Kimbo Slice to leave MMA for boxing

Kimbo-slice_medium

Who didn't see this coming?

After being cut from the UFC earlier this year, and with his one-time indestructible YouTube phenomenon image tarnished, Kimbo Slice is leaving the cage behind for the ring.

Slice via ESPN New York:

"I feel like a baby all over again. I'm thinking about this at night. I'm gonna be a problem in the heavyweight division. I'm going to be coming in with a bad demeanor. I want to see what it's like to break some ribs, break a jaw with one punch. This is a career move. I love fighting. I like to knock people the [expletive] out. I love engaging. Maybe some people think I'm crazy."

While this move is likely due to the larger paydays he'll receive as a pugilist, Kimbo is probably a bit more fond of his career prospects inside of the ring than he was inside of the Octagon just a few short months ago.

So, what kind of chances do you give the Bahamian brawler to succeed in boxing? Surely better than his chances in mixed martial arts...

lmao

he doesn’t hit hard and no one is going to be intimidated, so how does he figure he’s gonna “knock people the [expletive] out?”
when exactly has he knocked ANYONE out?

yea he dropped a bunch of danny dorkbutts that lived down the street..he wasnt dropping trained boxers

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

did he really?

I remember guys gassing, but not dropping.
I’m just busting balls, as I found Kimbo to be a really likable guy!

ANS, do you seriously think Kimbo's gonna do anything significant in boxing?

he’s a cashcow and Gary Shaw is milking him. Kimbo’s way too slow, has no cardio, and no defence.

I gotta admit,

I’m a Kimbo fan. I find the whole mystique entertaining. Sure he’s not much of a mixed martial artist, but he is not that bad. I hope he does well, he’s one of those guys I just cheer for for some reason.

KEV, my first thought was "lmao" you beat me to it!

No cardio, no chin, and hits like a girl! That fight with Houston was fn weird! I truly believe that Houston got something for that loss! Houston hits 10x harder and he looked afraid to engage. I think that may have been the first fixed UFC bout.

Houston DID get something for that loss. A one-way ticket out of the UFC.

Or do you mean money? What amount of money do you think someone would have had to pay Houston to lose that fight? It didn’t happen and anyone that thinks that fight was rigged is probably sniffing glue.

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.-STAK

Fav Quote of ESPN Article

“He could easily be at the same level as guys the Klitschkos have been fighting,” said Shaw, who gave a shoutout to son Jared, who turned him on to the much-downloaded backyard brawler several years ago. “Maybe I’m wrong, maybe he’s coming to boxing too late, but I don’t think so. He’s not a beaten up athlete. He’s a natural, with that bob and weave like Mike Tyson.”

another question James

how do you figure it’ll be for higher paydays? Only the top boxers make a kot of money, and he’s certainly not a top guy, not to mention he’s never knocked anyone out.

by kevjack115 on Aug 26, 2010 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

His Boxing Form Is Actually Alright

His stance, his delivery, etc. His problem in MMA was the ground game and kickboxing. His knees wont stand leg kicks, he wont survive vs guys versed on the ground. Kimbo standing however will do alright. No way will he be a force in Boxings HW division even though its shallow unless some promoter vaults him in the cage with a top guy for money.

thing is kev

Kimbo’s not coming in as a nobody. He’s not Money May but I think he’d at least come in at the same level as Malinaggi money wise. He won’t make Millions upon Millions but he’ll definitely make some good change. More than MMA for sure.

i think his best bet is in mma at 205. but i don’t think he can/wants to take the kicks in the leg. i think it will be much more hard for him to beat a person that boxed their whole life. it is a little easier to compete in mma in a short period of time training

^^This

The myth of Kimbo’s power has been a problem for me since EliteXC. Go back and watch the videos of him fighting chumps with no gloves on. Who did he knock out? No one. And he’s never flat out KO’d anyone in MMA since he received formal “fight” training.
He is going to get absolutely flattened in boxing and quickly realize he’s in whole new world. And none of those guys are going to show half as much mercy on his as Roy Nelson did.

Kimbo's power has always been vastly overrated.

The guy built up a nice physique and a unique mystique (Jesus Christ, that’s alot of ’ique’s’), but that’s all he had going for him…aside from the beard.

Laughable

Oh well looks like the Shaws are set to milk the last of Kimbo’s fame in a sport that he has no chance at succeeding in. Age, arthritis, cardio and a lack of real talent means that he’s only good for the occasional undercard fight. Hopefully this is the last we’ll hear about Kimjoke on this site now that he’s left the sport, let boxing deal with his awful performances and annoying fanbase.

Vitali was a kick boxer, pretty good one too...

He also has a PHD in Sports science and speaks 5 languages. He has the highest KO% (95%) ever for a HW and has never been knocked down, his two losses were by decision and injury (in a fight he was winning).

If he were American, he would be revered, but he is too stoic and methodical in what he does to truly get appreciation from American boxing fans. He and his brother repeatedly sell out 80,000 seat venues in Germany.

He loads up on all his punches, a hard hitting hw will crush him in devastating fashion. He will find out what its like to break a jaw and rib from one punch. This is almost as bad as Dana exploiting James toney.

poor guy, kimbo’s just too old to be giving any combat sport a try. he’ll get lit up by an average hw imo, and he will never belong in the same ring as any of the upper echelon pugilists. hopefully his name will allow him to make some decent bank fighting lower to mid level guys. eventually, if he can somehow put together a nice winning streak, some promoter will push him too soon into the ring w/ someone kimbo has no business being in the ring w/ imo
