as of recently he seems to have been more humble.

I also feel like he’s evolving, I really liked the way he fought vs Kang, and I think he’s shown a ton of improvement from his fight vs hendo. I don’t think he’s top 5 yet but I think if he keeps it up he can def get there and I like him vs sexy.
