Fight Metric: Frankie Edgar was as good as he looked at UFC 118

Picture_2_medium

Fight Metric, the mathmeticians of the MMA universe, have released their report on Penn vs. Edgar 2. And, like you'd suspect, it confirmed what we all saw with our own two eyes. Edgar really did dominate en route to a decision. We knew that, of course, but it's good to have the backing of math.

at least this time he out struck him

notice the low percentage of BJ's strikes

That’s one of the two things that was tripping me out all night. BJ was hitting nothing but air despite having a much longer reach and “the best boxing in MMA”. He looked off to me again. I’m not making excuses for him, cause I hate him. Nor am I trying to take anything away from Frankie, who put on the fight of his life. But again B.J looked apathetic and unmotivated. He tried more than in the first fight, but where was his pinpoint striking and his legendary TD defense. Edgar is half his size and was still taking him down. So much for all the people who said the only reason GSP won was his size advantage!!! I hope this settles the issue of where Penn fits in the P4P question. One thing I do have to give him credit for is his phenomenal chin. Frankie was tagging that thing right on the button with huge overhand rights all night long and Penn never even blinked. His head is so smoothe and so nearly a perfect sphere, that everything glances off and nothing cuts him or stuns him. It’s like punching a frakkin bowling ball!

I distinctly remember a couple kicks by BJ but maybe they didnt hit?

I’m kinda doubting anybody here gets the reference, but that’s what your post above made me think of.

Great fight from frankie

Bj had no answers. Frankie beat him to the punch, took him down, slammed him, and had great sub defense. I found myself rooting for bj to just be able to take frank down, hold him down and look for a sub. I have never felt that way in a bj fight before. Congrats to Edgar. I hope bj comes back strong. A Kenny rematch sounds about right. Dammit Ulf. Awaiting my new sig.

we have a new p4p champion....

in GSP. it has to be official now according to everyone out there. fedor lost, bj lost twice, anderson lost 4 rounds big time, shogun hasnt even defended his belt, and brock even almost lost, did lose his first round by a 10 8 score in my book. GSP is winning every round in all his fights. GSP is #1 P4P. ADMIT IT

by Egads on Aug 29, 2010 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Anderson still won..

Losing 4 rounds means nothing when you win..

true but

he lost the last 2 rounds against maia and first 4 against sonnen, so in essence has only won 1 in his last 7 rounds, and some could argue lost some of those by 10 8 score as well. when has anyone even taken a round out of gsp? right now gsp is more dominating in his weight class than anyone else.

by Egads on Aug 29, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

True but GSP never finishes even the weakest fighters..

We could always use that against him, I’m a fan of both guys but this P4P race is so pointless, I just want to see the best fight the best like I did last night..

BS

GSP has finished 3 out of his last 6 fights.

by Bill Maher on Aug 29, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

But look at his trend..

Hes obviously finishing less and less, He finished a low level out mtached Matt serra, An old Matt hughes, And a lightweight Bj. The top guys he fought he fought at his own weight he came no where near finishing. Hes an amazing fighter but My point is no ones perfect and theres always a flaw and argument for the top guys to be number one..

Finishes are exciting but they don't prove how good a fighter you are just that you have finishing moves

A fighter like Alves when he wins might have more finishes than Fitch but that doesn’t make him better.

Exactly..

Which makes this P4P thing even dumber..

Bj's corner n Gsp is #1

I put most of the blame on bj’s corner; if a fighter is having a tough time n rounds I believe the corner should give advice to help the their fighter, not call the other fighter a cocksucker. There was no advice from bj’s corner just “come on!” I would fire that cornerman n get a legit one, but I hear a lot of terrible corner men n the ufc, maybe it’s just ignorance,
gsp is the #1 p4p, I believe he would dominate the #2 silva, his takedowns r just too explosive n his ground jiu jitsu neutalizer (wrestling) is too good for Anderson

I loved Manny Pacquiao's corner

in the Miguel Cotto fight. Freddy Roach was just repeating, over and over for a whole break “Hit him HARD. Hit him HARD.” in the calmest, most soothing voice you can imagine.

BJ's corner sucked

All that cussing and no advice does nothing but rattle and already frustrated fighter. Frankie’s corner gave sound advice in both fights.

The advice to BJ should have been start kicking to the legs and body and even if he blocks them it will wear down his arms and legs, take away his quickness. Boxing Frankie did not work for 5 rounds the first time so either go for the takedown or try more kicks.

When BJ did throw kicks he had some success with it and when he went for takedowns he got them….. it was just to little to late. In the last 20 seconds why not throw the head kick? It was the only chance at that point. Perhaps BJ was rocked by the knee at the end of the 5th? I hope Edgar beats the Fitch clone Maynard. I hate watching these dry hump ride it out no risk fighters like Maynard and Fitch

“Fuck that Speed” and “Go get that Cocksucker” might make for a good t-shirt but is not good fight advice

No BJ fans disputing the win,

I am surprised. I thought Melendez would have given him a run for his money before the two Edgar loses, now I’m certain. He can do everything Frankie can on the feat plus he hits harder and has a chin of stone. I like BJ but picked Frankie to win both fights as his last few wins were superb and he showed excellent skill in them which not many gave him credit for. BJs wins against Diego and Kenny were good, but their lack of skill and strategy made the wins look better than they actually were. I felt the same way about Mirs wins over Nog and Kongo. BJ should continue to fight because I do not see Frankies strategy being able to keep him in the top spot for too long, but having lost only one match, he may well prove me wrong about that.
