Frankie Edgar silences critics with dominant performance at UFC 118

"I built on my confidence. The first time I was in there, I had the confidence I could do what I needed to do, but I hadn’t done it before. After doing it and knowing I could do it going in a second time, that confidence added a lot to it."

Frankie Edgar is the champion at 155 pounds. After UFC 112, not many people were buying that. But after completely dismantling BJ Penn over the course of five rounds there are no unanswered questions. The champion chasitized the media at the post fight press conference for not believing in him. Do you believe? Is Edgar a long term champion? Or is he keeping the belt warm for Gray Maynard?

Hopefully the Penn hype will go away.

Good for Edgar, very impressive performance.

Whats next for Penn?

piss off haha59

he should beat mayard but its a toss up they are both good at winning decisions… seems to be the trend but more power to them

Exactly

Frankie did a great job. I was pulling for him to win.

Now as for BJ its interesting….He has 2 back to back losses against the current 155 champ in Edgar and 2 loses against current 170 champ GSP. He doesnt hold 1 win over either, so where will he go from here?

He can either get chunky and get knocked out by AS or drop to the WEC?

its crazy people are writing penn off lol

im not a fan but edgar is just his kryptonite,it happens.i think bj would beat maynard comfortably but i see maynard beating edgar again.its just one of those crazy situations.

Im not writing him off - but he's a head case

I just can’t see him having the desire to get back into the killer he can be.

GSP broke him. FRANKIE finished the job

Anderson will DESTROY Sonnen every time they fight. Surviving 4 rounds doesn’t mean anything. Maia and Leites are way better than Chael. That loser will be cut very soon

As someone posted before, this may just be Penn passing the torch...

Penn is very talented, and to relegate him to the WEC is just absurd. He’s not the same fighter. I just didn’t see the old Penn in his last 2 fights. In the first fight, you can say maybe he was injured, but after two in a row, you can’t say anything.

I would love to see Penn-Hughes 3.

Frankie Really Didn't Win

If War Penn didn’t..

1. Have an ingrown toenail
2. get hung over from too much Sam Adams
3. Have nightmares from the night before featuring the StayPuft Marshmallow Man
4. train at the Ala Moana All You Can Eat Buffet
5. spend so much time beating Frankie on X-Box 360
6. miss his pre-fight mani-pedi

Then he would have easily beat Edgar

BJ looked slow and old last night.

He’s not going to matter for awhile. Maynard will beat Edgar again then will jhold the belt for awhile. I dont see many guys having what it takes to beat the BULLY!

by HEELHOOK on Aug 29, 2010 11:13 AM EDT reply actions

Edgar will defend his belt against Maynard

If he can utilize his speed against Penn, he can definately do even better against Maynard. Edgar’s gotten so much better since their last fight, plus the confidence he has from beating Penn twice, he’ll take the rematch.

Notice how Nate Diaz was tryin to get a LW titleshot at the post-fight presser?

I thought Frankie looked unbelievable.

This little dude was picking up a much bigger and highly skilled BJ Penn and just slamming his ass to the ground.

And when they would trade strikes, Edgar was masterfully dropping bombs to Penn’s chin, and by the time BJ recovered to retaliate, Frankie was already dancing out and targeting his next move.

He’ll probably fight Maynard next, but I would love to watch a Aldo/Edgar fight.

Sadly..

Maynard is probably going to hump him to death for 5rounds much like their first fight..

Edgar will eventually have to drop to 145.. And a fight with Aldo is a fight I would pay a lot to see.

by RayRayJr on Aug 29, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

For Frankie I am more worried

over a Aldo/Edgar match up than a Maynard match up. I think Aldo and his speed match up better than a bigger, slower Maynard who Frankie will speed by, gas out and win on decision.
I too would love to see Frankie finish fights by TKO or submission but sometimes your opponent doesn’t allow for it.

Frankie is a great champion so far.

Frankie Earned his stripes 2night

I will admit I was one of the people questioning the first fight and if it was legit. Frankie proved it 2night and gets all the respect in the world from me. I always liked Edgars game since the first time I saw him fight against Tyson Griffin. I never thought he had a chance at the belt, especially because he had to go through BJ to get it. But he did and my hats off to him. I find it pretty insulting that people in the press conference were still kind of questioning the win. One reporter had the nerve to ask Frankie why he thought BJ looked “sad” before the fight. U know fuck off guy, get the hell out of here with that kind of question. I just can not believe people still cant get off BJ’s nuts. I am a huge BJ fan but even I can step back and realize the better fighter won and give the guy his props. I think BJ should fight Gomi next.

Now… can he keep the fight on the feet against maynard??

Penn took Edgar down when he tried (aka twice)… Maynard is going to try more than once and if he gets him down… prepared to be humped.

Frankie has Renzo and Ricardo so his Jitz will be in top form

Id even like to see Frankie bring in Dan Miller for some Ninja chokes classes.

Maynard is a “bully” I can’t see Frankie out pointing him so he has to find a way to finish. I thin sub is the best bet. obviously.

Frankie already trains at AMA with Jim and Dan, as well as the other excellent guys there, every Sunday.

Edgar definitely silenced me

I don’t like BJ, but still thought Edgar’s first win was a fluke and wrong decision. Even against what looked like a shot BJ Penn this second time, Edgar showed me enough to say he’s legit. Will he beat Maynard? Entering last night, I thought no way, but after the victory I’m now on the fence.
